Before anyone buries Cincinnati as a "Group of 5 doesn't belong," there are a whole lot of Power 5 teams who could have been similarly curb stomped in a playoff semi-final against Alabama.

UC did hold Alabama to its 3rd lowest point total of the season (27), the only lower ones were 20 to LSU and 24 to Auburn...

I don't think (m)any believe Cincy was undeserving of a CFP spot.  And without question, Alabama would have beaten down many an opponent in semis.  I'm hoping (and expecting) Michigan-Georgia to be more competitive.  But if either team gets out to a big lead early, things could snowball as those defenses might just be in attack-the-QB mode.  Don't see that happening, but we'll find out soon enough.

This game decided, imo, at LOS.  Both teams run.  Both teams stop the run. Both have solid but not spectacular QB’s. Whichever team controls the LOS wins.  Absent, of course, turnovers.

Georgia 28-21.  But won’t surprise me if Michigan wins.

Brock Bowers is a beast. Freshman of the year. Napa.  Years ago he would’ve gone to a California school – probably SC much as I hate to say it. But these days…

I remember when the Cotton Bowl was played at the Cotton Bowl. On the grounds of one of the best State Fairs. State Fair more fun than the Cotton Bowl.

Texas State Fair, home of one of the largest selections of deep fried food in the world....

Yep.  Great coach obviously. Even better recruiter. They have the one or two class every single year. So unbelievable talent and he knows what to do with it.

Yes, Lex, he is a good recruiter and probably a better coach, but what challenges does he have when recruiting?  Is he going to lose a recruit because he can't get past admissions?
He is a good coach, maybe a great coach at a school who will let any athlete in who meets the NCAA requirements.  A whole different ball game than what Shaw has to deal with.  To prove he is really both a great coach and a great recruiter he needs to go somewhere that won't rubber stamp every application he wants approved.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - OutsiderFan - 12-31-2021

My gawd could I not be more profoundly disappointed in Michigan. I was genuinely looking forward to this game and anticipating something classic. Instead?  27-3 at halftime.

Nothing in college football is worse than the prospect of the team that got destroyed by Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, destroying the Big Ten Champion and getting another shot at Alabama in the National Championship game. Nothing. It will give everyone the evidence to show a conference championship game loser shouldn't be eliminated from playoff (at least in a 4-team format).

To me there is something inherently un-sports-like to give the loser of a championship game a playoff berth. This game provides people who want to argue that point ammunition I'd rather they not have available for them to use.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - needle - 12-31-2021

At half, Georgia 27, Michigan 3.

I posted elsewhere that I wasn't buying the Michigan hype. I never thought they could run against a legit great defense, and they lack the kind of weapons in the passing game that a school like 'Bama has.

His rivals (Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma et al) also rubber stamp every application their coaches want approved, yet it's Saban who has won 7 of the last 14 national championships.

Does anyone think the fifth through eighth best teams would have fared any better, let alone expanding through 12 teams?

No, but does anybody really believe Cincinnati would have been in the semi-finals if there were 6, 8 or 12 teams?

More importantly, if there were 12 teams in the CFP then it is really unlikely Alabama would be able to hoard most of the 5 star recruits.

Right now they credibly can claim that 'Bama is the best path to the CFP and the NFL.   There are ~15 teams fighting for 3 spots each year, but 'Bama is the one team you know will be in the CFP.   That's such a recruiting advantage/benefit.

If more teams were in the CFP, then Bama would probably have to work a little bit harder to hoard all of the 5 star talent.   They would still be good, but right now a lot of athletes from other regions are going to 'Bama because they correctly assess that 'Bama is the best bet to play in multiple CFPs.

The NCS is about having the 4 best teams. You can’t seriously suggest Georgia wasn’t in the top 4 .  They were undefeated in the regular season.  And lost to the best program in the Country in a Championship game.

Georgia is a great team. As they are showing. For them not to be in final four would have been a travesty.

BTW - what “point ammunition “ are you referring to?

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - BostonCard - 12-31-2021

Georgia, Michigan is even more lopsided, but would anyone have bet against Michigan into stage semifinals of a 6/8/12 team playoff?

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - Phogge - 12-31-2021

I didn’t watch either game. Who cares? It’s a closed system. All the more amazing what Harballs did at Stanford. The SEC is equivalent to baseball’s Triple A.

I’ll watch the Rose Bowl because I either was there often or because I watched the Rose Bowl when I was a little kid and was mesmerized.

Alabama/Georgia for the trophy. BFD.

For those who watched were there any masks in evidence in the stands?

For those who don’t TCM is running all the Thin Man pictures. Accompanied by KDFC.

Alabama - Georgia.  As it should be.  Football at the HS level is more and more a Southern game, with Texas and Oklahoma thrown in.  Look at a list of top recruits.  Heavily Southern.. And the Calif kids in the list don’t stick around as much.

The difference between an Alabama/ Georgia and any team  in PAC 12 is enormous.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - Goose - 12-31-2021

Harbaugh did an amazing coaching job this year. Yes, he had several things go his way, but as tonight makes clear, he really didn't have the horses. The fact he won the B1G this year was a tribute to his courage and his decision making. It also says a lot about his leadership that his guys didn't bail on him after a horrendous 2020 year.
Next year is going to be a real challenge for Michigan. Expectations are now raised all out of proportion to what they actually have. They lose a ton of talent on defense. Offense wasn't all that great as it was. JH has his work cut out. Fun to watch what happens. Anything, great or horrible, is possible IMHO.

Finally got a conference title and beat tOSU, so after a few days they will realize that's not all that bad.  A good season, but not a great season.

Michigan should now be able to get more recruits from the Great Lakes region, but the Michigan weather will remain a big negative for those from the SEC footprint (now including Texas).

Harbaugh still only has one CFP/NY6 bowl win (with Luck) and is only 2-6 in bowl games.    That bowl record is a bit troubling for a guy that hopes to remain the coach of the winningest program in college football.

I understand your point but IMHO it was a great season given the year before and the talent they had. On paper, they were probably the fourth best team in the B1G East, (and that is giving Michigan the benefit of the doubt as I have noted before). To do what they did and accomplish what they accomplished under those circumstances was amazing.

It also doesn't help that he gets lots of guys who are highly rated but just don't deliver on their ratings (sounding like another program we know perhaps?). JH has been trying to get faster for years and it just hasn't worked. This year he was able to fall back on being a more physical team than his opponents, but in most years against tOSU that won't work, as JH is well aware. So next year does he go back to plan A of "speed in space" or does he stay with being more physical? If he goes more physical, can his defense stand up well enough to make it work? Fun to watch.

Please. I don't think Saban has much left, if anything, to prove. As for recruiting, frankly, it's not an easy task to convince a kid to go spend four years in Tuscaloosa, especially if you're not from the South.

Why, yawn?  They play terrific football.  I’m looking forward to the Championship game.  That they are two SEC team doesn’t bother me in the least. I truly don’t understand it. If there’s a better team out there that you feel you’d rather watch then by all means let me know. But Alabama boat raced Cincinnati and then Georgia did the same thing to Michigan. Proving beyond a shadow of the doubt that they’re the best two teams in the nation. The teams that should be playing for the championship. If you feel otherwise by all means give me some facts to support it.
