I'm a little suspicious of billionaire priorities that don't involve direct efforts to reduce true human misery that's all too common in much of the world.
Feels to me like Stanford now is better armed to build nicer promenades and make really nice offers to faculty doing similar work elsewhere.

John Doerr was born in St. Louis and went to Chaminade Prep there. I wonder how much (if anything) he's given to St. Louis area charities.

The biggest challenge is this: Stanford doesn't need the money...and yet won't refuse it. It simply goes to broaden Stanford's capital base and plays no real functional part in enhancing the community, the academic standing, or anything else.
I guess I can say "yay" but at the same time ask "for what?" Nicer buildings?

There are much worse things billionaires can do with their money. Stanford should be a leader on this issue, and I'm hopeful that there will be solutions on this issue coming out of Stanford, as it is one of the biggest problems of our time.

I get that Stanford the institution has done many things to make the world better. I've done stories on a bunch of them starting with the press frenzy re Dr. Shumway and a host of science stories with the great Stanford PR Bob Lamar. All grads should be very proud.
However another billion in the coffers seems to make a giant even fatter. A billion dollars to some JC's could go a very long way to modernizing facilities, etc. For example take the nursing program at College of Marin. We don't need more computer geeks but there is a crying need for nurses right now since we've lost many to pandemic fatigue.
On my hill the Pandora guy tried to build a 14 bedroom, 16 bathroom mansion so out of character for the neighborhood that he was stifled (and not by the planning commission). Another techie did a teardown and a rebuild that is just now entering its third year of construction. On a house!
I'm not a backer of socialism but isn't it time to close the wealth gap. Just a little.
Go Gators! We could use a billion.

And on the news this morning. CCSF struggling to stay open, plans a layoff of faculty:
