Stanford 8th at the mid-way point, Hicks still among the leaders. There's going to have to be some big movement if Stanford wants to get into the Top 5 here.

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th runners are together in the high 80s.
Hicks leads the race at 5K
Wasn't this announcer a host of the TV show Wipeout? Is this John Anderson?
Robinson is holding his own in the top 20.
RE: Cross Country -
Lorcan - 11-20-2021
At 8KM, Stanford has inched up into 7th, about 53 points out of 3rd at this juncture. Someone should try and pull a Christina Aragon and make up 30 places in the last kilometer.
RE: Cross Country -

Mantz's form is ugly.
Hicks finishes 4th. Robinson 14th.
RE: Cross Country -
Lorcan - 11-20-2021
Ugly, but effective as he's the individual champion on the men's side. The Northern Arizona Dynasty continues, and Stanford ends up in 5th. No podium today, sadly but some great runs.

Team places 5th?

Is that considered a good result for our team? Better/worse than expected?

Stanford’s top 4 all redshirt freshmen
Coming in 2 of top 5 in the nation
Thrilled on the Women in 6th and the Men right now at 5th.

Yeah, similar to the UW runner in the womens' race.
BYU takes both individual Championships.

I'd say that 5th is considered a good result for the men, especially considering how young the team is. The team was ranked 7th coming in, so we exceeded the ranking/expectation which is good. I think that there was an outside chance of a podium -- but I'm not disappointed in finishing 5th -- especially when you have another strong runner who didn't even run today due to injury.

FarmTeam - 11-20-2021
I'd say a good result but still mildly disappointing to finish 5th. Great, great runs by Hicks, Robinson and Meika B-R (5th guy but not a scorer for us when we're hitting on all cylinder). Hart ran pretty well. Sprout really underperformed against expectations. Sprout is one of the "Big 3" and was well back of Robinson and finished with Hart and Meika. He was off at Regional too. I don't have any inside knowledge but assume that he has been injured or sick. Missing Boyden today didn't help either.

Maybe we need to train at altitude.

I wonder if someone could develop an apparatus that simulates training at altitude. Perhaps a mask that would thin oxygen level of the intake air?

Both Hicks and Sprout have altitude tents in their dorm rooms set up over their beds. Not joking.

Fascinating. Not surprised. Do you know where the women stand on this? Also, is it possible to be competitive at an elite level (i.e., top 5-10 in the NCAAs) without them?

No idea about the women, but I seriously doubt they have altitude tents. And the video that Hicks posted that showed his and Sprout's altitude tents also showed that teammate and superstar Ky Robinson didn't have one.
To your other question, the answer is "of course." Most of the top college runners in the country are not training at altitude nor do they have altitude tents. To the latter, there's quite a bit of controversy in the running world whether altitude tents actually work. Altitude tents aren't actually altitude of course and apparently the physiological impact is not necessarily identical. Also, the best pro group in the country -- the Bowerman Track Club -- is based in Portland not at altitude. They go up to altitude for training stints on occasion, but certainly don't train there nor use altitude tents year-round. Finally, not all elite runners are "altitude responders" as some have experimented with training at altitude and fared poorly and some have really thrived. So altitude is certainly not a requirement at any level. I can think of top US pros (Ben True) who are famously old school and wouldn't dream of using this kind of tech nor live at altitude.

Farm Team great to have you posting here
Both teams trained at altitude during period of new class on campus. Almost always they start the XC training at Tahoe or Mamouth
