There are only a handful of players on the team currently that I would be sad (from a football standpoint) if they transferred. But, as BC implied, most of the players that we currently have (and, probably, most historically) come for the Stanford degree, so are loathe to transfer pre-diploma. The more that do transfer pre-degree, the greater the indictment on Stanford, Shaw, and Muir (who I don't think is getting enough blame). Were Peat and Jones the first players to transfer pre-diploma?

There was Reilly Gibbons a few years ago. Not sure if he ever started in class before he left though.

And then freshman RB Arlen Harris Jr. this year, right when we would have needed him.

Until Jones and Peat there were only 2: Gibbons (who indeed didn't even start class) and then Sione Lund, both of whom transferred due to homesickness/mental health issues. There was no sinking ship to flee back then.

Over the years I’m sure other football players have also transferred before getting a degree. One I recall is Padric Scott.

Do I recall correctly that there was a big time recruit from Montana who transferred after 1 year? I think his father participated in TOS.

From what I heard, Padric was a true Renaissance man and football was just one of the many things he wanted to do at Stanford. When his coaches wanted him to spend more time on football and less on other pursuits, he rebelled. Plus the fact he got a little homesick for Tallahassee. He sort of fits the profile of "smart kids who happen to play football".

Thank goodness Bowlsby took action and got us Harbaugh. No coach was ever a bigger a-hole than Walt Harris. My gosh I hate that blame-the-players, mock-the-players, assign-more-bearcrawls, punt-on-third-down loser.

I met coach harris early on. One of the singularly least pleasant encounters I've ever had with a man. Very rude to the point of anti-social.

The players don’t detail out their hate in manifestos like many seasoned Card fans here do but I promise he’s at best unloved and at worst hated with a passion. Talked to quite a few about their stance, not a pleasant word besides how well he’d done before they arrived.

I would be surprised. I don't think Shaw is nearly as unpopular with his players as he is on this board.
Of course, that's just a WAG too.

Stanford should be looking for football players who happen to be very smart. Not the other way around, which is big reason how Shaw lost his way. That and letting his staff go to seed and failing to develop the players he got.

Thanks for the insight. If you talk to them again, please encourage them to go to Muir before they just quit on Stanford and enter the portal. Their words will carry weight

It all begins with this failing: the deterioration of the coaching staff.  Everything else follows from this: subpar recruiting, poor player development, inadequate S&C (and the attendant injuries), low morale, lack of discipline, etc.  And the Ls pile up on top.

It is a given, absolutely. It's all about the HC. Shaw is the wrong guy at the wrong time -- and has been for several years. This board quibbles with how long this has been been the case but the issue is simply that he is conspicuously, embarrassingly past his expiration date. That he is still in charge is, to say the least, problematic.
