The obvious advantage for any Power Five team that moves swiftly in canning an under-performing coach this fall: potentially being front of the line for a recharged Bronco Mendenhall. That would be Christmas in September or October or November for any team that moved fast. Or, I suppose, he could wait for the landscape to be clearer. But if Nebraska comes calling, does he turn that down?
Yes, he does turn it down. Nebraska is not a good place to be in the current college football scene but the alums/fans don't get that. While it is true there are worse places to be, Nebraska is IMHO a "too hard to do" case. First tier coaches aren't going there.

I think we can all agree it would be almost unthinkable for some coach to leave one school a month into the season to go coach at another that season. The OP must be talking about being first in line for coaches that are presently unemployed. I just don't see any of these coaches joining in mid-season. I could see it under very exceptional conditions, but if the current coach is being let go for football performance issues, would anybody jump in mid-season that wasn't even at the University previously?

Frankly, I would be more than a bit suspicious of any coach who entertained offers during a football season while he is employed elsewhere. I know the Sonny Dykes of the world do that, but as a University administrator I wouldn't want to hire that type of guy. Coaches need to feel some basic responsibility to their employer and the players. After the season, it is OK to listen. During the season, IMHO, it isn't. You should be 100% focused on your current job.

Is Nebraska any harder to succeed at in major college football than BYU or Virginia? Mendenhall's niche is succeeding at mid-tier major programs. I'm not talking about Jimbo Fisher here. I think the fit could potentially be quite good. I don't think Nebraska is doomed to Frost-like performance any more than Stanford was doomed to Harris-like performance or Virginia was doomed to London-like performance.

Teams can hire people other than current head coaches. I understand your points on responsibility/focus during the season, but if Nebraska comes calling to a major team's coordinator during the season, I suspect the coordinator will listen. Bear in mind that somebody can have conversations about a job without yet leaving the current job. Maybe Nebraska identifies somebody who will join them after the conference championships, or even after the bowls. Dan Lanning kept coaching the Georgia defense weeks after he was hired as Oregon's head coach. This is just the world we're in now. Kirby Smart did the same thing, continuing to coach Alabama even after taking the Georgia job (and those are conference rivals!). Their lack of focus in grasping for the individual brass ring didn't stop them from winning national titles, and their future teams were willing to wait/let them multi-task.

I am definitely not talking about Mendenhall or anybody else joining mid-season. That would be stupid. You fire Frost in October (I guess, given the economics...if I'm Nebraska my mind is made up now that this guy needs to go), appoint an interim head coach to coach the rest of a lost season, conduct a search for however long it takes to find your guy, and lock that guy in as the guy who hits the ground running in December.

At least he criticized "grown men".

Would it have been better if he said: "the players didn't execute"....

I agree that Nebraska can be better than it is under Frost. The problem is that Nebraska isn't at all like BYU or Virginia. They are still thinking Bob Devaney/Tom Osborne like success is what they deserve and expect. Anything less and you will have trouble there. It has been a long, long time since they were that good, but they don't "get" it. Also, BYU and Virginia had an ethos and some attractive points that you could "sell" to recruits. Nebraska is a much harder sell. It is cold in the winter, and there isn't much "there" there. In many ways it is a good school, but that isn't what most football players are looking for. IMHO it is also quite probable Mendenhall is tired of that niche he has occupied and wants to move "up" the food chain, but not to a place where no matter what he does it won't be enough. He doesn't need that aggravation.

I agree that you can have discussions with coordinators, head coaches, whoever you wish. I also agree that lining up a new guy that you are happy with is a good thing. Some "multi-tasking" can be OK, but if the word leaks out too soon, it can get ugly, even if it is a coordinator. OTOH, some head coaches and coordinators have an understanding about "moving up" and actually talk to each other about it. It can work out fine. You really do need to fire Frost first before you do this IMHO.

Agree that is how it should be done. If there is a significant financial advantage to keeping Frost on until the end of the season, maybe you do that. No matter what you do, if Frost isn't "the guy", this will be a "lost" season.

If that is a veiled reference to our guy, he usually says “we didn’t execute”, and there is no evidence that the criticism is specifically to the players, at the notable exclusion of himself.

Onside kicks when up 11 pts sound a little *too* creative if you ask me.  Don't give hope to the opposition.

"Is" in America. Perhaps "are" in England.

ESPN called Nebraska one of the 10 worst teams in the country: https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/34488025/college-football-bottom-10-zeroing-worst-teams-country

Yet again, I'm happy that Stanford is not Nebraska.  Fingers crossed that Stanford's season will end up better than Nebraska's this year.

I thought they’d get the coveted #5 spot.

I wouldn’t be too smug though. I am legit hoping we don’t wind up on the list this year.

I believe there are a couple of denizens of this board who feel we belong there already.

(My God, how bad can you be to lose to Vanderbilt 63-10, though? I thought Hawaii usually came up with at least a halfway decent team.)

Wasn’t Scott Frost involved in the NCAA wrist slap of Bill Walsh?

Hawaii is a complete trainwreck.

They hired Todd Graham 2 years ago, he was an ok coach but was hated by everyone and had zero relationship with Hawaii whatsoever, and players mutinied. 15 players - including at least 9 starters - transferred out this past offseason.

Graham was fired for Timmy Chang, a former Hawaii player and first-time HC whose most recent (and highest level of) experience was WR coach at Colorado State. First-time, not-ready-for-prime-time coach with a brand new system and totally gutted team. They had some guys transfer in, sure, but a bunch were little-used backups from P5s who don't have much actual game experience. There are gigantic growing pains when this type of complete rebuild happens. We're hoping the same is true with USC next week.

ALSO, Vandy's new QB looks to be pretty good, or at least very athletic and a good runner. I bet that didn't show up at all on tape, since he hasn't played.

It was a reasonably close game until Vandy scored 35 unanswered points in the third quarter.
Their new quarterback had quite a day. Over 300 yards total offense, 4TD's running and passing and averaged 12.5 yards per run.
It will be interesting to see how he does against better competition. He had a reasonably impressive offer list with Harvard being one of the schools interested. Wonder if we had any interest?

In a 2020 QB, when we already had Tanner McKee coming back from his mission in the same class?

And Frost’s latest lost was to Helton, who was fired a year ago after losing to Stanford, where Frost started his college career. College football is a small world.

I’m mildly interested in what Frost will do next, or rather what the coaching “fraternity” will do with him. I can’t imagine any P5 school’s fan base reacting well if Frost is named an offensive coordinator, for example.

Will he follow the Helton route and try coaching a team outside the Power 5?
