"Solid" = Pac-12 honorable mention, HIGHEST OFFENSIVE GRADE ON THE ENTIRE TEAM and 3rd best C in the conference per PFF. He was not the reason the line sucked.

Seems like we now have 5 in football S&C up from 3.

S&C was never at 3. That was the athletic training staff (which is also at 5 again and has been for 2 years).
Also, new transfer S Patrick Fields has one year of eligibility (Covid year).

Added transfer safety Patrick Fields, who is a fifth year and has already played four years, but has an extra year due to 2020 not counting. What an outstanding get. I penciled him in as starter; if he started for Oklahoma (and was all-Big 12 HM), I'm guessing he'll be our best safety.

Suddenly, we have a bit of depth at the position.

Scholarship counter now at 88. Three must depart roster.

Looks like Fields is on a full academic scholarship (aka full financial aid and not a football scholarship), so he's effectively a walk-on. Will start regardless.

Interesting. Figured that after he was admitted he'd be given a scholarship. Wow. Probably the most accomplished walk-on we've ever had. Also, our first-ever fifth-year non-scholarship player?

What a gift - not only his ability, but his addition sans scholarship spot.

If he plays, he will be a “counter” to the 85 scholarship limit, regardless of whether the source of his funds are the athletics department or his academic department.

Calling him a walk-on seems to underestimate his athletic accomplishments; not calling him a walk-on probably underestimates his academic ones.

Interesting that the article says that he only played in four games in 2021 to re-gain his redshirt. He did not need to do so since his 2020 season did not count against his eligibility. I guess he has two years of eligibility left, though I'm guessing he's aiming for the NFL after this next season.

It's about quality, not quantity.

While I'm thrilled about the news about Kelly, Wilson, and Fields, I'm seriously concerned that there has been no news about changes in coaching staff. Not a good sign for next season.

For Shaw to make helpful changes to the coaching staff, he needs to have qualified applicants interested in the position. If you were a hot commodity in the coaching world, would you join a staff that could well be fired en masse next year at a program that has 10 wins total over the last 3 seasons?

Your point stands, but it's 11 wins over the last 2.5 seasons.

Assistant coaches join programs in trouble all the time.  Harbaugh hired seven assistant coaches to Michigan in the off-season (one was hired but then got hired away to become a head coach in Buffalo), despite the perception he was on thin ice and that this was going to be a tough season.  Brian Kelley famously hired all new coordinators after the 4-8 2016 season when Kelly was given an ultimatum and his future at Notre Dame was questionable.  Obviously, it would be tougher to compete against other, more successful programs, if you are struggling, but there will always be ambitious young assistants who would relish the chance to move up to coordinator or successful coaches at a lower division program who would look forward to working at a P5 program, even one that is struggling.

Also, money helps.
