On the other hand, I have no problem whatsoever in ignoring the reputation scores shown on each post.  So much so that I'd honestly forgotten they exist.

I never noticed them, being a latecomer to the board. I would have liked to take a shot at Teejers:):):) Are they still up or have they been disabled.

RE: Cardboard ratings - rogpodge - 11-30-2021

Just go back to the old system.  No one should really care.  Those with negative ratings probably carry it as a a badge of honor.  Those with positive ratings get a dopamine hit.

In under 12 hours of discussion.......

I actually pay attention to which of my posts got +1 or -1, and by whom and for what reason, if they said.  Maybe I stepped on toes;  maybe I inadvertently gave a different impression than I meant.   And, yeah, the +1s are rewards for my contributions to the board.  They do feel good.

I probably give out maybe five -1's in a year, generally for negative comments about (specific or general) people.  I probably should give out +1's more often, but its probably about twice as often as the -1s.   In the past two weeks, I gave out a +1 for an informative post by a poster who always brings outside info to us, and a +1 for another user who brings good inside info.  Sometime in the past  month I gave a -1 to a post that I thought was too disrespectful of someone.   I put a comment with the rating to say why.

IMO, the +1/-1 should not be a vote saying you agree/disagree with the post's position, but whether you felt it was a very useful or informative post or, alternatively, a post that is coming close to being contrary to the etiquette on this board.  In aggregate, it gives a community voice on the reputation of the poster. I'm not surprised if someone goes negative. (Only -10? That is a surprise.) This isn't an event where everyone gets a participation award.

It is apparent that there are a few posters that seem to make posts that I see as negative: negative opinions about performance, teams, players, and  coaches;  challenges to other posters;  casting those that have different opinions into classes;  a general lack of respect.  There have been more of that kind of posting recently, which has made my experience here more negative.  I've recently thought about walking away and leaving this board to them.

On the other hand, there are posters that bring light to this board.  Good inside info, often breaking news;  Good historical info;  Good outside info.  Some are apparently former athletes and bring knowledge & viewpoints that I don't have.  Their expertise & effort at making an informative post helps me to enjoy the sports more.  They're the ones that I feel deserve +1s.   Without the +1/-1, I'll have to remember to say "Thanks" in other ways. Thanks guys & gals.

This. So. Much. This.

Also, I've noticed that the person who coined the phrase "More signal. Less noise." Has stopped posting.

RE: Cardboard ratings - Softball Fan - 12-01-2021

I’ve given quite a few +1 ratings for exceptionally good info or analysis.  I’ve never given a -1 and doubt I ever would.

A poster like M T brings a lot of solid information to the board. He deserves high ratings.   Also BobK and joemontes should be recognized for their contributions.  The reputation rating is one way to do that.

RE: Cardboard ratings - martyup - 12-01-2021

I doubt MT, BobK, or Joe will lower their contributions absent the rating system.

Agreed.  If, for example, a poster supported range factor as a legitimate Hall of Fame criteria for a catcher, one could give the post a thumbs-down...

But I would give a thumbs up for this comment, for example.

How much does windage factor in the range factor. AJ blew the most wind in baseball history.

RE: Cardboard ratings - fullmetal - 12-07-2021

Either everyone should be participating in the ratings system, or no one should -- all too easy for motivated, disaffected folks to drag others down.  This is also a small enough community where we ought not have these issues...!

We users probably don't know how frequent or rare it is that it is that "motivated, disaffected folks to drag others down".
The admins probably do.   In years of being here, as a user I've only heard of it happening twice.  One of those was when it happened to me years ago.  I contacted the admins and the issue was solved within the day.   We are an open community and new people join at any time.

RE: Cardboard ratings - oldalum - 12-08-2021

how about allowing only up ratings, no down ratings?

That would be my proposal.  And it was also my personal approach.  Recognize the good (+1), ignore (or rebut) the bad (no rating).

RE: Cardboard ratings - BobK - 12-08-2021

I don’t believe I’ve ever done a down rating only up. Great idea for up only
