No argument here but there are already more good academically-qualified QBs in the portal.

Hank Bachmeier, Boise State
Hudson Card, Texas

I don't blame McKee for trying to go to NFL now.
He'll be age 23 before next season.
Unlikely his draft prospects would improve by staying in college yet one more season.

Card is the obvious choice. Is it even a debate? Drop all the NIL money on him. Go Card!

Card certainly is the obvious choice but he's also the obvious choice for Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Kentucky, TCU, etc.

And it underscores Jon Wilner's brutal observation in Troy Clardy's excellent podcast, in which Wilner observed that Stanford football has now come "full circle" since the end of the 2006 season. Thing is, Bob Bowlsby is long gone, and football is now being shepherded by...Bernard Muir.

I wish to hell that it WAS the end of the 2006 season right now. Yikes.

Let's wait to see who Muir hires and what happens with transfer portal, NIL, conference realignment, and tv deal. I'm inclined to think that Stanford football's future is brighter than it looked in 2006. That's not to say we'll replicate or even come close to the Harbaugh miracle. That's exceedingly unlikely. But just in terms of where the program is in talent, mojo, institutional support, etc., we face a daunting task for the next coach but I feel more optimistic about it than I did at the tail end of the Harris era. For one, we've now seen what Stanford football can do with great leadership. Don't despair yet.

Fair comment. My position is, however, is not "faith-based". I am far more of a man of hope -- because hope does not disappoint (Romans 5:5).  :)    Faith is belief in something in the absence of evidence. Hope is, well, hope. I see no evidence that Muir is anything more than a politically accomplished, senior administrative cog sans a financial gene, with no domain expertise in big-time football -- especially when it comes to navigating the rough waters in the new big-time era or even any real recognition of the implications for Stanford. Still, I respect your faith. I just don't share it. I see Bernie flailing and Stanford failing. But I have hope for success and wish him fair winds and following seas.

Don't do that. He has the helm at this point and the following seas play hob with one's ability to steer a straight course.

Thanks Herman Melville.

I'm sure he's a good football player and student, but I'm not thinking beyond the play on words. I would love to see Card leading the Cardinal to victory, or a million other tongue-twisters.

For some reason, we didn't even offer him out of HS in 2020, even though he made the Academic All-State list (and now made the Academic All-Big 12 First Team).  We had Patu enrolling early in Spring 2021, and I guess that was enough for us?

That said, I'm not as down on Patu as some are.  I'm keeping an open mind because we really haven't seen him yet. He was listed as a dual-threat guy, which most of us favor for the college game.  I don't think it signals much that Daniels played this season and Patu didn't.  Patu was always listed second on the depth chart, for whatever it's worth, but McKee was healthy enough to play every down (somewhat amazingly considering the beating he took in games like UW).

Regardless, we do want to take a QB from the portal if one is available to us - for sure.

McKee was our QB for 2020, which people seem to continue to forget.

Time for a rhumb and Coke.

I actually thought of him, but for some reason I thought he was on campus in Spring 2020 and that threw me off by a year.

In any case, the point remains the same - limiting to no more than one scholarship QB per year, for the most important position on the field and in the age of college football free agency, is not going to cut it.  And zero, as the Class of 2023 currently lines up, is insanely weak.

But I understand that two 4*/5*'s in the same class is probably asking too much.

McNamara to Iowa.
