At this point, BRINK should be the frontrunner:
#1 in Rebounds
#2 in Blocked Shots
#3 in FG%
#9 in Scoring
for the entire PAC 12 Conference, for the #2 team in the nation, #1 team in the conference, in only 21.5 minutes/game
BUT....
There is still the 2nd half of PAC 12 regular season and the PAC 12 conference tournament to play,
before they give out the award for POY....

Cam picked up her 4th POW honor (and 2nd in a row) with two dominant performances against the L.A. schools this past weekend. Michelle Smith wrote the following in her conference round-up on Thursday (so right before the L.A. trip):
“Keep an eye on: Sophomore center Cameron Brink, with her third Pac-12 Player of the Award award this season, is starting to solidify front-runner status for Pac-12 Player of the Year after her 25-point, 15-rebound effort against Arizona on Sunday.”

Also worth noting:
Cam is #1 in the conference in PTS/40 min. at 26.5 PTS/40 min.
Right behind her at #2?
Fran, at 25.5 PTS/40 min.

I’m sure Kiki doesn’t have enough minutes to qualify and you might be able to argue that she is not going up against the opposing team’s top defensive forwards as often, but Kiki is currently at 27.9 points per 40 minutes, ahead of Cam and everyone else. Against USC at first I thought Kiki was struggling against the towering Akunwafo (who is going to be very formidable with more experience), but those two consecutive moves Kiki put on her (one with the euro-step, reverse layup on the break and the other with the zig-zag drive from the top of the key) we just absolute things of beauty.
Even with Cam and Fran and Ashten back next year and Lauren Betts coming in, I’m telling you that we have to find starter’s minutes for Kiki next year. Kiki, keep working on that three pointer (and your passing) so Tara has no choice but to start you or make you the first one off the bench.

Great points! Maybe Tara can toy around with an all-post/forward lineup next season? (I'm only half-joking)

Kiki again turning in an extremely efficient performance yesterday with 10 points (4-5 shooting), 3 rebounds and no fouls in 8 minutes. Next year is going to be sweet.

I think Haley boosted her chances of being P12 POY after this weekend. She's the one capable of putting the team on her back and wrestling a victory from the jaws of defeat.
Currently, Cam can have higher highs, but she can also have lower lows. Despite the bad turnovers (usually because she is trying for great instead of settling for good enough), Haley is usually clutch in crunch time.
RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? -
martyup - 02-22-2022
It seems that Haley handles the pressure of important tough games better than Cameron. I think Haley's problem is lack of focus in easier games and Cam's problem is trying too hard in tough games.
RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? -
Card10Fan - 02-22-2022
My vote is Cam. One could argue the Arizona game was just as important as Oregon. Cam had 25 points in that game and Haley was 2/12 with 6 turnovers. Cams Pac12 stats are better than Haley’s and she’s been more consistent. Cam is going to win POY.
It would be nice in some big games if both played well at the same time. If seems when one plays well the other struggles. Tennessee, SC, Arizona, Oregon

For obvious reasons, people focus on easy-to-count stats.
I look at Haley's failure to guard her player, leading to easy shots by a wide-open player. I think Haley wants to play being the hero, so you see the things she does, not what she doesn't do. For every time she comes out of the blue to do something great on defense, there's more than one wide-open shot by an opponent. She can slash but has no 3-pt shot (even Cam has a better 3pt%) I'd vote for her for a Most Athletic Player award, but not POY.
As for Cameron, some more games like the last two, and she won't even be playing half the game (currently 21.2 min/game). IMO, she shouldn't be POY if she doesn't play half the game. When she's in the game, she's great. I'd ding her for her FT% as well. It would be interesting if someone nominated her for the 6th player award. She does have the 6th most minutes on the team. That might be what she SHOULD win.
I would vote Lexie over the previous two. She's played essentially 50% more minutes than Cameron, has more points than Haley. (Besides, she's done what it takes to stay healthy - she & her sister are the only ones that have played every game.) If there were an award for Dependable Player of the Year, she should win it easily. Too bad Prudential doesn't sponsor a Gibraltar award.
RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? -
akiddoc - 02-22-2022
I think Lexie Hull is the MVP. She won't win, but she is the glue that makes this team better more than anyone else. Her defense is tenacious. She has big offensive games when needed. Reminds me of Draymond Green at his best.
Brink disappears when challenged by physical bigs. And gets into foul trouble. I'd rather see Fran in the game under those circumstances.
RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? -
chimera - 02-22-2022
This season is a tough one for picking a conference POY. There is no obvious candidate from teams below Stanford are there? Oregon's stars missed a lot of time, and none of them is head and shoulders above other top conference players. UA is a balanced sort of team, unlike last season, with no obvious candidate, at least to me. We are so far ahead of the Pac it would be silly to give it to a player from another team. We are also so deep that none of our players racks up the minutes and stats that they might. Jones and Brink are the top choices probably, but if they gave it to Lexie that would be cool too. A shared award, somehow?
RE: Cameron Brink for Pac-12 POY? -
TheWildJacko - 02-23-2022
I mean, if Anna and Aari McDonald can share Co-Defensive POY, then conceivably two Stanford players could share co-POY (or even 3, but that is much less likely).

Jones in the NCAA tournament last year - 5 for 8 on 3 pointers. Rest of the season - 1 for 9.
Someone Something in the water in San Antonio?
And for all of her bad decisions and turnovers (usually on passes), her assist-to-TO ratio still is above 1 (83 to 68 this season, 92 to 78 last season).
Yes, she can get caught out of position on defense (maybe following the ball instead of her player). But she has great instinct on rebounds.
In short, she is an incredibly gifted player who could be more dominant with smarter play and a little more focus.
On a related topic, who should be P12 coach of the year?

Statistical analysis is such fun! Not always sure how meaningful it is, especially when running numbers on convoluted statistics, but still worth doing, just because. At any rate, this is an interesting one.

We all (including me) jump to thinking Tara, but I think a case could be made for Kamie Ethridge at WSU. Note that the pre-season poll had them picked to finish 6th in the conference, and they are currently tied with Oregon for 2nd place. I hope they will drop to 3rd after Thursday, but in any event, succeeding way beyond expectations should count in the Coach of the Year selection. We'll be seeing her tomorrow night -- could be a challenging game. (Not too challenging, I hope -- I certainly don't want this to be the game in which WSU finally manages to beat Stanford, for the first time ever.)
