RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - BosCard - 11-06-2021

Emma-Nnopu has become a very good perimeter defender.  Long active arms

Bosgana really pushes the ball in transition.  Always looking to attack.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - martyup - 11-06-2021

I like that we have few turnovers.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - BosCard - 11-06-2021

Bosgana playing PG now.  She is definitely a scorer.   Love how aggressive she is driving to the basket.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - TheWildJacko - 11-06-2021

Nice double double so far for Iriafen: 11 points, 11 rebounds as well as 2 assists, a block and a steal.

ETA a silly foul with 10 seconds left, but only her second of the game.

Also, 0 (Zero) fouls on Brink.

Pretty nice stats overall. 11 team fouls, only 2 players (Iriafen and Emma-Nnopu with 2 PFs, 22 assists vs. 8 TOs (and only 1 player, Wilson, with 2 TOs).

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - 81alum - 11-06-2021

Well, I will do a proper write-up once some official stats get posted, but here are my initial impressions:

1) Today, Anna Wilson looked like a genuine, terrific point guard, distributing well, making deft passes for assists, and hitting treys of her own from outside.  In the second half she got a bit sloppy a couple of times.  Also, feeding the ball inside is a lot easier against Clarke than it will be against teams with our athleticism and length, so we won't know how it is working out until after Texas.  But so far, so good.

2) At one point we had 3 freshmen, sophomore Emma-Nnopu, and Jerome on the floor together.  And those five expanded our lead.  We are a very, very deep team.  That kind of depth may show up on defense since we can keep fresh, energetic players on the floor at all times.  Defense will be one of our strengths.

3) I did not see Belibi take a jump shot in this game as I did in open practice.  She didn't need too--clearly it was easy for us to use our height to get the ball inside to our bigs.

4) I wonder about Harriel.  She warmed up today and for the open practice but did not play in either.

5) I watched Brook Demetre more today.  Her mid range to three point range jump shot is sweet--rarely hits anything but net, and makes that pinpoint accurate swooshing sound.  On defense I think she held her own quite well, but against a shorter, inferior team.  Will be interesting to see how she holds up against the likes of Texas.

6) Brink was more under control today, I do not think she fouled.  She seemed to be making a conscious effort to hold her arms straight up.

7) Bosgana can play.  She played point for a while, and has a tendency when doing so to always take the shot herself.  She drives well and shoots treys well, and moves quite well for 6'2".  I think we will see more of her this year.

8) Jump was back on track after a less-than-awesome open practice.  She hit three treys in a row--her trademark is to hit them in spurts.

9) Iriafan was superb with her free throws.  Her moves around the basket did not always go in, but she provoked several fouls and converted her free throws.  That could get her some playing time.

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - jonnyss - 11-06-2021

we were also at the game. i agree with your observations.

the player who surprised me on the upside was bosgana. she plays very good, aggressive defense. she is quick, alert, high energy. she does indeed have an outside shot. she reminds me  a bit of the hulls - only taller (like lexie, elena likes to drive and play tight d). and she must be a quick learner as she seemed to know where to be on defense and even running the offense. when she was at the point, she was not to my eyes a ball hog. my guess from a single exhibition game is that, if she had played at an american college, she would be ranked around # 20.

as others noted about the scrimmage (which i missed): agnes emma-nnopu is much improved.

kiki iriafen? wow! as advertised: strong, agile. and when's the last time a post player in her first game at stanford hit all (i think) of her many free throws? and can she ever rebound!

all 3 of the freshmen played like upper classmen. jordan hamilton as well. no one is lost, they know the offense, they know the defense (well, occasional lapses with 2 defenders on one clarke player and none on another; but only a few).

Is Demetre quick enuf to guard the perimeter?

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - joemontes - 11-06-2021

Just curious.  Has the Stanford WBB team ever played an exhibition against a lower ranked local boys HS team? Or is that even allowed?

I kinda thought it might be much more beneficial, compared to severely outmatched small college WBB teams like Clarke or Menlo.

Back in the late 1990s, I remember watching the WNBA Portland Fire play a couple of friendly games, 1st vs a local Portland boys HS team and 2nd vs a ragtag team of former Division II/NAIA college men's players.  They beat the boys HS team by 10 pts, but were routed by the ragtag team of former Division II/NAIA college men's players by 30+ points.

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - CompSci87 - 11-06-2021

I doubt they'd do a public game like that. They do use male practice players, unless covid or having such a large roster this year has interrupted that.

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - joemontes - 11-06-2021

Looking at the final stats, a few things stand out:

(1)  BRINK played for 15 minutes, ends up with 10 pts, 4 rebs, 2 assists, 1 steal and, more importantly, NO FOUL and NO TURNOVER - YES!
(2)  Freshman PF IRIAFEN played for 18 minutes, ends up with a DOUBLE-DOUBLE 11 PTS and 11 REBS, along with 3 assists, 1 block and 1 steal
(3)  Freshman SG BOSGANA played for 17 minutes, ends up with 11 pts (2/4 from 3pts), 3 rebs, 2 assists, 2 steals
(4)  Grad transfer PF HAMILTON played for 14 minutes, only had 2 pts and 1 assists, but 4 BLOCKS!

Honestly I don’t see any upside in that kind of game. Others may see it differently but I don’t think this is like Billie Jean vs Riggs.

I think we need to see more of Demetre with regards to her perimeter defense.  When she was on the floor in the second half, she was mostly playing the 4.

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - WBB fan - 11-06-2021

Only an exhibition game, but there was so much that was encouraging for a great season. As others have said, both Fran and Agnes are hugely improved from last year -- we saw that in the open practice, but it there is was again today. Fran just looks so more assured. Iriafen, wow, she's going to be fantastic, and Bosgana -- so confident for someone so young.

Everyone suited up got to play significant minutes, and everyone made serious contributions. It almost didn't seem to matter who was on the court. Interesting stat no one has noted yet -- everyone scored except Lexie. And everyone who did score had at least one field goal.

I'm excited for this season. It's going to be brutal, though, though given the strength of the pre-conference schedule and the the Pac-12 meatgrinder. I just hope we can keep everyone healthy. The depth can help that, meaning that Tara can let people rest in games as needed.

So . . . , onward!

I would rather we play a tough early schedule and test this team rather than breeze through a bunch of cupcakes with 30+ point wins.  I wouldn't go so far as to wish we suffer a loss or two, but I hope we get challenged and have to dig deep to pull out victories.

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - chimera - 11-06-2021

I don't think I can fund anything to complain about in this one.  OK, Lexie missed her shots,  that's it, but we know what she can do so it doesn't matter much if at all.  Clarke was way overmatched but they played hard, and seem like a pretty well coached group.  Aside from the Obvious (Belibi, Jones, Brink, Jump, Hulls doing their thing), highlights to me were Bosgana, Iriafen, Emma-Nnopu looking good and Hamilton looking much more comfortable and capable .

Bosgana has work to do but she sure looks like she could very good.  She can do too much herself, which can end in wild shots, but she moves well for her height, long arms, good hands, good court awareness, aggressive and vocal, able to drive and shoot from three.  Lots to like.  Her defense was good against smaller and presumably quicker players.  Iriafen rebounds really well and seems to have all the tools and the athleticism to be a fantastic post.  Her mid-range shot is pretty too.  She hit her FTs well.  Emma-Nnopu got the call early and looks a lot improved.  Her defense was great, intensity great, and her offense is coming along well.  We are so deep but she could earn some playing time just by being a defensive stopper.

I don't think we know for sure about pg play overall but today it looked just fine from Wilson and Hamilton with Lacie helping out some and Bosgana at the end looking comfortable, though her handle does need to improve if she has to be a key ball handler.

Demetre does have a lovely shot, and is very efficient out there.  I think for her the issue is where does she get time now?  Hard to break into the rotation at the 4 or even the three with the depth of the team at those spots.

Overall it was great to be back in Maples.  I'm sure the team appreciated having fans again.  They played a fairly crisp and intense game, every last one of them.

Still hoping to see Harriel soon.  No idea why she was held out of the open practice and now this game.

I suspect that's the answer, for now anyway.

Yes, how much can you conclude from this?  How much did the team learn about playing against top teams?  There's nothing wrong with scheduling an extreme mismatch I suppose to get everyone excited about the season.

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - joemontes - 11-06-2021

So for those who were able to watch this exhibition game, how does the DEPTH CHART at each position look like?

Example:
*******
SF:   JONES / Lacie HULL / Lexie HULL / DEMETRE
PF:   BELIBI / IRIAFEN / JONES / DEMETRE
CC:  BRINK / PRECHTEL / JEROME
SG:  Lexie HULL / JUMP / Lacie HULL / EMMA-NNOPU / BOSGANA
PG:  WILSON / HAMILTON / VAN GYTENBEEK / BROWN / HARRIEL

Despite the above chart, I do anticipate BRINK/PRECHTEL or BELIBI/IRIAFEN on the court at the same time

RE: WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - jonnyss - 11-06-2021

oh, another fun observation from attending the game: brooke demetre is a talker! when she's at the top of the key, she's barking instructions (or observations - i couldn't parse exactly what she was saying) every 5 to 10 seconds. not sure i've ever seen a stanford women's bball player communicate so much or so loud before. did anyone else notice that?

Lacie actually was the first point guard off the bench today. Of course that's with Van Gytenbeek out and Hamilton still learning the system.

Everyone has positional flexibility, so it's tough to make a depth chart by position.
