The Ducks have a kid coming in who is ranked as one of the top five HS QB's in the nation.
So I suspect Butterfield saw the handwriting on the wall about getting playing time in Eugene.
Also, Bo Nix has another year of eligibility if he wants to use it. He says he hasn't made up his mind yet.

Here's what I see so far primarily from this thread:

NFL Draft: Kelly, McKee
Grad transfer: Archer, Sanborn, McGill, Bowman, Herron, Hornibrook
Non-grad transfer: Harris

Only one that concerns me is Harris. I don't get worked up by players entering the draft or grad transferring.

What gets me worked up is that Bernie still doesn't have a plan for bringing players IN from the portal

I have read Harris went home after the ND game. Maybe not true but he tried to enter the portal then.

Yep. Fiddling while Rome burns…. With no coach in sight, expect more than usual hitting the portal. New HC is certainly going to get chance to rebuild. Patience from all concerned will be needed.

But if they don’t rectify the one way door sit - well, good luck to the HC. He will need it.

No point redshirting except because of injury. With Lance probably gone the LDS pipeline should dry up. No more waiting around for a kid for two years.

Anybody ever figure out just what the deal with Harris was? I get the feeling he decided the whole Stanford experience just wasn't for him.

A one way door is one thing, but doing everything in your power to set up an industrial strength wind machine directly facing the exit door is another. Stanford fans, coaches, and administrators are way too blithe about guys leaving for the NFL or after graduating from Stanford. In fact, it's worse than that - we seem to actively encourage it. I get it, it's high-minded and makes us feel honorable to be doing college football for the right reasons. But it's the most extreme unilateral disarmament Stanford has seen in decades, even more damaging than not filling the full 85 scholarships or not offering spring official visits or not offering early enrollment. What it means in practice is that Stanford loses massive amounts of prime eligibility for its best players, in contrast to how Stanford operated for 40 years before Shaw and how college football teams continue to operate (or at least try to operate amidst the headwinds of the transfer portal).

It may not bother some of you that Stanford football players leave at the first opportunity, but it kills the football program. One of the most important jobs of the next coach is to create a new culture where players are at Stanford to play football and want to stay to build something with their brothers, rather than bolting for the first paycheck (even if it's a 5th round draft pick or worse as it usually is with our guys) or darting for greener pastures to see what life is like in other programs.

Guess we will see what Muir can find, but the portal activity was going to be in the mix. The sad reality is the new coach will not be able to use the portal as a turnaround tool like other new FBS coaches. The new coach will really need to love the idea of coaching at Stanford because portal attrition will be significant pre-hire, it will be significant post announcement, and it will not be offset by incoming transfers.

For example the current USC roster is loaded with players that were not at USC last year. That type of quick transformation will not be possible at Stanford. And given that, I anticipate a Haase-like 7-10 year plan may be seen as necessary and acceptable by Muir for the next football coach. :(

How's that 7-10 year plan looking?
Recruiting has been good to great, so kudos there.
But of the 6 completed seasons so far, seems like season 2 was the best, and last year one of the worst, so not sure how much progress can be claimed.

Salim Turner-Muhammad and Drake Metcalf have entered the portal.

Metcalf graduated in 3 years (!!!) and has 3 more years of eligibility (!!!). Guys have been loading up on classes so they can GTFO ASAP with degree in hand.

If all our football players are carrying 21 unit loads all year, that would be a good explanation for why we suck so bad on the field.

Well, it might. However, you must remember that the number of hours that a coach can require of a player is now controlled by the NCAA, and exceeding it brings punishment, as our softball coach found out the hard way. Also, football players are on campus for the summer, which reduces the number of units they need to take each quarter, 4 quarters instead of 3 per year. On top of that, with the AP credits many of them have coming in getting to 180 isn't very hard.

I do think there is plenty of reason to examine the number of hours a player puts into their sport per season now vs ten years ago, and that might be very interesting. But it isn't because they take 21 units per quarter.

Matt, I think ship has sailed. I too pine for an era when playing football was less transactional, when guys played for one another and for the joy of the sport, not to best position themselves for the NFL or for the transfer portal. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely support having players who instill a culture that you stay at the school out of loyalty for one another and put the team in front of individual goals, and, institutionally, I've said several times that the biggest thing we can be doing (more so than NILs or transfer portals) is to plan for and enable graduate studies among our own student athletes. I think that's something that can easily be sold to the powers that be, to not only be able to say that we have very high graduation rates, but that a substantial proportion of our student athletes graduate with a master's degree or a second undergraduate degree.

But I am also a realist, and as it has become increasingly obvious that the NCAA, the schools, the coaches, and even many fans view student athletes as an expendable means to an end (winning football games and drawing in money from TV), and increasingly view players throughout the college football landscape prioritize advancing their own aims rather than the teams, it is really hard to blame our guys for doing what, basically, everyone else is doing. When everyone else is looking out only for themselves, it is hard to expect our guys to look out for the team at the expense of their own ambitions.

Last year, we had ten players enter the transfer portal. (This does not count Justus Woods or Joshua Pakola, neither of whom were on the team at the end of last season.)

Two of those ten were walk-on contributors (Kyle Petrucci and Trey LaBounty) and two were juniors (Austin Jones and Nathaniel Peat). Three were fifth year players (Gabe Reid, Houston Heimuli, Ryan Johnson). Two were seniors (Andres Fox and Loa Kafusi; the latter ended up retiring from football). One of the ten (Thunder Keck) decided to return.

In other words, I think that this year continues a trend we've already seen.

McNamara to Iowa. The Boise QB has a brother WR who will (maybe) be at Stanford next season.

And potential recruit Austin Mack leads Folsom against DeLa Salle in a NorCal final this weekend. Can Roman lasso him?

Mack looks to be really good. De La an enigma the last two years. A QB that can't throw and a couple of starters on the line that look to be under 5'8". . . .
