Used to chat with him at the Niners press lunch. He had an incredible streak of Rose Bowl attendance and was voted into the RB HOF. Last saw him in '19. UCLA grad, still had his wits.
Update: Still has an online column and Wiki says he is a contributor to The Athletic. Hope he can still make Augusta.
I really hate to see the old boys fading away, but, ask not for whom the bell tolls, right?
I just got off the weekly NFL Films Zoom. There are a couple of new cameramen who are young enough to be my grandsons.
You have Niners-Rams?

Don’t know if you saw the announcement hidden in his podcast, but Troy Clardy is calling the Ninera Rams on the radio!

Regarding the original topic of this thread (Chron's lack of Stanford coverage), their dedicated coverage of Stanford ended when Tom FitzGerald left about 3 years ago. Same with Cal coverage, although I can't remember who the beat writer was in that case.
The Chron sports section now focuses on whatever SF pro team is in season (Niners, Giants, Warriors), to the exclusion of almost everything else. So it goes.
Back in the day, I relied on the Sunday paper to catch up on all the sports that had happened the day before. I also counted on the pink pages to alert me to anything happening with regard to entertainment. No more.
I still have a print subscription to the Chron, and a digital one to the Merc that comes with a Sunday print edition.
Print subscriptions will go the way of the dinosaur soon, and many daily papers are likely to fold. Thanks to chrisk for alerting us to the circulation numbers.
We sports fans are fortunate. In the modern world we have the obvious alternative of message boards and podcasts that provide a depth of coverage that we couldn't dream of back in the day, not to mention the plethora of video clips online so that we can catch every play.
There are other costs, however, in terms of less coverage of things like local government. Not a terrible problem in large urban areas, but a bigger issue in smaller cities. Not clear how all that shakes out. Onward.

Clardy is not doing the local radio broadcast. He has been working for the Compass Media Networks, which is broadcasting the 49ers-Rams as its national NFL game of the week.
