At this point, the only person they have in their fold with the cold blooded killer DNA it will take to navigate this situation and knows the college sports business, is Condi Rice.

Phenomenal idea.

Oh Stanford has people above Bernie capable of making the decision, it just is not likely to be the decision that most would like.  From my view point the University is currently managed by those who don't have a lot of use for sports in a University environment.  I am very concerned on what will happen to our many high level no revenue sports.

I'd prefer if Professor Rice had nothing to do with it.

I’d prefer the current President and provost have nothing to do with it.  I fear the worst on all fronts.

Stanford, so scary that it sends your heart into an abnormal rhythm.

Agree, neither Drell nor Tessier-Lavigne care all that much about football. It’s like having Gerhart Casper as president without Rice to counterbalance his malign indifference.

Network money seems to be the driver for changes in college football conferences. Will there be more money in fewer big conferences for networks to bid on, or independence, handling your own rights?
USC and UCLA were picked for the LA market. The Bay Area is large, but is there a large viewership?
Stanford, and maybe Cal, are top global universities that choose to include athletics as part of a comprehensive and inclusive education. As an independent, they would need to market and stream globally in multiple sports and maybe use NIL to produce and market stories of students and staff.

I just can't imagine the BigTen possibly being content with USC and UCLA on the west coast and no one else, and I have a hard time believing USC or UCLA would, either. I imagine that all parties talked about the expected poaching of other Pac-12 schools as a necessary next step. So in that way I think it was not just the LA market, but the entire west coast. All speculation on my part.

Except multiple sources have said that the Big-Ten is standing pat for any team not named Notre Dame.

Others may be added at some point, but I don’t think that’s the plan.

I think this is probably the case. The only reason to add members would be that they bring in more revenue than you would have to pay out to them. ND would do that. At this point, there is no reason to think any other PAC-12 member is going to meet that standard. The Big-10 is always tweaking their media deals. They know what they can sell. If they could sell Stanford + <somebody> as members for more than it would cost them, they will do it. Right now, that isn't the case. Improbable it will be in the near future IMHO.

Might be some anti-trust concerns as well if the Big 10 gets much bigger?

RE: Poll: What should Bernie do? - fullmetal - 07-02-2022

If the $EC hasn't run afoul of anti-trust issues with TX/OU joining the fold, the Big 10 will be fine.

I hope the Big 10 is just playing coy with negotiating leverage and are secretly waiting to invite Stanford/kal.

I have no idea what Kliavkoff is doing right now, but unless something clever comes along, his options are quite limited.

I highly doubt that Stanford + Cal would increase the value of their deal by over 110 million a year (the value for which the conference would break even), or that Stanford would increase the value of the deal by $60 million or more.  I don’t think Stanford or Cal will be invited on the basis of $$ alone.

Totally agree. It may be that having only two West coast teams in the Big-10 turns out to be untenable and they have to admit more such teams. That is several years away at best, if it even happens. Dollar-wise, it doesn't make sense for the Big-10.

If it's about football and money only, Stanford will not be in the Big 10.  However there might be other considerations.  I have read numerous articles where Big 10 coaches of various sports said Stanford is the gold standard for combining academics and athletics.

WBB, WVB, and some other Stanford sports teams would be desirable members of a conference.

Stanford would substantially increase the number of Big 10 conference Fulbright, Marshall, and Rhodes Scholars not to mention Nobel Prize winners.

The academic track record should be worth at least $250 Million per year to the Big 10.

Since all of this is being driven by Fox and ESPN, the only thing that matters is $$$.  Despite being the epitome of the idea of student-athletes, I would not expect an invite; the veil has been dropped and the only thing that matters is being able to sell ads on TV.
