RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Giants - 10-27-2022

I’d take Correa over any of the other shortstops available this off-season. In a perfect world, add Bell and either DeGrom (assuming he opts out of the two remaining years on his contract - a safe assumption, I think) or Severino (if the Yankees decline his option) and SF has completed the luxury aisle of their shopping list.

This assumes Judge returns to the Yanks and Rodon joins Texas to help Bochy compete with the Astros in the AL West.

LOL on Tina. I shot a rehearsal of her act for somebody (Dateline, 20-20?) from below the runway. Right up the whatever. She asked me to move a couple of feet. Politely, she was a good sport. Complied.

Great movie. She would have been justified to shoot him in the Johnson.

Correa (or one of the other SS).  Nimmo (or Reynolds via trade)  At least one SP.  3-4 type.  That’s my big money shopping list. Judge would be fine. But not as the only pick up.

Correa will cost the most of the SS as he’s younger. Plus the best all around SS. He’s brilliant defensively and of course can hit. Crawford would have to move to second. But that’s fine. Estrada to left or becomes super utility.

Bowden suggests $345 over 10 for Correa. Probably about right. I guess we are going to see if the Giants are serious about opening the vault. There returning payroll is about $100 million. Meaning they should have another $100 million plus to play with. NO EXCUSES.

At the risk of this setting up Phogge lol the Johnsons worry me when it comes to spending big. Hope I’m wrong

I remember years ago in Spring Training games when someone came in that was not on the roster Krukow would call him Les Johnson.

I too worry about their willingness to spend.  I think Harmon/Sue Burns was majority owner when they were willing to spend more. When Harmon passed Sue took the shares, then Johnson bought her out.  We shall see. I’m skeptical.

After the season we just experienced, I have no concerns about the spending issue.  They tried the low-cost route and it didn’t work.  It is now time to open the wallet.  Fortunately for the fan base, ownership has the wherewithal to do so.

Don’t know where you get your confidence on this.  But I sure hope you are right.

Verlander. Another WS failure.  0-6 with ERA of almost 6 coming in.  Can’t hold 5 run lead. Teams were 589-19 in post season history prior to tonight. Wheeler tomorrow. All pressure on Astros. Phillies are playing with house money. Plus the Dusty factor adds to the pressure on the Astros.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 10-28-2022

Dominguez was throwing 93mph sliders. Yikes!

And I just read the last time a team blew a five run lead in a World Series game was 2002. Of course we all remember that one. Game six. Dusty.  Russ Ortiz.  Felix Rodriguez.  Scott Spezio.  Ugh.

Castellanos saved the game for Philadelphia.  A below average OF makes the defensive play of the night - you just never know……

Must have been the dreaded third time through the line-up (Nb I didn’t watch the game).

Castellanos was the Free Agent signing I most wanted the Giants to make after they signed Rodon. He didn't have as good of a season numbers wise as I would have expected, but he did end up .263/.305/.389, which - pathetically - would have produced the highest BA, OBP, and OPS of any qualified Giants player. Estrada was .260 BA, .302 OBP and led the qualified Giants with a .402 SLG.  Could the Giants have used another Thairo Estrada, given he was their most consistent performer, even though those numbers are terrible for a MLB team leader? Yes, they could have.

Speaking of qualified players, was listening to Michael Kay Show podcast about Yankees, Judge, deGrom, and Jeff Passan was on. They were talking about if the Mets would rather have Diaz or deGrom, and Passan went on to address how relievers aren't nearly as valuable as starting pitchers.  He used the Phillies as an example.  He said the teams that win have great starting pitching and position players who play every day, are the ones who win and that's what the Phillies have. So too did the Mets and Braves. They don't have a dominant closer. But they do have Nola and Wheeler, and they do have Harper, Hoskins, Bohm, Segura, Castellanos, and Realmuto, even Schwarber, who play EVERY DAY.

IOW, platooning does not work.  MAYBE pinch hitting situationally will work, like it did for the Giants in 2021, but did that really even work? They won 107 games, but lost to a team in DS that lost to a team in CS that had an every day lineup in the playoffs and won the WS, which is what matters most.  I mean would you rather have your 87 win team in the World Series up 1-0, or your 107 win team eliminated in the DS?

Maybe Farhan has done all he can on the cheap, ownership doesn't want to be irrelevant with the Dodgers and Padres in the division, and the rumors of Giants making some big signings this off season aren't just rumors but precursors. It would make sense. Maybe the fact he brought in a GM from the Astros who also play a set lineup as much as possible, is a tell.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 10-29-2022

For awhile Casey platooned. Gradually he shifted. Won both ways but in general a set lineup usually wins a pennant. Finally he was able to play both Howard and Berra together and Maris replaced Bauer in right. Skowren played most every day and he was blessed with six right hand hitting infielders who could interchange and Lumpe who hit LH. Of course Mantle was a platoon playing switch hitter.

Crawford should study Tucker from the Astros. Compact swing with power. Crawford is too big, too slow. And now probably too old. If they get Correa he’s got to play short and Crawford needs to be broad minded.

Second time through. He was as perfect through 3. Then fell apart. Poor performance from the expected CY winner.  But he has Kate to console him…..

Zaidi has as much as admitted that they can’t continue to platoon at the level they did in ‘22. I think Giant has it right - platoon at DH and one OF spot. ( Yaz/ Slater) at most one more position (2B - Crawford/Estrada after they sign Correa…).

Didn’t want Castellanos. He can hit. But he’s one of the worst outfielders in baseball.  He’s a DH.  Only in OF cause of Harper’s injury.  Making his two game saving postseason catches even more remarkable.  I wanted Marte or Suzuki or Story.  I’ll get over it real fast if the Giants sign Correa or Turner or Swanson plus Nimmo/Reynolds (trade) and a starting pitcher.

Pens are obviously crucial in today’s game. But they are, for the most part, a crapshoot. Relief pitchers are consistently inconsistent. I think a lot of it has to do with the wear and tear on their arms; since today most of them go out throw 95 to 100 every freaking day they have a limited shelf life.  Plus more and more if you guys learn a new pitch which turns your career around out of the pen – at least for a short period of time. Hell, even Josh Hader had two months this year where he was absolutely awful. Course Melvin still should’ve brought him in to face Harper but that’s another story.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 10-29-2022

100mph is great but you do need a guy like Presley. Overhand curve, slider, sneaky fast.

Imagine Rodon as a closer. Two pitch guy, one inning. Unhittable. Won't do it. It would all depend on daily recovery and a starter's salary.

Dominguez reminds me of Doval. But Doval has two fastballs and the slider. Signs of maturity in the second half.

Compelling game last night. Realmuto is the Realdeal. Still not convinced that he didn't nail Altuve.

The Altuve call could have gone either way.  Regardless, whatever call that was made on the field should stand because it was too close to overturn.  Well done, MLB for sticking to the ump’s call.

Also, a rare but great call on the denial of the attempted HBP.

It was a good game.  As I was watching, I was thinking about the rule changes that are coming next year.  I think batters are going to have a hard time getting used to the idea that they cannot step out of the box after (seemingly) every pitch.

Harry Wendlestadt…..

I also think the changes are going to have an impact on pitchers and their ability to fire 100 mile fastball after 100 mile fastball. You have to work faster you don’t get as much of a breather between pitches.
