I want to see her get the halftime double double.

BC

51-34 at the half.  Brink is a point away from a triple double.  Jump has 5 threes and 17 points.

On a pace to hit 100. Let’s see if the bench can pull it off.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Arizona State New Year's Eve 6pm - martyup - 12-31-2022

Fantastic first half of basketball by Stanford.  Solid shooting and solid defense.

I don't like 9 turnovers, but I do like 9 assists.  The turnovers were mostly trying to get the ball into the post.

Have we ever seen Brink play 19 minutes and have zero fouls?  She is owning the paint.

If Tara leaves her in, Hannah has a real chance at breaking the single game 3 point basket record.

We are even making 83.3% of our free throws.

25 minutes for Brink

Will Tara pull her at her first foul?

She got her first foul at 27 minutes.  Tara did not pull her.

What a fun game where everyone played well! Lots of contributions from many. Betts and Nivar get extended time. We played in transition more, shot the ball well. It was enjoyable to watch. Monday will be more of a challenge.

They said that this was the first time since 2011 that we scored in triple digits in a Pac-12 conference game.

Cool stat. I was wondering how long it had been. I couldn't remember the last time.

RE: WBB: Stanford 101 - ASU 69 - chimera - 12-31-2022

If I had to nitpick I would say defense could have been better and too many turnovers, but overall can't complain.  Offense was fantastic with many contributing.  They will need to play better defense against UA on Monday.  Speaking of which, Cal is within 1 of UA with a minute and change to go...

RE: WBB: Stanford 101 - ASU 69 - 81alum - 12-31-2022

Attendance at 2810 was not as horrible as I expected.  There were even a few dozen at the chalk talk, where we learned that Emma-Nnopu would not dress due to concussion protocol, but would be back reasonably soon.  And today was apparently Brink's 21st birthday!  A nice present for her!

Let's give a little credit to Arizona State, playing with 9 players.  And a shout-out to their Tyi Skinner, the 5'5" (generously) transfer who came in with the new coach.  Lepolo was all over her and even so she scored 20 points and was 4/8 from three.  Those makes were usually well defended--she knew how to shoot with a hand in her face.  Quite amazing for someone that short.

And let's also give credit to Lepolo!  Not only did she have the main defensive assignment, she scored 10 points of her own to go along with 4 assists and 2 turnovers.  Just an outstanding game for her.

Jump was 6/10 from three point range, so a ways off of her record which is 8 or the Stanford record which is 9.  I think what was impressive about tonight, though, was the confidence and quickness of those shots.  She played 23 minutes and if she had been in the full 40 the record would have fallen.

Brink with only 1 personal foul.  Brilliant!  In the chalk-talk we were told that ASU leads the country in getting fouls called on its opponents, and it was a point of emphasis in practice.  It worked.  If she can keep this form for the rest of the year, then the sky is the limit.

Jones continues to play with joy and when she does, many good things happen.

Betts showed us what she can do.  An old-school center--you are not going to see her taking treys, but if she gets the ball close to the basket, it is close to automatic.  5/7.  Depending on match ups, I think we can expect to see her more and more as the year goes on.

Iriafen--she had a bit of foul trouble and uncharacteristically missed a lot of free throws, and those things dampened her performance.  I am still a big fan--but she did not really get into the flow of the game tonight.

Nivar's 18 minutes was the most minutes I think for her this year?  When she first came in she repeated exactly the same mistake she made last game--trying too hard to make something happen and generating an instant turnover.  And a couple of her drives seemed also as if she was trying too hard.  But she settled in and began to show off her skill set which is considerable.  She is very fast, she made 4/5 free throws, and she will continue to improve as she gets more minutes, settles down into the system, and gains confidence.

All in all, a really good offensive game, but I agree with Chimera that the defense was not consistent.  There have been years in which we have been a superb defensive team and merely a good offensive team.  This is not that kind of team.  We can be superb offensively, but there is some room for improvement on defense.  In the meantime, this kind of team is far more fun to watch!

Wasn't able to watch the game due to New Year's Eve Dinner conflict, but from stat sheet, looks like a good solid win. Wish i could have been there, but will be on Monday Looking forward to more of this team. So glad to see a solid wine against a weaker team in the pad -12.

Article about the game in the SF Chron e-edition, should not be behind a paywall. Opens with a wonderful picture of Hannah, Cam, Haley on the bench enjoying watching their subs play

What stood out most for me from the presser was Tara's praise of Nivar.  I think we are going to start seeing more of her.

RE: WBB: Stanford 101 - ASU 69 - M T - 01-01-2023

I was surprised when I calculated that the starters played 62.5% of the game.  It felt less, but maybe it was Brink's extra time that I didn't think about.  (For comparison, ASU starters played 75%)

Unfortunately, the starters committed 73.3% (11/15) of the turnovers, more than their fair share.

When comparing statistics, remember that Stanford has more games than anyone else.
At mid-week, Stanford will have played 2 more games than Arizona. ASU, Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, USC, Utah, UConn, South Carolina, Indiana, NC State, Virginia Tech, LSU
3 more than Washington, Notre Dame
1 more than Colorado, UCLA, Ohio State
(That's the PAC-12 and Top 10)

That's because we're taller.

Oops, no "e"...
Nope, I wasn't talking about our long bench.
I've just realized that my Mac uses the infamous butterfly keyboard, which doesn't have long legs.  I've lost the use of two keys (down & left arrow) and other keys are sometimes not registering...

Wow, thanks for that link.  I use a 2018 MacBook Pro.  I was unaware of the class action.  I have also had issues with my keyboard.  My "i" key sometimes doesn't register when I hit it, requiring me to go back and correct frequently.  t's pretty frustratng.
