RE: WGolf @ National Championships - oldalum - 05-21-2022

in the quest for the individual NCAA championship, Zhang leads at -6, followed by two at -2 (one is halfway through her round), and two at -1.

As for the topsy-turvy team performances, I suspect the wind is playing a role.

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - winflop - 05-21-2022

Another good day for the best team in the country. Thankfully that's our team!! They are well-positioned to make match play.
1. Stanford +5
2. Oregon +9
T3. UCLA, Auburn +10
5. LSU +11

On the individual side, Rose Zhang has a four-shot lead but some of the other top players haven't finished. Rachel Heck's even par round looks pretty good as more scores come in. Looks like it was a tough day for everyone. Keep in mind all five are in the top half of a very large field of 128 players. That's a good place to be.
1. Zhang -6
T19. Englemann +3
T29. Heck +4
T41. Krauter +5
T56. Seay +7

I'm excited to see that we get the early tee time which I think is a big advantage. The top 6 teams go off 1 and 10 at 630am. Our last player should be done before the thermometer hits 90.

Also will be interesting to see if Sturdza plays tomorrow. I think Coach Walker will get her in for at least one stroke play round so that she's got a feel for the course if she's needed for match play.

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - M T - 05-21-2022

Looks like Stanford, Oregon, and Auburn start at 6:30AM on Sunday at the first hole.   UCLA, LSU, TxA&M start at the 10th hole at 6:30AM.

Seay, Krauter, Heck, Englemann, Zhang

Looks like only mild winds on Sunday, picking up a little throughout the day. Doesn't get to 90 until 1PM (6 mph), topping out at 95 at 5PM (8 mph). At 6:30AM, it will be low 70s, 4 mph.

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - Jamesy - 05-22-2022

Heck is 3 under through 5! Hopefully she is getting her mojo back. Started on the front 9 too so hopefully can finish strong as well

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - BostonCard - 05-22-2022

Looks like another good day to be a Stanford women golfer.  We are now 20 strokes clear of the ninth place team and seven strokes ahead of second place UCLA, with basically one hole left today.  Zhang is on pace to win the individual title with a five stroke lead over second place Beth Lillie (who plays this afternoon).

FIFY. After 15 holes she was even for the round, and I was thinking it would be nice if she could finish under par, then I thought she's quite capable of getting two birdies in the last 3 holes. She birdied all 3!

Really excellent play by the team today.

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - BostonCard - 05-22-2022

Yeah, great finish by Zhang and the team.  Five under over the final five holes as a team, seven birdies,  three of them by Zhang.

Since the team is playing so well (it looks like we're about 25 shots clear of the cut to make match play on Tuesday), does that change the lineup strategy for tomorrow?  I am specifically wondering about Rachel Heck.  I was worried about her health and whether she was anywhere near 100% based on the first round.  She has obviously played great since then but mono is really tough on a person and there is a lot of golf to play over the next three days.  Any thoughts on giving her a rest day tomorrow so she will be ready for match play on Tuesday?  The answer probably depends on how she is actually feeling and we have no way of knowing her medical details but I wonder if any of the people who follow the team closely have any thoughts.
Having a great time following and getting to know this great team!
Cheers,
Pete F.

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - winflop - 05-22-2022

So far so great!!! What a rally down the stretch to widen the lead even further, both for the team who has a nine-shot lead and for Rose Zhang who now has a seven-shot lead for the individual title.
1. Stanford E
2. Oregon +9
3. Texas A&M +13

The team has had great play to date across the lineup, with everyone shooting +4 at worst which for many teams is their best round. Rachel Heck must be feeling great she's now played three days in a row and finds herself in the top 20 along with Sadie Englemann who is now in the top 10. Three top 10s is very possible tomorrow.
1. Zhang -9
T6. Englemann +1
T11. Heck +2
T39. Krauter +7
T60. Seay +9

Looks like they changed things up and Stanford will tee off last. Gonna be another hot one with a high around 95 but at least the wind won't be howling like it was on Friday.

Genuinely surprised to not see Sturdza in the lineup. I guess Heck is 100% and Coach Walker is sticking with her starting five through match play

No one will play early tomorrow. The field was cut from 24 to 15 teams after today's round. With a smaller field, tee times start at 10 am local time. And because the Golf Channel wants to televise the final groups and presumably the individual champion as they finish their round, Stanford will be in the final groups with Oregon and Texas A&M teeing off starting at 11:55 am. Stanford will be playing in the heat of the day.

Pairings here - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=pairings&tid=24975

Golf Channel coverage of the final round of stroke play starts tomorrow at 1 pm pacific with College Central. Then they will be on the air live from 2 to 6 pm.

Also some historical perspective on the results of the stroke play compared to the match play results.

2015 (the first year for the current format) - Stanford won the NC as the 4th seed (i.e., they finished 4th in the stroke play part of the competition)
2016 - Washington won as the 4th seed
2017 - ASU won as the 3rd seed
2018 - Arizona won as the 8th seed
2019 - Duke won as the 2nd seed
2021 - Mississippi won as the 4th seed

In other words, the team that has won the stroke play has never won the national championship.

so I guess that means Zhang should go for the individual championship and the other 4 players should throw the final round and aim for a team finish no higher than 2nd.

Another first for Stanford to aim for.

Statistically, we should aim for a 4th place finish, since the 4th seed has won it three times so far.

Sounds like championship weather! Go Rose!

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - ColoradoTree - 05-23-2022

Stanford +6 on the day so far, while our playing partners are faring better, with Oregon at even par and A&M -1 on the day. What started as a nine-stroke lead is now three. Englemann is +4 through 7, and that's the score we're dropping right now.

Zhang is +1, but her -8 for the tournament still has her six strokes clear of second (currently a tie between SJSU's Natasha Oon and A&M's Jennie Park).

And the fall continues as Seay bogeys 9 and doubles on 10, Heck then bogeys 9, and Krauter bogeys 10. Stanford is now +10 on the day and +10 for the tournament, and we've gone from a nine-stroke lead to third place, with Oregon (-1 today) in first and TAMU (-4 today) in second. Only one team has a worse score today than ours, and that's UVA's +12.

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - ColoradoTree - 05-23-2022

Zhang bogeys 9 and drops to -7 for the tournament, and she's just four strokes ahead of TAMU's Jennie Park with nine holes to play. Park is on fire, -4 today while Zhang is +2.

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - 2006alum - 05-23-2022

Look at it this way, the number 1 seed is cursed, so we're enhancing our chances at a title!

RE: WGolf @ National Championships - ColoradoTree - 05-23-2022

Zhang bogeys 10 and her individual lead is down to three strokes with 8 to play....

Stanford's +12 is tied for the worst round of the day, so, uh, that's fun.
