There are 20 books in Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series. In some ways, the 20 books can be viewed as one very long novel, with various plot lines and characters that develop throughout the series.
The movie drew from several of the books, mostly book #10 (The Far Side of the World) and book #1 (Master and Commander) if I recall correctly. I liked the movie, but it definitely wasn't a faithful adaptation of the book series. The movie's approach of picking out parts of various books and joining them together disregarded the continuity of the book series.

Well, only a character like James Bond gets 20 plus movies. There were only six Thin Man pictures and they were all hits. I don't think box office was too great for M&C.

Twenty five years ago ITV brought four Hornblower pictures to television. They might have been broadcast on PBS or A&E (can’t remember). Some hoopla in the UK, kind of buried in the U.S. The series lacked the energy of Master....
I would rather see a picture with Aubrey at the end of his career but still swashbuckling with a peg leg and gastritis as long as it is played by Crowe. A young Aubrey played by somebody young and insipid like Timothy Chalomet would probably drive me to drink or to ralph.

That's how I feel about Alden Ehrenreich playing Han Solo. Big let down IMO.
