I hope he puts some more thought into what sort of academic courses he will pursue. Specifically, I would steer him away from Philosophy -- as this discipline tends to result in a lot of time thinking deep inside his head about the nature of many abstract things. It could easily be counterproductive. While I'm in favor of deep contemplation, rumination, logic and rhetoric, this reeks too much of hoping to find the answers to his many questions in a lecture or a book -- or maybe that's just the 19-year-old me projecting.
Maybe some sort of blend of a liberal arts education and something more practical and less fuzzy would better serve him in his current situation. The answers are out there, but some of the rabbit holes are long, deep and not ideal for a young guy trying to get his life back on track.
Hopefully he gets some good academic advice on what to pursue.
