Baez87 - Baez87 - 12-06-2021

Not sure if this post should be in this general category or in a thread of its own.
This weeks AP Poll just came out. Stanford maintains its #4 ranking, three other PAC-12 teams maintain their top twenty-five status, and three PAC-12 teams received points, but little status. Arizona, at #6, continues to climb in the rankings.

Paige Bueckers:

https://news.yahoo.com/fans-slammed-uconns-geno-auriemma-171119909.html

Speculation by a coach is not much of an update but that's the title of the article:

https://www.yahoo.com/now/no-2-uconn-vs-no-201505449.html

On Saturday UConn plays UCLA probably without Bueckers or Fudd.

RE: WBB upcoming games - CompSci87 - 12-06-2021

It's easy to say in hindsight after an injury that starters should be pulled in a blowout to avoid injury, but really, anyone (starter or backup) can be injured any time they are playing. The end of a blowout isn't a much more likely time to get injured than any other time. Maybe a bit more if it's getting chippy or fatigue is a factor.

You certainly can question Geno playing his starters so much even in blowouts. The main arguments I see are that he should give his bench some experience, should not overwork his starters, and (maybe) shouldn't run up the score. This injury isn't really what proves he should play the bench more.

RE: WBB upcoming games - chimera - 12-06-2021

Geno is notorious for not playing his bench even in blowouts.  He keeps top 5 recruits sitting.  They get a lot of transfers out and that is probably some of it.  Why go there if you hardly play?

If what he said about Bueckers is true, that she pesters him on the bench for more playing time (seems like a thing that is maybe not true but he has said it before so I don't know), that doesn't speak well of her.  I mean what about your teammates who want to get into a game?  She already plays big minutes, don't be a hog.  I tend to believe Geno is just yacking and she is not sitting on the bench asking him to put her in more.  I sure hope not, anyway.  I hope her injury is minor and she is back quickly.

I hope so too, but it looked like the knee buckled a bit. More serious injury wouldn't surprise me.

Oh yeah, there is a big possibility that current #6 Arizona will climb past current #4 Stanford in the AP Polls, given their respective upcoming remaining OOC schedule prior to the start of PAC 12 play:

Arizona:
******
12/09  vs. North Dakota State
12/12  vs. New Mexico
12/17  @  North Arizona
12/19  vs. #11 Texas

Stanford:
*******
12/12  vs. Pacific
12/15  vs. UC Davis
12/18  @  #9 Tennessee
12/21  @  #1 South Carolina

Unlike Stanford, I think Arizona has the guard play to easily break Texas defensive pressure, and they even have a more suffocating defensive pressure to counteract Texas' offense. It will be a tight battle, but I see Arizona prevailing by a squeaker, and coming out of their OOC schedule with a clean 11-0 slate.

Meanwhile, I have already penciled Stanford losing to South Carolina in two weeks, something that the Gamecocks really are salivating to win after the bitter taste of their heartbreaking loss to the Cardinal in last season's Final Four.  I don't know how Stanford will match up against Tennessee, but I hope Stanford can come out the winner in that game, and have a 3-1 W/L result over the next two weeks prior to Pac 12 play, for a final OOC record of 8-3.

As for the rest of the PAC 12 teams, except for Colorado with its relatively cupcake schedule, the rest of the projected upper echelon teams including Oregon, Oregon State and UCLA has had disappointing results. In the case of Oregon and UCLA, it's unfortunately due to injuries to their major players - Oregon with PAOPAO, ROGERS and SABALLY; UCLA with BESSOIR (who is lost for the season), DUGALIC and projected starting PG Gina CONTI.

Of course a player can be injured at anytime during a game, but they can’t be injured if they are not playing. Doctors and many coaches are concerned that basketball player, especially women players who are far more susceptible to debilitating injuries, should play less, not more. Geno likes to keep his starters in the game until the final buzzer. It pads team and individual stats and gives his stars more visibility. It also exposes his players to injury.

RE: WBB upcoming games - BostonCard - 12-06-2021

OTOH, we all remember when Kristin Folkl was injured in practice.  The Bueckers injury was a freak, non-contact injury.  It happened at the end of a game, but it didn’t happen because she was in at the end of a game.  Lots of reasons she shouldn’t have been playing, but a freak injury isn’t one of them.

Irregardless of who is to blame for BUECKER's freak accidental injury, she will most likely miss 2 - 4 weeks minimum if her injury is just a hyperextended knee.

Which means she will miss the remainder of UConn's OOC schedule which includes #30 Georgia Tech (which just handed #21 Georgia its first loss of the season) on the road, #31 UCLA at a neutral site, and at home vs. #7 Louisville.  UConn is capable of winning all of those games without her, but they can also lose all of those games.

Beyond that, UConn is just fortunate that they belong to a weak conference, so even without BUECKERS, they can probably waltz through the Big East conference unblemished.  Because, come on, they still have 2 former #1 overall recruits in Chistyn WILLIAMS (2018) and Azzi FUDD (2021), a former #2 overall recruit in Evina WESTBROOK (2017), and two former #5 overall recruits in Olivia NELSON-ODODA (2018) and Caroline DUCHARME (2021)

RE: WBB upcoming games - TheFarm07 - 12-07-2021

Bueckers out 6-8 weeks with a tibial plateau fracture.

I think the argument is that yes, an injury can happen anytime in a game or during practice, but one of the reasons why you start pulling your starters with a big lead late in the game, is that you reduce the risk of such a random injury that Bueckers suffered when the game result has already been determined and there is not a good reason for your stars to stay in the game.

RE: WBB upcoming games - oldalum - 12-07-2021

That is not a good fracture because it is involves the articular surface. She will need to be non-weight bearing on that leg for much of that time, and will lose conditioning and muscle strength. This is a serious injury.

RE: WBB upcoming games - Card10Fan - 12-07-2021

I honestly was expecting the recovery timeline to be much longer. Thought it might be season ending. Wishing her a speedy recovery. i've grumbled about this before  but as a fan the way Uconn comes out with a press release describing the injury and timeline is IMO the best approach. Stanford takes a different approach and stays mum about any injury leaving fans to speculate. The same type of release should have been provided when Haley went out with her knee injury or Dijonai but no one would say anything. '

I wonder how many games Uconn will lose without her? Hoping a few!

I suffered this injury in a skiing accident, and what's said here about the recovery period is right on. Absolutely non-weight bearing on that leg for up to two months which definitely means limited ability to condition leg strength in either leg. She also will lose some range of motion in the injured knee, at least until serious PT can reverse it for her. Yes, a serious injury, and a tricky one to deal with. At least upper body strength can be enhanced from using crutches, which I assume will be her approach.

Baez87 - Baez87 - 12-07-2021

Bueckers was knocked to the floor twice in the second half, once from a straight-on hit under the basket while playing defense, and a second time from a shove as she sidled up to the ball handler just passed mid-court. These collisions happened before her no-contact fall while bringing the ball up the floor in the final seconds. I have not idea if any of those collisions could have a cumulative effect on a bone fracture later in the game, but I’ll bet the Husky fans will make such speculation.
Wondering what our fellow threaders, who know about such things, think…

Assuming she comes back after 8 weeks, she will then miss the following games until Feb 8, 2022:

OOC:
12/09  -  @  #30 Georgia Tech
12/11  -  vs. #31 UCLA  (neutral site)
12/19  -  vs. #7 Loiusville

Big East:
12/29  -  vs. Marquette
12/31  -  @  DePaul
01/05  -  @  Georgetown
01/07  -  @  Villanova
01/09  -  vs. Creighton
01/12  -  @  Butler
01/15  -  vs.  Xavier

OOC:
01/17  -  @  # 27 Oregon

Big East:
01/21  -  vs. Seton Hall
01/23  -  @  St. John's

OOC:
01/27  -  @  #1 South Carolina

Big East:
01/30  -  @  Providence
02/02  -  @  Creighton
02/04  -  vs. Butler

OOC:
02/06  -  vs. #9 Tennessee

The most probable losses would be @ #30 Georgia Tech, #7 Louisville, @ #1 South Carolina,
and @ #27 Oregon (assuming that Oregon's currently injured Top 3 players SABALLY, PAOPAO
and ROGERS are already all playing for Oregon by 01/17)

I wouldn't be surprised if Geno does not use her services until the end of the regular season,
and just prepare her for the NCAA Tournament.

The silver lining to this is that Geno will be forced to play her back-up PG Nika MUHL and
his top 2 recruits from the Class of 2022 -#1 overall FUDD and #5 overall DUCHARME -
much more minutes than planned. With that, he will still have a very good 8-player rotation:

Starters:
*******
PF - Aaliyah EDWARDS              #21 - Class of 2020
CC - Olivia NELSON-ODODA     #5 - Class of 2018
SG - Chistyn WILLIAMS             #1 - Class of 2018
SG - Evina WESTBROOK            #2 - Class of 2017
PG - Nika MUHL

Reserves:
*******
PF/CC - Dorka JUHASZ
SG/PG - Azzi FUDD                    #1 - Class of 2021
SF/SG - Caroline DUCHARME    #5 - Class of 2021

RE: WBB upcoming games - WBB fan - 12-08-2021

Seems to me that this thread has morphed into an entirely different topic -- one of interest, definitely, but maybe we should rename this?  Just a thought.

RE: WBB upcoming games - Card10Fan - 12-08-2021

How about a non Stanford women's basketball news page. Anything women's college basketball related separate from the Cardinal.

RE: WBB upcoming games - triangle2 - 12-08-2021

I think we should have a 'thread drift of the year' award. The winner's user icon changes to a big +1 for the following year. Or to thunder chik's old gif which honestly is my favorite of all time.

This thread would be in the running for that award!  And even more so now
