The 1996 WBB Olympic team.  Tara, Azzi and Steding

Just finished watching the three episodes - what an amazing behind-the-scenes look at that arduous odyssey to the gold medal. In a review in the Athletic, the director shares: There’s one story that didn’t end up making the film. It was the hardest cut we had to make. It was a story that Tara told us about a year to the date from the Olympic gold-medal game. After she went for a jog, she was in the shower and had a panic attack. She literally had to get out of the shower because she couldn’t breathe. She was worried about, what if I fail my country? What if we don’t pull this off? She wrote on a piece of paper, ‘I am Tara VanDerveer. I am the best coach in the country. We will win gold.’ From that point forward, she said she literally never had a single ounce of doubt. She believed in her philosophy, which was all business.” I wish they had kept that in because the first episode was pretty unflattering of Tara, including the infamous spat over Rebecca Lobo's selection to the team (Tara’s advocacy for bringing Venus Lacy onto the squad is vindicated in the gold medal game). Glad they found the footage to tell the story more fully, all these years later.

I finally found  time to watch and I thought the episodes were great. It was all very insightful and fun to hear the many stories from various individuals including Tara. I agree that Tara is not shown in the best light especially early on in the first episode. She was under tremendous pressure to win and was characterized as only concerned with winning and not caring about any of the players as individual people. Winning was all that mattered and she would go to extreme measures/training to ensure that happened. I don't think that is Tara Vanderveer the coach today. Tara was candid back then and it seemed more media savy. She's a lot more guarded today with reporters and less forthcoming. I'd assume she's changed some from lessons learned coaching that Olympic Team. I'd encourage everyone to watch if they haven't. I

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - 81alum - 06-22-2022

I just watched the 1st episode of "Dream On."  I don't think I agree that Tara was presented in a negative light.  She came across as a tough taskmaster who knew how to push the right buttons to get her team ready.  Her remark that she was no one's friend was revealing.  Clearly she has mellowed over the years, but the young Tara might have been what was needed to forge a team out of a collection of disparate stars.

I'll comment more once I finish the series.

EDIT:

Just finished part 2 and this was much more negative about Tara--particularly Lobo's remarks that she never had a single human conversation with Tara, that Tara was all about winning and nothing at all about relationships with players or the enjoyment of the game.  Pretty strong stuff.  I've heard many times that Tara has mellowed out over the years--maybe this is what those remarks were referencing.

I recall when it was aired that Lobo said something like they weren't (obviously) friends then, but they have since been friends for over 15 years, and that she didn't understand why Tara was like that back then, but does now.

Also interesting to hear Bird and Karlie discuss this in Bird's latest podcast. Neither pretty much experienced the "human" Tara until their junior year.

Just finished the series.  Superbly done, I thought.  The backstories were powerful.  I really did not understand how critical that gold medal was to the creation of the WNBA.  And today's Tara reflecting on yesterday's Tara was quite interesting.

I wonder how much Tara knew about plans for the WNBA when she was named coach for Team USA. Just winning the gold would’ve been pressure enough. Was she so unrelenting knowing what was at stake?

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - BobK - 06-23-2022

I think it’s extremely important to know that Tara was the coach of the 1994 team that didn’t reach the finals in the World Cup or whatever it was called. Lots of pressure on her to win.
All the interviews and advertising so yes they know the nba was starting a womens league. If Tara won

Sad they never mentioned the existing ABL with the Lasers

Thanks, biketoc, for the link - yes, very interesting. They talked about how it was their team that started to loosen up Tara. Sounds like she started to evolve with players (Lili?) starting to leave the program and milestone (win #1000) victories. Hard to imagine the “T-Dawg” moment with the young Tara.

Currently watching episode 3.

I agree I don't think episode 1 portrayed her that poorly.  They lay on the line what was at stake, for the future of the sport and given what the NBA had invested into it.  They made it clearly she could not lose, and made it clear why her focus had to be to win, regardless of whether people liked her or not for it.  And I think they made it clear that while it grated on the team at first, that the players also understood it is what made them great.  It's basically like Herb Brooks and the 1980 hockey team.

But man, episode 2...   I mean, there were 12 players on the team, but let's focus everything on Rebecca Lobo's feel-feels.  Could ESPN make it any more obvious they're in the tank for UConn and how dare you make someone from UConn feel bad!!!!  I mean, Lobo had the least experience on anyone on the team, of course the coach with the future of the sport on the line is going to feel the least confident in her.  Also let's give Geno more screen time than Tara even though one coached the whole goddam thing and one didn't.

Once you get by that, yes, great documentary.  30 of 30 hits way more than it misses.

Geno did not have more screen time than Tara. The Rebecca Lobo spat was newsworthy at the time and should absolutely have been included in this documentary and rightfully was. If there wasn't intrigue and storylines and some drama, a documentary wouldn't be worth watching. Why not highlight those things. They weren't fabricated. It was overall a great documentary and I'm glad I made time to watch.

Slightly different subject but still perhaps worthy of the same header...

As a STH I got an email today saying they were expanding the student section to the whole north end lower sections 14-16. Some folks will have to be moved but will be kept in the lower level.

We sit in the south end. It has always seemed more full than the other side, I presume due to proximity to the bench. So hopefully not a brobdingnagian disruption. I did notice an upsurge in student interest last season so I'm optimistic with a bit of marketing they could expand that presence to fill out the new area.

I know we had lots of attendance when I was a student, but it dwindled to an unnoticeable group in the last decades.

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - bl82 - 07-08-2022

No news on how the frosh look? I can't imagine Betts hasn't created a stir with her play. At the very least, she will transform the offensive games of Cam, Kiki, Ashten and Fran, but I really want to know how we might tweak the offense to make the most of her skill set. Also, you'd think Nivar would be making waves too. I suspect Lepolo might be criminally underrated and as for Papadaki, I think both Greek players have a lot more upside than many suspect.

Enough of my hunches, are there any rumors about the frosh yet?

Other than we know all but Elana on campus now for 2 weeks or more.
Elana playing with a Greek national team
While the SF ProAm is back for the men it’s not for the women sadly. That used to be a great way to check out the Frosh

Greece vs. Albania is on the Fiba youtube page. Albania has a guard from Cal on the team so kind of like Battle of the Bay? They are guarding each other and Bosgana is much better than the Cal guard.

We should talk about Bosgana and how her game might play out for the 2022-2023 season.  After watching a good amount of Greek FIBA games, Elena impressed me as a big, skilled, physical guard who can get into the paint and score with contact.  In limited play last season, it appeared that she was not quite ready for the much-quicker American college game and being defended by more athletic guards.

Sometimes, especially with many of the Euro players, it can take a season or two to adjust and better compete in the States, so if she has worked sufficiently on her game, we might see a lot more of Elena.  More productive playing time fuels greater confidence.  Imagine a 6'2 physical guard with ball skills and the potential to create problems for the opposition.  Assuming she has improved, let's hope Tara will find opportunities to utilize her more as the season unfolds.  It will be interesting to see if Elena's performance can produce dividends for the Cardinal.
