RE: MBB: Stanford vs Tarleton State - Phogge - 11-09-2021

Banistre Tarleton was a sadistic Red Coat officer in the British Army during the Revolution. A character in the film The Patriot was based on him. Gibson runs him through but in real life he survived the war. Played by Jason Isaacs of Black Hawk Down fame. Don't know if he had anything to do with the school.

Freedom for Scotland!

I asked if Ingram could shoot the 3. I doubt it's a big feature of his game but he did hit a corner 3 as the game was ending.
The French guy looks pretty good, actually. He's quite slender but rebounds aggressively and is more fluid than I expected.
I don't think we set a screen for Jones once. Maybe five were set for him last year. He can't shoot the 3 off the dribble but I'd venture he would make 45% if there some good screens. I haven't understood it for two years and it looks like more of the same.
Gimme more Silva. Once he got used to the pressure he was pretty slick. McConnell actually looked overwhelmed at times on offense.

Happy for the win, but there were plenty of times during the game that this looked the Stanford of the previous five years. At least the offense improved from the first half to the second: 36% to 50% FG, 10% to 46% 3-pointers, 5-7 to 11-15 FT. And Harrison Ingram was awesome. But 12 assists and 14 turnovers is stomach-churning.

We'll see how the team performs at Santa Clara on Friday.

Offense improved in the second half based on the personnel, mostly getting O'Connell, Murrell and Kisunas off the floor and giving a lot of minutes to Silva, Ingram, Delaire and Raynaud. As others have said, the true freshmen were really, really good, esp Ingram but Silva was dynamic and created shots for others in a way that O'Connell can't and Raynaud moved well and is promising as a young big. Admittedly it was only one game, but my hot take on the flip side: Murrell should barely see the floor, Keefe should never see the floor, O'Connell should be backing up Silva, and Kisunas is fine coming off the bench as a banger but will hopefully be backing up Raynaud soon. Haase seems to love "his guys" to a fault, meaning the floor burn types with limited talent (which describes him back at Cal/Kansas plus a lot of last night's starters), but I'm encouraged he kept with the young crew in the second half and as a season ticket holder hope that continues. In the first half I was admittedly already thinking it was going to be a lot of painful nights at Maples, but second half line-up gave me a lot of hope.

RE: MBB: Stanford 62 vs Tarleton State 50 - BobK - 11-10-2021

I thought O’Connell made some very good passes for open threes and a couple in the paint. The shots were missed which isn’t on O’Connell. That said Silva was very good

RE: MBB: Stanford 62 vs Tarleton State 50 - winflop - 11-10-2021

For the first 30 mins it was "meet the new team, same as the old team." Turnovers. Missed 3s.

The last 10 mins gave me some optimism, but considering the opponent I'm not changing my thoughts that this is a bottom-half team. Any team that could shoot even decently from outside would have had a 15+ point lead at halftime.

Interesting.  I have opposite takes on Kisunas (12 and 5 is damn good) and Delaire (bailed out by refs; still leads with his off arm too much); and I'm not ready to designate Silva as the starter over MOC.  It's one game, and their games were comparable last night.  Let's see how things play out, including against better competition.  I do agree that Maxime has a higher ceiling than Kisunas, so there is greater upside there.  But in terms of realizing it . . . again, we'll see.

RE: MBB: Stanford 62 vs Tarleton State 50 - bl82 - 11-10-2021

And for the record, I'll go long Murrell. While his shot wasn't going in (made the first one, then missed the last six), he was an extremely active presence on defense and seems a lot more fluid and purposeful than I remember from last year. The fact that he was firing up threes and missing does not bother me. He obviously has the green light from the coaches and has no doubt earned that as a result of his play in practices. We already know he can jump out of the gym. If he can be a solid three-point shooter, great rebounder, disruptive defender and capable inside-outside player, I think his upside may have a little Andrei Kirilenko in it -- and that's something I'd love to see.

Besides liking the freshmen's play, I was surprised by Delaire's ball handling and how effective Kisunas was under the rim. He used to blow layups or get the ball stripped down low. I don't recall that happening last night. He made a few dunks and hit his layups. That's a good start for him.

You and Teejers are much higher on Kisunas than I am, obviously. Blowing layups and getting the ball stripped (or blocked...a lot) is a function of his limited athleticism and skills. Tarleton State is tiny: tallest kid who played was 6'6" and not bulky either. Kisunas *should* have feasted on that team, and he was...just ok despite the stat line looking decent. Against a better, taller team I'm afraid he's going to be the same kid we've seen. I think he's fine in spot minutes coming off the bench, but imo he's not a starter on a good Pac-12 team and I didn't see anything last night to make me think otherwise. But one game, so let's hope...

He was also playing against opponents who were 3-4 inches shorter and 50 lbs lighter. Let's see how he does against someone his own size.

That is my concern for Reynaud (the height mismatch part).  Still, Reynaud at least looked more fluid.

It looks to me like Kisunas got in better shape and "played lighter," a little niftier.  But I don't disagree with basic take that K's athleticism is limited.  Maxime's is, too . . . he's just taller.  But Maxime is definitely a better/more skilled player on the perimeter (and perhaps in paint, though we didn't see that last night).  My bottom line: against good (let alone great) teams, it's a man's game, even at the college level (recall Terry getting bullied last 1/3 of his frosh season, and he was a better frosh than any of these guys).  Thus, don't be surprised to see the frosh, with exception of Ingram who is solidly built and based right now, get bullied a fair amount by good teams this season.

Again, I'll be happy if/when the frosh emerge as key, regular contributors.  And I do expect it to happen at some point this season.  We shall see.

Jones is the guy I'd like to see get off more on offensive end.

Am I the only one who believed Harrison Ingram would immediately be Stanford's best player, and Silva would be if not #2, then definitely #3 best, possibly behind Delaire?

My belief is Ingram and Silva are the types of players who have the talent and drive to win that can lift the program, but only if Hasse gives the team to them.

RE: MBB: Stanford 62 vs Tarleton State 50 - BobK - 11-10-2021

As other posters know Silva played a bit for Prolific Prep in 2020. He did t do well. So thinking he would be the second best player was a wild guess.
I’m very pleased with his game yesterday and very relived

I'm also extremely high on these two, as well as the frenchman. MR may have the most upside of the three of them. As for handing over the keys to Silva and Ingram, Ingram is already a starter. And, my guess is that Silva will become a starter at some point this season.

RE: MBB: Stanford 62 vs Tarleton State 50 - PVTree - 11-29-2021

Gonzaga leading Tarleton by 2 points with less than 6 minutes to go.

***********

Gonzaga ends up winning by 9, 64-55. [We beat them by 12 (: ]
