Despite the sloppiness (TOs) and fouling, this is an OK effort for a first official game for Stanford,, as it allows Tara to experiment with her combinations on the court.

I wonder if Jerome is thinking of coaching. While I think highly of her, she had to know she wasn't going to get much playing time this year. But, I guess maybe she just enjoys the game, and is primarily helping the new players. When she was on the court, I saw her take one of the new ladies aside and seemingly give advice about what to do in that particular game situation.

Just home from the game. Here are my first impressions:

1) Tara will be concerned about 21 turnovers. If we do that against Texas we will lose--and Texas is better equipped than Morgan State to force turnovers. Wilson with 1 assist and 3 turnovers, Jones and Lexie with three turnovers each as well. Many of them were "trying to do too much" sorts of turnovers--trying to zip the ball in for a spectacular play. If Morgan State got deflections imagine what Texas will do. I bet this is a priority focus the next couple of days.

2) The defense seemed excellent for long stretches, but the constant rotation sometimes discombobulated the offense. I think taking the edge off the offense to give Tara a chance to play different combinations was probably to be expected.

3) Lexie emphatically got her shot back. No slump for Lexie.

4) Jump looked terrific.

5) After that interesting squad scrimmage where Belibi showed us a jumpshot, I have not seen it again. She was 5/6 today but all from point blank range. She also needs to iron out her free throw shooting.

6) I become more and more impressed with Iriafan the more I see her. She hits her free throws too, which is a major plus for a freshman post.

7) Demetre is a wonderful pure shooter, a pleasure to watch. I wonder how her defense and awareness are coming along. I could see her getting a lot of minutes this year too.

8) Most astonishing stat of the game was assists for Morgan State. They had 0 until almost then end, then got 1. That is the measure of our defense.

That pales, though, compared to the time Tennessee had only 1 assist (IIRC) in losing to us in one of the last games Pat Summit coached here.

Agree about Texas. The press and defense Stanford saw tonight is no comparison to Texas, much quicker and more physical

Demetre and Iriafen are the real deal. Fun to see them get lots of minutes in the 4th. We'll see if they can break the rotation. I wonder who loses out on playtime as those two come along?

Sloppy game passing and also hanging onto the ball. But it was a first game, and that is kinda what often happens. I hope Wilson is ok after banging her back/hip while taking a charge. Defense was generally good. There was a bit too much gambling on steals from our guards at times, leaving them out of position and beaten to the rim. It was a weird game, in that I don't think we played that well, mostly due to the turnovers, too many missed layups, and too much fouling on defense, but we just wrecked a team that is undersized but is favored to win their conference I believe. I also thought our press break needs work. It was too slow and indecisive too much. But first game, and good practice for Texas so ok.

Returners all looked fine, not all in mid-season form, but nothing concerning. I don't want to say point guard is an issue because it was a team-wide TO fest but we do need to settle down with the ballhandling.

I was impressed with Demetre's smooth shot. She is not flashy but she is very effective. Agree that Iriafen is going to be a beast inside. Like all frosh, she has things to improve but everything is there for her to be a great post. Bosgana can be a bit wild but she is confident and sees the game well. Tara called her a playmaker in a story somewhere and I can see why. I would love to see what Harriel can do but seems she is coming back from an injury of some sort and they are taking it slowly. Our freshman look very, very promising. It may be hard to get them on court given who we have returning though.

As for getting the freshmen on the court, Tara did say she expected a rotation of 10. Even on a deep team like last year the rotation was usually 8 in key games. The first 8 are pretty clear. So who will the 10 be?

1) Jones
2) Brink
3) Lexie
4) Wilson
5) Jump
6) Belibi
7) Prechtel
8) Lacie
Then which 2 of these?
Iriafan, Demetre, Van Gytenbeek, Hamilton, Bosgana, Emma-Nnopu

I presume that Jerome, Harriel, and Brown are out due to injury or competition.

Wilson is going to need help at point guard, so either Van Gytenbeek or Hamilton will have to be in the rotation. That would leave room for only one more of those outstanding players, unless someone off of last year's rotation loses out. Will Iriafan, for example, supplant Belibi or Prechtel? Will Bosgana or Demetre supplant Lacie?

I think the Texas game is going to answer some of our questions.

The GoStanford.com archives don't give the coaches' names, so I had to check Wikipedia. Summitt retired in 2012.
At Stanford in 2011 (Stanford 97-80), Tennessee had 11 assists. (Pat Summit's last season)
At Stanford in 2009 (Stanford 67-52), Tennessee had 4 assists.
At Stanford in 2007 (Stanford 73-62 OT), Tennessee had 13 assists.
GoStanford.com doesn't provide any game box scores older than that. (Boo!)

Definitely Hamilton will be part of the rotation. I think she is the best ball handler on the team. Very good defender. Doesn’t score much but she doesn’t have to with the other players on the team.

For much of the game Morgan State was sitting at only 3 made baskets, with most of their points on free throws. They hit a few baskets late and finished with exactly half their 36 points on free throws.
