TOS is no joke. I have a family member with TOS and she is in chronic/severe pain because of it (despite multiple surgeries). That explains Heck's decrease in form much more so than the mono. Heck's one of my favorite all-time Stanford athletes. I'm hoping for as good of a recovery as possible - at least to manage the pain (whether she returns to competitive golf or not).

The women play in a 2 day, 54 hole tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the Meadow Club in Marin. 36 holes Monday, 18 holes Tuesday.
It's not a great field. The main competition will probably come from #7 San Jose State and #12 USC. No other top 25 teams in the field.

Stanford's line up will be the same as for the Palos Verdes tournament in February - Zhang, Ganne, Englemann, Xu, Ye. Sturdza, Becht and Lu will be playing as individuals. So basically, Stanford's entire roster will be playing except for Seay and Heck. The P12 championship is in 6 weeks and Seay still has not been able to get back in action. Her concussion must have been severe.

Stanford is tied for 1st midway through the 1st round, but play is suspended. Per the report from the course, "The rain is coming down in buckets now."

Good thing play is suspended. You could really get hurt by a bucket landing on your head. The ground crew will have a lot of work picking them up and smoothing out the dents they cause too.

Congrats to the women's golf team for winning the Julie Inkster Meadow Club tournament! Stanford was tied with USC late in the round but pulled away with solid play to win by 5. Rose Zhang led the charge with a bogey free round of 67, including birdies on 15, 16 and 18, to vault her to another individual championship.
Zhang got help from Sadie Englemann who finished 3rd overall and Megha Ganne who was 9th. Angelina Ye was 27th and Kelly Xu was 34th.
If Brooke Seay returns, this could be a solid NC contender even without Rachel Heck. But I think they need that 4th reliable scorer behind Zhang, Englemann and Ganne.
The next action for the team will be in Hawaii at the end of the month. But Stanford will be sending only individuals. Because Zhang and Ganne (and perhaps Seay) will be playing at the Augusta National Women's Amateur the same week, Stanford will not field a team for the Hawaii event. That means there is only one more event for the Stanford team before P12s, the Silicon Valley Showcase at Green Hills in Millbrae in a month. As of now, there are no other top 25 teams in the field for that event.

I'm also increasingly convinced that Zhang will go pro after this year. While this wasn't the strongest field, she just keeps winning and in this case by a brobdingnagian margin (other than SJSU's Kasja Arwefjall who will be on tour next year). She's already set the school record for individual titles and done so in less than 2 years vs 3.5-4 years for everyone else on that list. There's being part of a team but realistically college golf isn't challenging her that much.
I hope Seay is back for the stretch run but a title can be won without her. The men's team won the title in 2019 with really only two standouts (Isaiah Salinda & Brandon Wu) but one of the other three guys stepped up in each round of match play. I think the challenge for the women's team is that nobody outside of Zhang/Englemann/Ganne (and Heck/Seay) has stepped up all year. Puts a ton of pressure on those three to play well every day, with likely no room for error.

Heck had surgery for TOS yesterday (?). Procedure involved removing 1st rib. She said she would be back on course as soon as possible but no timeline for recovery. click on photo for caption

Ran into the women's team today at the lesson area at the driving range. Apparently their practice facility (aka Siebel) is being aerated this week. Talked to Rachel Heck, Carol Sturdza, and Rose Zhang for a few mins. Items of note:
- Rachel's surgery was a complete success. "It's gonna be a while" before she's swinging a club again (her words), but all signs point to a complete recovery and her returning to the team in the fall. She just has such a positive attitude all the time, everywhere. I am going to try to channel her a little bit next week when I play in a tournament with my wife at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Spanish Bay
- Brooke Seay is going to play the Augusta National Women's Amateur next week, a great sign that she's passed concussion protocols. Didn't see her at practice but Rose said she's doing well
- The team will be playing next week on Maui at Royal Ka'anapali with only one of the regular starters from the fall - Sadie Englemann. Zhang, Seay, and Megha Ganne will be at Augusta, and Heck is out for the rest of the season. A great opportunity for the rest of the team to step up and play well. They will need Englemann and one other player to step up if they are going to have a legit shot at repeating

Thanks for the report, Win! Much appreciated. The schedule on GoStanford.com indicates that Stanford is only entering individuals in the Hawaii tournament. If that is correct, Stanford as a team won't be competing.

3 Stanford golfers will tee it up tomorrow at the Augusta National Women's Amateur. Megha Ganne, Rose Zhang and Brooke Seay will play tomorrow and Thursday at Champions Retreat. The low 30 (plus ties) then advance to play the final round at Augusta National on Saturday.
The Golf Channel will have live coverage tomorrow and Thursday from 10:30 to 12:30. NBC will have live coverage on Saturday from 9 to noon.

Brooke Seay's play will be of particular interest. These will be her first competitive rounds this year following recovery from a concussion. Stanford will need her contributions to contend for a national title.

I just noticed that the head golf coach at Denver U (which is leading the Hawaii tournament) is Stanford alum Martha Richards! She played both golf and basketball at Stanford and was on the 1990 WBB national championship team. The thing that is so impressive about Zhang's wins at Stanford is she absolutely puts the hammer down to emerge victorious. Down by a stroke with four holes to play? No problem, she'll birdie three of the last four to win comfortably. It feels like she uses the first few holes to get a feel for the round, and then shifts into a gear that few can match. Let's enjoy this phenom while she's wearing our uniform.

Tough day for Seay, but keep in mind that golf is a fickle sport and this is her first competitive round in months. Ingrid Lindblad from LSU, considered second to Zhang in terms of being a favorite to win, is +7 with one hole to play. Also, 2021 winner Tsubasa Kajitani is dead last at +12.
Second round tomorrow at Champions Retreat, after which the field is cut to the top 30 and ties. All 72 players will get to play a practice round at Augusta on Friday, and the final round is on Saturday
