If the coach isn’t fired then it’s clear that nobody in the university administration cares about having a competitive basketball program. They are satisfied with a tremendous women’s program. So, why even bother having a program.

TV guys said Muir and the Pres. were at the game.

The offense has more fluidity with Raynaud in the game. Keefe has definitely improved tremendously but he is not a threat unless he is near the basket. With Raynaud’s ability to shoot mid-long range, defense cannot sag on him.

Who was Raynaud blowing kisses to during the game?

To visit Phil Knight.

Agree, Raynaud needs to play more.
Blowing kisses to his fans after that beautiful bank 3 pointer from the top of the key.

A truly voluntary departure is more likely than a firing, I think.

Haase has probably had just enough recruiting success to be attractive to schools not looking to break the bank (e.g. K-State). Not sure whether he thinks it's a better bet for his career aspirations to get a fresh start.

Schools "aspiring" to mediocrity have a perpetual abundance of candidates from which to choose. You can put Haase right in there. Glad I had season tix during the Monty era. Some great memories. "And he was FOULED!"

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Oregon, 6 pm Thursday, ESPN2 - Farm93 - 02-11-2022

I would be OK with a ~500 team if it was just more satisfying to watch.

So many possessions seem to feature one person dribbling forever.  Then eventually that person tries a 1 on 1 move that gets them to a bad part of the floor with either a bad shot or a bad pass as the only options.

I understand that every team will be in that situation a few times a game, but the Haase offense seems to rely on that type of static, unstructured play.   One might think with better talent this might work over the majority of the teams in the weak Pac-12, but Stanford has now landed a few very good players and the results have not been that much better with NBA first round level talent.

That noted, I have come to realize that Haase should be a motivational speaker after his coaching is complete.  Whatever he has been saying to keep his job could be bundled into a great seminar.

Hah! Good one. Thing is, there are a lot of motivational speakers out there. The former coaches among them have typically been the ones with big time credentials and charisma. Haase checks neither box.

How about playing Renault and Keefe or Murrel and sitting Delaire?

Delaire had zero points last night. I would bring him off the bench.
Also, don't forget Angel. He is improving.
I would play Raynaud more...he will just improve.

Sure, eliminate it. No one will care.
Just like no one cared when we tried to eliminate all those sports recently.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Oregon, 6 pm Thursday, ESPN2 - SamuelMcF - 02-11-2022

This is exactly what I predicted yesterday, including the "fire Haase" comments. He ain't going anywhere.

Losing on the road to the 3rd-best team in the conference (LOOK AT HOW WELL OREGON IS DOING) by pretty much exactly the Vegas line is not "the sky is falling."

Let's save that for losing a gimme, which we have many chances at from here on out. So far there are no real bad losses (i.e. losses to teams definitively worse than us) on the season. Santa Clara is NET #67 and on the bubble, by the way.

If the team loses @ Oregon State (AWFUL), vs. Utah (bad), vs. Colorado (biggest toss-up remaining), @ Cal (AWFUL), or @ASU (bad but may be a trap game) then I feel the crowing is more valid. This final 6-game stretch will determine once again the validity of the patented "Haase February collapse." Of course we will lose @ Arizona, a potential Final Four team, so it's really the other 5 games in the stretch.

Oh, and the team was pre-season picked 9th in conference, and basically everyone comes back next year.

I was busy adding the thread for the OSU game so just saw SamuelMcF's comment now, but you can append everything that he said above re: Coach Haase and possible future outcomes to what I said in the OSU thread.

I think you're focusing way too much on the current season.  No one (as far as I can recall) is saying that the problem is that Haase is losing to bad teams this year.  The problem is mediocrity, year in and year out, and failing to make the Tourney in all of his seasons.  You can narrow in on other specific failings that Haase's teams have each year (turnovers, bad shot selection, fading towards the end of the season).  But the bottom line is that he's not producing a good product, and I don't see signs that he's getting better at coaching.

Not losing to bad teams is a very, very weak test, and passing that test does not make Haase a good coach.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Oregon, 6 pm Thursday, ESPN2 - AlbanyCardinal - 02-11-2022

Oh, don't forget losing to Udub. That's the kind of loss that seals this team's fate. I also think losing by nearly 20 to Santa Clara was demoralizing, irrespective of that team's net ranking.

As for the fire Haase posts, my memory is that most were pretty nuanced critiques of Haase's misuse of matchups and players on this team. It's not so much losing to that squad as it is how it was lost. Stanford has built-in disadvantages, starting with no transfers year in and year out. Last thing this program needs is a coach who can't or won't maximize whatever talent and personnel he has at his disposal.

Also, if the team was "more satisfying to watch," that would most likely mean it's playing well and thus winning more games.

I am OK with a fun entertaining team, much as the Monty teams of the late 80s and early 90s tended to be.   They were not the most athletic, or likely to land at the top of the conference.   But each night you could go to Maples and see a bunch of guys playing well as a team and generally keeping games close even when playing against teams with vastly superior athletes.

As I watch Haase's teams each year has a similar progression.

Early in the year, when many quality programs are hunting for an identity, Haase can get some decent wins and the team shows promise.
By mid year, many of the teams in conference know which one or two Stanford athletes to shutdown, but some of the weakest teams are not quite able to beat Stanford, especially in Maples.
By the end of the season, almost everybody knows how to stop the Stanford star of the year, and Stanford loses to almost everyone in every arena.

The sad reality is that for several years Stanford fans have been reduced to dreaming of a single 11th seed opportunity.   Of course, 11 seeds routinely get blasted in the first round of the tournament, so the unattainable aspiration is actually mediocrity.

I am not sure much above the 11 seed level is possible with NIL, transfer portals, and the Pac-12s low energy arenas, so I would like to see smart and clever play.   Teams with accurate shooters, and players that don't generate a lot of unforced turnovers every night.

Last part is still TBD this season. 2 losses to the #2 and #3 team in the conference don't constitute "almost everyone." We have 5 easier games than those coming up (and a slaughter @ Arizona that we should just start our walk-ons in to avoid injury).

A loss @ Oregon State or @ Cal or vs. Utah, of course, would certainly confirm it and probably feel all too familiar to us and the team.
