I watched the MSU/Purdue contest.  Walker was often getting stymied at the line, but still managed to rack up 146 yards on 23 carries. The MSU passing attack, however, could not make up the difference.  On the other side of the ball, the MSU defense seemed wholly incapable of getting off the field.  Purdue only punted twice in 12 possessions (with two ending in a fumble and at expiration of time in the first half).  The other eight possessions ended in 4 TDs and 4 FGs.  Purdue's O'Connell was 40 of 54 for 536 yards passing.  MSU seemed like a totally different team from the one we saw vs. Michigan.  Purdue won the battle in the trenches and is now in a 4-way tie for first in the B1G west.

Anybody think we have a chance against them?  I don't, especially after Shaw said McKee probably won't play.

Without McKee in the line-up, we will not win another game this season.  If McKee were to play, we would have a chance on a good day to fell the Beavers (and the Bears, as well, for that matter).  ND is out of reach this year.

Without McKee in the line-up, we will not win another game this season.  If McKee were to play, we would have a chance on a good day to fell the Beavers (and the Bears, as well, for that matter).  ND is out of reach this year.

I agree with that sentiment. Here's another question. If McKee can't play against OSU and Kal, but somehow is able to against the Domers would you put him in? I'm not sure it's worth it. No sense in taking the chance of getting him banged up. Make sure he is healthy for next year.

I agree with that sentiment. Here's another question. If McKee can't play against OSU and Kal, but somehow is able to against the Domers would you put him in? I'm not sure it's worth it. No sense in taking the chance of getting him banged up. Make sure he is healthy for next year.

That's a good question.  Experience in a big game is worth a lot, and McKee needs experience.  But severe injury can be career-ending, and without an effective O-line to protect the QB, the risk is high (as we saw vs. UW).  It might be prudent to write off the game and let McKee fully heal, then go to work retooling the O-line so that he has a chance to flourish next year.  I'm just stuck at the challenge of retooling the O-line.  Not sure how you do that with the current roster and the current coaching staff.

but what if McKee can't play vs OSU and C.a.l. but he can and wants to play vs ND, should Shaw not let him play in a "meaningless game"?  

If McKee is healthy enough and wanted to play vs ND, and Shaw did not play him, would that decision be any better received here than a player skipping a "meaningless bowl game"?

If McKee is healthy enough and wanted to play vs ND, and Shaw did not play him, would that decision be any better received here than a player skipping a "meaningless bowl game"?

Clearly, the decision would have to be mutual.  If McKee desperately wants to play and is cleared to play, then Shaw should let him.  However, if they both agree that it's better for his future to skip the ND game and focus on 2022, then nobody should be complaining.  All that said, regardless of what the decision is, somebody has to take the snaps in the ND game.  If it isn't McKee, then the same could be said about West or Sanders or Patu.  Aren't they also being exposed to serious injury behind the current O-line?

I think the OL itself needs to answer that question. The guys out there aren't chopped liver. It isn't a bunch of 240 pound three star guys who can't play a lick. This line shouldn't be playing as poorly as it is. One may blame S&C, or the OL coach, and they may in fact be a problem. It may be that the players have to go to Shaw and say "Coach, we can't execute the plan our OL coach wants us to. Let us try X instead". These guys aren't dummies, they have ideas. In any case, they need to look inward and ask "Why do we suck and what can I do about it"? They may not be able to be great, but they absolutely can play better than they have the last three games. At this point, it is going to have to come from within. There is no magic coaching trick that will "fix" the situation.

Good thought.  But if the change could come from within the OL, then my question is: why would it only be coming now?  They have played poorly most of the season, so they have had a lot of time to show self-ownership of the issue and be masters of their own destiny.  Seems late with only 3 games to play.  But, yes, on the face of things, the players should have the chops to play much, much better.

It may be that the message from the coaches has been something like "You are close. You just need to play a bit better and it will happen for us". That seems to be the message out there for public consumption anyway. As was pointed out on this board recently, the "numbers" say they were improving. Possibly it takes a total meltdown to make the players realize it isn't working and "somebody has to do something". I do absolutely agree it is late in the season for that to happen. Not counting on it. Hope it happens.

If McKee is cleared vs ND, of course he's going to want to play, refusing to play him would be disastrous, imo. Any athlete worth his salt would agree.
