RE: New Coach. CANDIDATES? - Maple Leaf - 11-21-2021

A few weeks back The Athletic had an article by Mandel (IIRC) about the PAC 12 and open head coaching positions.  He mentioned that most of the head coaching positions would be filled by coaches who are currently coaching in either the PAC 12 or Mountain West due to the unique nature of coaching college football West of the Rockies.  John Ralston and Harbaugh were coaching in the West before coming to Stanford and both had ties to the Bay Area.  Walsh had ties to the Bay Area and was coaching at the time with the Chargers.  Denny Green even though he was from the Mid West (played at Iowa) worked under Walsh-1 as an assistant, so there is a pattern to successful head coaches at Stanford, but being from the West Coast and being a Stanford Alum is not a guarantee of success (Wiggen).

When it comes to hiring a new head coach and even coordinators who would be a good fit? And who would want to take such a position at Stanford at this time?  Who want to work for Muir? Deal with admissions, early LOI signing, NIL, free agency (transfer portal), non supportive administration and less than excited fan base.  The best candidates may opt to wait for a better opportunity than what Stanford has to offer at this time.

RE: New Coach. CANDIDATES? - Phogge - 11-21-2021

How about Musgrave? Designed an offense that put up 600 plus yards, albeit against the worst defense in D1. Actually pro style, attractive to kids who are thinking NFL. However he would need to recruit backs unlike what Stanford uses now, small guys who can’t move the pile. Utah has them, UCLA has one, Cal has three, Oregon State wins with a couple. He knows the West Coast, played under Walsh.

How about a young guy to run the D? Somebody like the guy who Jonathan Smith picked when he fired the DC mid-season. Somebody with passion without hubris.

If Shaw stays Stanford is doomed to losing seasons, Big Game slaughters and “crowds” of 8,000.

RE: New Coach. CANDIDATES? - newguy - 11-21-2021

i don't know how many of you follow soccer, but this season reminds me of the USMNT in 2017, when we failed to qualify for the World Cup.
after we lost to Trinidad and Tobago, our coach, Bruce Arena, was forced to resign.  but that wasn't enough.
the president of U.S. Soccer, Sunil Gulati, decided not to run for re-election.  had he run, he probably would have lost.
our athletic department needs new leadership.  and Bernard M. Muir needs to go.

Agreed to pay Shaw a ridiculous salary. Stanford shouldn't pay anyone that kind of money, especially the football coach.
Cut 11 sports, then had to humiliate himself and the AD and backtrack.
Apparently serves at the pleasure of the football coach and not vice versa.

You forgot our permanently bad basketball team and the embarrassing admissions scandal (which would have been the really easy excuse to fire him).

OK, I could be down with that. Specifically who replaces each one and what does that person bring (other than not already being on staff) that will "fix" our deficiencies? Addition by subtraction can work, but probably not at this scale. You will need to replace these guys.

I'm honestly surprised Muir survived the admissions scandal - oversight and compliance should be core responsibilities for his office.  And yeah, I don't donate as much to Stanford these days because clearly if there's enough money to pay the football coach what he's getting, they don't need more of mine.  Would rather give to K-12 public education and other more-in-need schools where our family has an affiliation.

If Shaw wants to be the Tara Vanderveer of Stanford Football - a goal he has stated in the past - he has to show Tara's ability to reinvent one's system and adapt successfully.  Maybe in football it's hard to do that without a losing season or two (or three...).  But then again, if he's lost the fire (and I am VERY worried about what we saw in that presser...), we probably need to plan the winningest-coach-ever sendoff party and then set a course for the future.

Good points. During the Buddy/Walt Wandering In The Wilderness Years, I had my doubts about Hennessy's support for football (knew that Leland was a checked-out lame duck). That is, until Hennessy hired Bowlsby who hired Harbaugh. I dunno what to think about MTL but for some reason I believe the guy has enough street-smarts to be listening to the right people, right now, about the acrid aroma emitting from the Athletic Department's PR optics and specifically FB and to a maybe lesser extent  MBB. I could be dead wrong, of course, and this president could be head-first in the sand up to his waist. Still, we need a sea change. Now. #MuirAndShawMustGo

RE: New Coach. CANDIDATES? - ADPinWDC - 11-21-2021

Replace BOTH OffCo and DefCo.  Shaw gets two years, then walks into the sunset.

FIXES:
OFFCo: Here is my nominee; He makes less than $1M at a state school, UVA as OffCo. Robert Anae.
Former lineman at BYU when they won the National Championship with Ty Detmer in 1984.
In 2019, UVA went to the ACC Champ game against Clemson. UVA is an academic school, in VA it is as tough to get into as Cal in Calif.
https://virginiasports.com/coach/robert-anae/

Our Defense is TERRIBLE; worst in Pac-12 by a mile. It was in 2019 also, at 4-8.
DefCo: Bring back Derek Mason (aka, the "Duck Whisperer" with the 3-4 D), now the DefCo at Auburn.
That's a tough sell. But, Mason might take it if he saw it as a ramp to Head Coach at Stanford. Pay him.
He failed as HC at Vandy; but that's a terrible spot, SEC doormat every year; no recruiting platform.
I doubt Mason thinks he could be head coach at Auburn.
With Mason at Stanford (2010-2013), we went 12-1 (Orange Bowl), 11-2 (Fiesta), 12-2 (Rose), 11-3 (Rose).
BCS Bowl every year, with superior defense, and 44W-8L over four seasons.

Wildcard: Rocky Long (now at Univ New Mexico, age 71),
who had a great record tormenting us with the 3-3-5 Defense at SDState (2009-2019).
Long could be a 2-year hire to right the ship. NEW THINKING.

Maybe I'm reading too much into your comments but you make it sound as if there aren't dozens of hungry up-and-comers who would inject much needed innovation and recruiting juice. I don't think replacing the entire staff is prudent, and I also don't know to what extent Stanford is willing to spend money on this, but here are some names with interesting profiles that on the surface would be possible to entice here, as opposed to longshots. I'm sure people in the know or those with more time to research could come up with a better and more extensive list.

T.J. Rushing (A&M DB coach) - former Stanford DB has built a strong unit and turned down a lateral move to Alabama. Ready to be a DC.
Scott Huff (UW OL coach) - could be out of a job soon, former OC under Petersen at BSU.
Paul Gonzales (TCU safeties coach) - on a very good run, UC Davis graduate, status uncertain given coaching change.
Keary Colbert (USC receivers coach) - has coached numerous college receiver studs and high draft picks, status uncertain given coaching change.
Lance Taylor (ND RB coach) - former Stanford coach, ready to be an OC.
Ryan Grubb (Fresno OC and QB coach) - Tedford protege who has run very successful offenses, background as OL and strength coach.
Will Harris (UW DB coach) - former player at USC and coach at San Jose State, status uncertain given coaching change.
Jamar Cain (Oklahoma OLB/DE coach) - former ASU and Fresno DL coach, tremendous recruiter.
Keenan Bailey (Ohio State quality control assistant) - works with QBs and WRs, former Notre Dame recruiting analyst.

Very interesting list of coaches with west coast ties.

"It took a once in a lifetime bundle of energy to make it work at Stanford and it’s not going to happen again. Credit to Shaw for hanging on to Harballs magic for a few years."

Well, a little magic and a couple of generational players.  Any guesses on what our 2015 and 2016 records would be without McCaffrey? Top to bottom,  do we have any players on this team that could have started in 2015?

BD: Don't know who was quoted but the "once-in-lifetime bundle of energy" caught my attention. This is white-flag waving defeatism. In my lifetime, I've seen Ralston, Walsh, Green and Harbaugh. Each destroyed the defeatist myth about Stanford's inability to run with the Big Dogs (so to speak).
We need another one. He's out there. Find and hire him. As for players today who could have started in 2015? To ask that question is to answer it. Some starters today wouldn't have seen the field then, certainly not a decade ago.

To the best of my knowledge, Shaw has not fired a single assistant coach in his 11 years as head coach. I’ll believe changes are coming when I see them.

Nor should he be…

However, he should take a long, hard look at his staff because some changes do need to be made at that level.

When making those changes, he should consider the direction the game is heading and act accordingly.  Heck, even Nick Saban, after fighting against the concept of a hurry-up offense finally capitulated and installed a version of that offense.

Agree he should make changes.  Disagree on hurry up etc.  Stanford is always best when it is different. That was true with Ralston, when they were running a pro-style offense.  With Walsh and the West Coadt. And with JH/Shaw with power oriented complimentary football. Why doesn’t Shaw look at Shanahans offense?  Run oriented. Physical.  But very creative.

Still, the big issue is recruiting.  They have to do better.

Both the sec and big 10 are throwing the ball more and more, it used to be the WAC, Mountain West and the Pac 12 that were the only league who were chucking the ball all over the place.
