Please keep it up. It used to be we could read previews and postgame reports from the press, but they seem to have lost that. So what you’re doing is awesome! I don’t post much but do read everything Stanford Women’s Basketball!
I agree about the keep it up -- yes, definitely, and I really appreciate all who do such great pre- and post-game analysis. I always read them. And yes, you're right about most of the press. But the fact is that this year, for the first time in many years, the SF Chron is doing a pretty good job on previews and postgame reports for WBB. Most of these get posted on the Fastbreak Club website, and several of us are also posting them on the Cardboard.

Cal played a lot better in the 3rd quarter but Stanford still outscored them by 2.

One slight problem. By my count four turnovers have been on dumb mistakes. Three travels and now one carry.

Great win before the break. Nice crowd for a 12pm start two days before Christmas. Our offense was good throughout. Cal kinda hung around but never really threatened. Overall, happy with the win. Hope the team enjoys some time away from basketball for the holidays. Go Card.

I was delighted that the attendance was as good as it was -- I was expecting to walk into a nearly empty Mapes, and it was far from that. As for the game, not a lot of drama, and everyone on the team got into the game. Haley had one of her better games of the season. Betts continued to dribble before shooting, thought she was getting better about that, but not today. Fran was looking good. Team really dominated rebounds once again, and until late in the game, a great job of shutting Curry down. Hannah got her stroke back, mostly in the 2nd half. Overall, a pretty satisfactory win. One interesting aspect, until late in the game Tara kept at least one starter, sometimes two, on the floor at all times. Sometimes that was Haley, other times Talana or Hannah. If I recall correctly, it wasn't until halfway through the 4th quarter that we had five non-starters on the floor at once. And this was in the context of doing a lot of substituting, which began mid-1st quarter.

A strong win. 10 players got into double digit minutes, with another 2 at 9 minutes. The longest bench we have uses in many games.
Performances:
This one was Jones's win. Remember a month ago when we wondered if she was in a slump? Today she played like an All American. She led the team in points, in assists, and in rebounds, and was efficient with 10/14 shooting. Better yet, she was smiling and almost skipping around the floor as she led her team to a dominant win.
Among the other starters, it is noteworthy that Jump was Jump again, going 5/9 from three point range and adding a couple of assists.
Lepolo did not need to score since Cal wisely decided to defend her. Even so she got loose into lanes twice and took it to the hoop. Three assists to three turnovers won't pop off the page, but she also got the assignment to begin the defense on Curry, Cal's best scorer. Curry did get 20 points, but had to work for them at 6/18.
Brink got herself into foul trouble in the first half, and by the second half she was not really needed, so she would up with only 17 minutes. But she did stuff the stat sheet in those 17 minutes, going 5/7 with a couple of assists and a couple of blocks.
Iriafen is the unsung hero, with Jones and Brink getting most of the publicity. But she is a superior "big" to many starters we have had in the post-Ogwumike era. She was an efficient 3/5 with 7 rebounds in just 15 minutes.
From the bench, Betts and Bosgana did the most to distinguish themselves. Betts was awkward at first but settle down and went 4/7 in barely 10 minutes. Bosgana had a trey and a poke-steal for a layup at the other end, showing her quickness, speed, and versatility.
I also thought I would acknowledge that walk-on Lauren Green, in only 2 minutes of play, played highly energetic defense. Coming at the end of the game her energy level really stood out to me.
Nivar and Harriel got some minutes but did not really stand out. Neither scored, both fouled, Nivar did have a few assists which was good. I get the feeling they need more extended minutes in support of the first team before we can really see how they are turning out as players. Nivar got beaten a couple of times on defense--but then again the Cal guards did that to a lot of players.
Team Stats
As with Creighton, we nearly doubled Cal's rebounding--48 to 25. We DID double their O-boards 16 to 8.
Our turnovers were more or less average for us at 13, but fortunately we got Cal's up to 10. We had 6 steals today--perhaps a sign that Tara's desire for a more aggressive defense is finally soaking in.
Perhaps the best indicator of success this game is that we shot 53%, and held Cal to 39%. That is a deep disparity that summarizes both our offensive and defensive success.
Conclusion:
Of course there are lots of things to work on, most notably continuing the good trends begun by Brink in staying out of foul trouble and Lepolo in scoring, and settling on a reliable rotation, but 2022 comes to a close with our team looking very strong, uninjured, and with oodles of talent still to be developed. Pac 12 season and tournament season promise to make for a spectacular Spring for Stanford WBB.

Asked about Lepolo. "Talana is amazing, we have never asked our point guard to have the toughest defensive assignment. We never did that with Kiana, we've rarely done that. I think she is really special." On the other hand, "I said to Talana, that the "T" is not for turnover."
Asked about Jones's turnovers. "Haley is a great, great passer. She makes lots of great things happen. I just need her to make less happen."
Asked about Bett's production. "She is instant offense." "This was more of a traditional post game, and I thought Lauren did really well....She is a very special player and she is very hard to guard....It is just a matter of her understanding what we do and her developing."

The game was a blowout that was not as close as the final score. Cal kept their main rotation in while we played the bench a lot in the second half. Curry is very good but she scored most of her points towards the end of the game, not when it mattered. Cal is improved but not nearly up with the top of the conference. They should win more games than last season, and they have struggling ASU to maybe pick on to get some early momentum.
Nice to see the subs get in and generally do pretty well. Jones continues her good play of late. Not really much to say. I don't think that was close to an A game. It was too sloppy at times, lots of passes that were just a bit too high or too hard and other avoidable turnovers. Rotation still in flux. Nice way to head into the holiday break. I hope any players who are flying get where they are going. Lots of disruption in flights due to weather around the country.

One fun aspect of this game was seeing the "Funky Four" - seniors Ashten, Fran, Haley & Hannah - on the court together for a short time at the end of the first quarter. I don't recall seeing that yet this season and don't really expect to see it much again. But it was fun while it lasted and, along with Agnes, they looked good.

Can anyone explained what happened on the bloody play w Luther Schipholt? I was listening to the audio and it went out briefly but I heard something about a bloody gash on her arm. Thx!

Thx!At the game I could not see what happened, but after the play the referee held up play for a bit while she directed the Stanford trainer with a towel to various spots on the floor to wipe down. It seemed more extensive and in widely dispersed places than these things usually are. I could not figure it out since some of the places were not in the area that people went to the floor. Now it begins to make some sense if there were blood drips.

On the video you could see there was quite a bit of bleeding and she clamped her hand over it after getting up, to stop it from dripping any more.
I'm not sure exactly how it happened. Maybe she landed on the elbow when falling and just scraped it on the floor.
It was good to see she was able to come back in and play later.

If I missed it earlier in this thread, I apologize.
One thing Tara said in the post-game talk was that conference dictated that each team play its rival before the holiday break. It felt as if Tara felt she had to apologize for scheduling a Cal game on Dec. 23.
As stated earlier, the game was pretty well attended (almost 4000) for a workday noon game (it was a workday according to my employer) when people had other things they could/should be doing (last minute shopping).

I looked to get seats for my Cardinal W Pass and found the available tickets for future games were pretty poor. I thought that must mean that the upper sideline seats had sold out. Not so. There are lots of seats left. I did note that the currently available seats do not include the topmost rows on the sidelines. (I like the bird's eye view, and I can sit more than 6' away from other fans.)
