-- Shaw's overall positive take on the team is not surprising. That's the nature of press-conferences. However, he did not trot out his "tiger in the weeds" statement. That would have been ridiculous.
-- Clearly, we do not have the depth on the O-line that Shaw claimed we had prior to the season. Calling UW's defense "active" is just a way of saying that they beat us at the LOS and disrupted our offense. Gee, that's what defenses do for a living if you let them.
-- His positive view of Filkins and how he can eventually pair up with Smith to form a top-level running back duo is fine, but that assumes they both stay with the program. Our previous running back duo (Jones and Peat) is gone, with both plying their trade for other teams. If Filkins and Smith are both promising, do they stay?
-- The tone was obviously subdued, and Shaw clearly wanted to get the press conference over with as soon as possible. I think we will see a lot of similar pressers this year. I can't imagine the one next week after the Oregon game will be much different. Hope I am wrong, but this is where we are right now.

You are not wrong and this is exactly where Shaw and his program are. And will likely remain.

I think we all agree Shaw is a great representative of the University. Why not kick him upstairs --- give him Muir's job. Shaw as AD would add to everybody's brand.  I'm trying hard to remember an instance where Muir has added value since he was hired.

Hiring Allister for softball is probably the only clearly outstanding he's had. Although Hambly won titles, they were with Dunning's recruits and the team has struggled since they graduated. The other top performing teams have coaches that predated Muir.

"I'm comfortable" defines why Stanford Football has cratered. Shaw has always been more concerned with his own comfort than doing things that are uncomfortable and would allow him to grow.

For those wanting to boot Shaw upstairs to the AD position, I suggest you think again. Has he been a leader? Has he driven his staff to perform? Has he replaced anyone? Give him 36 head coaches to supervise and complacency and comfort will become the norm across all of them.

Some food for thought for those who still defend Shaw:

Geoff Collins has been fired. With Babers off to a 4-0 start, David Shaw is now the losingest Power Five coach in America over the last 3-4 years. Since the beginning of the 2019 season, Babers has a .385 winning percentage, Pat Fitzgerald is .378, and Karl Dorrell and David Shaw are tied for last at .364. Dorrell has only coached 22 games in that stretch compared to Shaw's 33. Shaw is the biggest loser of them all.

According to the 247 Team Talent Composite, here are how these programs rank in talent:

22) Stanford
47) Northwestern
63) Colorado
67) Syracuse

I'm very puzzled anybody thinks this is fixable.

The "Shaw as AD" conjecture is pretty much out the window after giving it thought. The fact that he hires only the people who demonstrate their fealty, acquiescence and the intangible quality of being a "Stanford" type (AKA a "Shaw" type) would pretty much rule out mavericks, anyone who hears a different drum or shows any glint of being original. In other words, willing to speak up and out. Ironically, these qualities always struck me as exactly the kind of student Stanford seeks and accepts. Silly me.

For sure the PAC-12 isn't a "football conference" in anywhere near the sense the SEC and Big-10 are. There is "interest" in football, but nothing like fanaticism. Good or bad, that will make the PAC-12 always worth "less" to the advertisers. That is just a fact.

You're right, the Rose Bowl looks like a ghost town. They got 29k for a home game against South Alabama. That's the result mostly of 8 straight crappy or mediocre seasons.

Then look at resurgent Oregon State's home game against USC over the weekend. Notice not one empty seat, everyone standing, in the student sections and areas behind the team sidelines. Packed like a premier league match in England.

Another example of a loser mentality is downsizing of stadiums. Like Stanford reducing capacity from the previous 85K to 50K. That's what loser programs who downgrade their teams do instead of the harder job of building and maintaining a winning program and putting more fans in seats.

If I may remind the Stanford fans here of something. A football player is on an athletic scholarship not an academic one. They come here to play football. We compete against other Pac-12 programs, Notre Dame, etc., not the Ivy League. There are minimum NCAA academic requirements for eligibility and transfer rules. How about we follow those rules and not try to fight with one arm tied behind our backs.

Maybe because Stanford is primarily a university with a football team, not primarily a football team that is based on a university campus?

Can't get him -- signed a deal through 2028 now at $5M a year, plus a healthy coaching budget. Made playoffs last year.

B.  Why not Dave Clawson at Wake Forest? Turned the program around, and seems to coach up QBs. Solid Offense.
They went 11-3 last year and won the Gator Bowl. Last weekend they nearly upended Playoff Power Clemson in OT.
He is on a multi-year contract, but only at $3.6M. His upside is limited at WF, if he could be lured to the West Coast...
Clawsom was the ACC Coach of the Year last year. Go hire proven talent; that is what we do on the Faculty.
Clawson made a BIG jump on the SI list from #42 to #24 now -- Over D.Shaw, now at #31.

Mason knows the place, and saw glory years with A.Luck., and he became the "Duck Whisperer" for handling Oregon.
When Mason steps up to Head Coach, he gets the full package.

If Stanford is committed to big-time football Clawson would be my choice. Watched Wake go toe to toe with Clemson this weekend. High octanne offense (Hartman more decisive and more mobile than McKee) but also a defense that shows up and brings it. Plus Clawson is a Williams grad the D-III equivalent of Stanford.

I have no problem with your statement. But then we should leave the Pac-12 and form a west coast Ivy League or discontinue the program indefinitely.

Did you see the WF-Clemson game? Clemson has a better defensive front than UW.
