Re dirt clods and cars, my cousin tossed a cherry bomb out his bedroom window once.....right thru an open window on the passing 55 Sacramento. Rumor has it the driver stopped the bus and got out and looked around for the culprits. Can't confirm that since we were all hiding out of sight below the window sill. 60 years later and he's still afraid we're gonna squeal on him to his 96 yr old mom.

We got one Seals game a week (Saturday with two cameras and Don Klein at the mic) until the first UHF station came on air. Think we got a couple of weekly bight games, one at Seals and one from Oakland until the Oaks moved after the '55 season to Vancouver. Klein did Stanford football, Bud Foster did the Oaks radio, Roy Storey the Channel 32 (UHF with a special rabbit ears coil antenna) games and Bob Fouts doing the Niners from Kezar. There was one game of the week on NBC with Lindsey Nelson calling and Red Grange doing color. There were a couple of other games on Dumont but not everybody saw them. CBS handled the NFL GOTW. Rozelle negotiated the contract that guaranteed that every home market in the NFL viewed their home team on CBS on the road. Local games were blacked out. NBC did a deal with the AFL.
Big Game was THE sports event in the Bay Area. The Saturday morning papers had many pages devoted to the game.
Kids actually played outside. We made up our own games, played football in the streets and went to Saturday matinees mostly to raise hell early and then to meet girls a bit later in adolescence. We didn't have the experience of growing up in the country shooting squirrels and swimming in ponds but we did know how to string cherry bombs together and how to lead a moving car with a dirt clod.
Yeah, I remember Fireman Frank as well. I think that is why I liked those tv shows - they didn’t talk down to kids.

George Lamont was as entertaining (and sly) as anything on TV in that era. Rhode Island Red, Scat the Cat and Carl the Carrot made kids laugh and adults quietly chuckle at the ribald subtleties the kids didn't "get". Closest thing on the air to the old Soupy Sales show (originating in NYC). Right there with You Bet Your Life (Groucho Marx).

It looks like interest in attending Big Game had already started to wane in the early 2000s. But attendance has been at or near 50k sellout at every home Big Game since the new stadium was built, even in the putrid 2019 season. This year's won-loss record will be equally or more putrid than 2019, but Big Game attendance will be worse (I'm talking butts in the seats). We'll see if this is a one-off occurrence or a pattern. Of course, I'm hoping for the former.

Too old for Captain Kangaroo. I did watch Tennessee Tuxedo, another show with some subtle stuff for adults.
Louise Bliss was the voice of Crusader Rabbit. She also hosted the Birthday Show on KRON. Captain Fortune was on KPIX, a studio show with 16mm remote features starring Pete Abenheim and the immense Dick Camp usually sword fighting in Golden Gate Park. Bobbbbbbb K was the occasional victim who was covered in studio blood.

Then we lost to ASU, UCLA and Washington before squeaking out a win over #19 Arizona. Which was followed by losses to OSU, Oregon, USC and Cal.
But back to the topic at hand. Per wikipedia, home attendance was:
62,778 vs #2 Oklahoma (Stanford 0-0 going into the game)
68,201 vs SJSU (0-2)
55,804 vs UCLA (0-4)
40,208 vs Arizona (0-6)
31,420 vs Oregon (1-8)
84,804!!!!! vs Cal (1-9)
Of course, this was the Big Game immediately following The Play. GaryT was featured prominently in the halftime show, so that must also have been a factor in the impressive rebound in attendance.
And I'm sure that Stanford was the best 1-10 team in college football that year.

Hmm, I don't remember Stanford ever being routed by Oklahoma. Maybe before my time? In 1980, we defeated OU rather handily and I attended the game in Norman in 1984 where we lost by 12. The Sun Bowl with Toby Gerhart and Tavita-instead-of-Andrew was a close loss. Maybe in the 1970s?

1978 first game of season. Dils threw a Hail Mary on the last play. Knocked down. A number of passes to FB Phil Francis, one of the great unsung Stanfords.
1983 Steve Cottrell started and failed. Wiggin inserted Paye who threw for a lot of yards. Elvis Peacock of UO ran for a bunch.
1980 Elway in the rain. Big day for Oklahoma fumbles and big day for Andre Tyler. Nelson hurt, Dot and VDub outstanding.
And yes, Captain Fortune had a goatee.

I agree with everyone that attendance will not be great - maybe 50% of capacity - but for the record, it's not hard to sell your tickets if needed. We are going out of town this weekend and can't attend. I listed my three Section 116 tickets (15 yard-line, shady side) for $60/each on Stubhub (plus fees), and they were gone within 15 mins.
I feel kind of badly about this next part, but after failing to monetize fully my own tickets, I then felt compelled to list the two free tell-a-friend tickets that Stanford gave all season ticket members. Mine were in Section 120, in the corner. Those two sold within a couple hours at $45/each. This was all on Tuesday night. When I looked tonight, prices were even higher, although I suspect they might drop by tomorrow or Sat.
I suffered through our home losses vs. UCLA, UW, and Utah. I'm not in the camp that claim they had a bad time. I enjoy the games, win or lose, but obviously more when we win. In fact, I even made my 13 year-old son and 78 year-old dad sit through the Utah game until the bitter end! And I'm not even an alumnus, I'm exactly the type of lifelong Bay Area fan that they're dying to have. If, just hypothetically, Stanford were unhappy with me for offloading the free tix for money, they could go pound sand. The email did not say we shouldn't. Sorry, not sorry.
On another note, I don't really understand why prices are relatively sticky when available inventory is so plentiful. Maybe Stanford holds back some inventory to optimize pricing, utilizing the Stubhub platform?
