RE: New MBB coach? - triangle2 - 02-18-2022

Reveno's tenure at Portland is basically disqualifying. Going 140-178 and staying regularly in the lower half of the WCC with not even a single NIT bid isn't the kind of thing that gets you a second chance to coach in a Power Five conference.

A coach I hope they would consider, and is available next year, is coach K......not Chewy at Dook, but Krystowiak. I always liked him as a coach and think he got a raw deal when fired.
Agreed re: Krystowiak (especially if a package deal with the football coach!).

But I am (perhaps foolishly) clinging to notion that Haase may get 'er done next season.
No way on Krystowiak! Talk about mediocrity amidst a revolving door of transfers. Total DB.

It's a tough find, because i don't think there are many true proven winners in power 5 conferences lining up for the job. and it's easy to be fooled. I can recall a lot of support for Tinkle after last season. Look at him now. And how about Chris Mack? Didn't see that one coming. The odds of finding a savior aren't great.

Sure, but beggars can't be choosers. This is no longer a destination job, even for a former player.

That being said, Maddog seems to be having success at UVU with a small sample size. Amaker has won 7 Ivy League titles since 2011.

Maddog would be my first choice.

I could support Maddog 100%. ENhtusiastic recruiter I would think.

Maddog's entire starting 5 are transfers. Not a single grad transfer.

That type of success is not replicable here.

Everybody in the NCAA can gather transfers by the bushelful. Stanford stands pat. Bobbbbb will have great, great, great grandchildren before men's hoops wins the NCAA.... ergo, never.

RE: New MBB coach? - Sam Leopold - 02-19-2022

Joe Pasternack, current UCSB head coach (has made a few NCAA tourneys, including last year, and almost advanced)
Russell Turner, former Stanford assistant under Montgomery and current UC Irvine head coach (made tourney in 2015, first time in Anteaters program history, then again in 2019 and advanced a round)
Mark Madsen is doing some good things at Utah Valley this year but doubtful he's ready for prime time quite yet.

One year ago I was clamoring for Pasternack but now I'm warmer for Turner.  He has contributed to the historic pinnacle reached by this program and it would be very interesting to give him the opportunity to see how much of that success he could bring back as the lead man.

Any female candidates?  Tara's last hurrah?  Kate Paye?

RE: New MBB coach? - SamuelMcF - 02-20-2022

Would love to see Jarron Collins come home. Wants a HC job, hence moving on from the Warriors to be Pelicans' lead assistant. Reportedly open to college HC jobs per an article at time of the move.

I also like the idea of Russell Turner. UC Irvine has been top 3 in the Big West for 10 straight years and won outright for 5, mostly with his own recruits and few transfers. That super-successful '18-'19 team was almost all his guys. (The only one who wasn't? Our very own Robert Cartwright.) The '20-'21 team was in the dance conversation before the tourney was cancelled, too.

Again, all of this is screaming into the wind as Haase probably has 2 more years here.

RE: New MBB coach? - CompSci87 - 02-20-2022

Given that he's interested in college HC jobs, Jarron Collins would be a great get. He's done very well as a high level NBA assistant. You would see the team running some actual offensive and defensive schemes. And surely he "gets" Stanford.

Please no to Jarron Collins. He has never coached in college and has never recruited. Furthermore he was let go by the Warriors after last season and had to go to the lowly Pelicans. I don't care if he gets Stanford. That is insufficient to get this job.

Agreed. We need someone who has a successful track record as a head coach. Russell Turner strikes me as a solid candidate given his success as a head coach. And, it's a nice bonus that he was an assistant here. I don't know what kind of recruiter he his, but he strikes me as a guy who has some passion to boot. Russell Turner.

not sure what other former players are in the coaching ranks, either as NCAA head coaches or NBA assistants

Others
Wayne Tinkle (tough get, but worth pursuing)
Tommy Amaker

Amaker is a proven coach at Harvard -- and Duke passed on him because Coach K wanted more say from sidelines.
So, pay the money and get Amaker.

And have the NCAA head coaches on the list won?
Or do you propose Stanford hiring an assistant with no head coaching experience?

I realize it's Muir, but don't you want someone who has proven that he or she can run a successful program at college level?

Why would someone with prior success want to come to Stanford?  It has a mediocre, at best, history.  A weak fan base.  And Maples is poor. Palo Alto has about the highest cost of living in the country.

Hope for someone whose young, energetic and rising on the assistant level. Then if he turns things around he’ll move on to greener pastures.

How's Matt Lottich doing at Valpo? Any doubt he'd jump at the chance of being the Stanford head coach?

One coach that I do think would be successful at Stanford is Tony Bennett (Captain Obvious). If he gets tired of UVA, I'd welcome a championship-winning coach.

His defense first, slow down the game would bode well for us and the type of players we can get.

Lottich's record at Valpo is undistinguished.
24-9
15-17
15-18
19-16
10-18
10-11 (so far this year)

Apparently, no one is out of our price range. Considering our football coach.

Offer Tony Bennett 7 million a year.

I follow the Warriors pretty closely and never got the sense that Jarron was "let go." He was a long-time assistant behind a bunch of other assistants (well, Mike Brown for sure and arguably others) and left to seek out opportunities to move up.

In any case, I would hire Jarron in a second! Sure, my dream coach is a successful young HC from a mid-major looking to make a move to a power 5 school like Monty back in the day, but I'm skeptical that we can attract those types of guys these days let alone Muir doing a good job of it. But a young-ish, successful NBA assistant who is an alum and former NBA player could be gold. Think we need to take some chances here, and Jarron ticks a lot of boxes (on paper admittedly since he hasn't been a HC) in terms of recruiting and basketball chops.

He left his heart in San Francisco, so maybe he'll want to come back to California... Ok, wrong Tony but that's all I got.

Yeah, we'd never attract a pretty young coach from mid-major UAB, who successfully took them from meh to the tournament and winning the conference outright in 4 years...oh wait.

You're right that we probably *can* attract some younger, mid-major coaches, but the "let alone Muir doing a good job of it" was a critical qualification. He did choose Haase out of this profile after all. For me, in the off chance that Jarron would want the job, he's a no-brainer. He ran the Warriors defense last season and, after 7 years with that organization, I'd be more than willing to take my chances on his ability to coach an offense with movement and execution (if anyone thinks the Warriors are all about the individual skills of Steph and Klay, etc., they haven't been watching). Recruiting? We would have to see, but as I said he ticks a lot of boxes for recruits as an alum and former NBA player and coach.
