McGlinchey, rated #2 of 60 tackles in run blocking, #28 of 60 tackles in pass blocking. Injury prone. A quad tear is a bad injury for pass blocking (lateral movement). SI rated him the #29 overall tackle in 2022. Not worth $17.3 million annually. Not sure whether the next guy is Jaylon Moore, Colton McKivitz or Brunskill. McKivitz was a college tackle who projected as a guard. Moore was hurt. Tough call.
Jimmy G. to Raiders completely makes sense.
Hargrave is an absolute beast, a stud, certainly better than Kinlaw (wouldn't be surprised to see Kinlaw cut), and better the DeForest Buckner, IMHO. And Kevin Givens signed a one year deal for $2.1 million.
Looks like the 49ers added Sam Darnold on a one year deal. I'm assuming that by taking a marginal USC quarterback, they are
extremely confident in both Purdy and Lance. I'm guessing they checked with McCaffrey before adding Darnold who went 4-2 with the Panthers.

Well that was grim...34-7 loss. Thank goodness it was just the second stringers for the 49ers, they looked awful.
One good note...no such thing as a QB controversy. All three backup quarterbacks fell short. Lance had a 111 rating, but threw at least two interceptable passes and he had four sacks. Darnold started out great, ended poorly. Niners rushing couldn't get untracked, passers were a collective 20/31 for 214 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. The INT went to Brandon Allen, but it went through Bell's hands, as did another pass. And when a 49er fumbled a live ball, Bell didn't notice, because his back was turned. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bell be on the cut list soon. Latu should be cut as well, after a lost fumble.
Trey Lance, IMHO, was slow, immobile, and couldn't run or make cuts. He looked like he was 60 years old.
Moody missed two field goal attempts, a 40 yarder that was close, and a 57 yarder that wasn't within a zip code of the uprights.

Martin, not Bell, was the player who had his back to the fumble. Actually, Bell had a solid game (other than the pass that went through his hands). He received some compliments from Shanahan after the game. He is a distinct possibly to make the 53 man squad after the injury to McCloud.
Latu - can’t hang on to the ball, in practice and now in a game - another 3rd Round miss? Time will tell.
I was particularly impressed with Jamison on the punt/KO returns. Overall, he played well.
Otherwise, a typical first exhibition game. In a word, forgettable….

And second in the league for Offensive Rookie of the Year the year prior. After a year with Josh McDaniel his rookie year, the coordinator role in 2022 was split. From SI "Speaking of disasters, the Patriots' offense was one in 2022 as coach Bill Belichick handed the keys to the offense to a combination of Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, neither of whom had backgrounds as offensive coaches." We'll see what happens this year with Bill O'Brien back in charge of the Patriots offense.

Never has something so seemingly consequential for a team been less consequential in reality than the Trey Lance situation with the Niners. Here's a laundry list of reasons nobody should freak out and just let the situation continue playing out.
- First and foremost, the Niners got a starting QB with the last pick of the draft the year after Lance was drafted #3. It doesn't matter where someone is drafted if they turn out to be a good or even great player, or even if they are drafted.
- All teams have the same amount of money to spend and the same amount of draft picks to use. The whole picture is what matters, not perceived value of individual puzzle pieces.
- Trey Lance has had less than 500 snaps in actual games since 2018, he's way too raw and inexperienced to be judging his worthiness as a player.
- This above point makes the news that he isn't #2 this year not the least bit surprising given they had a much more experienced Darnold on the roster too. Lance was given opportunity to beat Darnold out and didn't. Not a big deal, kinda expected.
- Everyone cries about the draft picks traded for Lance. OK, but does anyone think the Niners could afford to have the roster they have with two more first round picks on it? They couldn't even afford a 2nd rd pick this year, let alone a first.
- Lance has to play to get better but the Niners are too good and have too many better options now. Would Niners fans rather have signed someone lesser than Darnold and have Lance be the backup because he was less worse than that guy? Don't think so. The objective is to strengthen the QB room and the Niners did exactly that.
- The fact is 2022 was the year Lance had to play. The Niners gave him an opportunity and he got hurt. It's not his fault, and more Shanahan's for running him like a RB, but that's just unfortunate for Lance that it happened.
- The Niners are serious Super Bowl contenders even having "wasted three first round picks on Lance." I'll take it.
All Trey Lance can do is continue working hard an be ready for his next opportunity. His value isn't high enough for a team to trade anything the Niners would covet for him, and he does have value as the best #3 QB in the NFL. It's just too bad there isn't a way for Niners to get Lance playing in some developmental league.

The 49ers traded away a king's ransome to move up to the #3 overall spot to draft Trey Lance. The Miami Dolphins have parlayed those picks into a very nice roster. Think of how much better the 49ers could be if we had not traded away those picks.

How is it so hard to understand that the Niners couldn't afford those picks? Why does seemingly nobody appreciate one of the reasons the Niners traded the picks for Lance is because they couldn't afford them? How can fans be so clueless about the salary cap realities the Niners face?
The following players on the roster are all paid at top of market at their positions:
LT - Trent Williams
TE - George Kittle
WR - Deebo Samuel
RB - CMac
LB - Fred Warner
DT - Arik Armstead, Javon Hargrave (couldn't have signed him if they had 1st and 2nd in 2023)
DE - Bosa about to be
CB - Charvarious Ward (last year's FA singing that couldn't have been afforded with a 1st rd pick)
Would you rather have all these guys or two lottery ticket 1st rd picks? I'd rather have these guys.
Moreover, the Niners have done well with later rd picks and have a team strategy to take advantage of the NFL's minority executive and coaching incentive program, that gets them 2 extra 3rd rd picks per promotion.
That all said, the obvious move was to select Micah Parsons at #12 instead of trading for Lance or taking any other QB, but the fact is the Niners needed a QB. At the time the move made sense. Nobody can predict how these will pan out when the decisions are made.
The same people who traded for Lance also drafted Hufanga and Purdy, and Greenlaw and Warner and Kittle, and Deebo and Aiyuk, and more. They are also the ones who signed Ward and Hargrave. And, most importantly, they have had their team in the NFC Championship Game in 3/4 years. I'd say they know what they are doing a whole hell of a lot more than reactionary and whiny Niners fans who really are annoying.

Ok, I'll bite. How much better would the 49ers have been if they had the two first round picks (both #29 overall picks) and the third round pick (#101)? And which starter(s) or key backup(s) would have been eliminated due to salary cap reasons? And what kind of guarantee are you claiming that those picks would have worked out perfectly?
The Dolphins picked Cole Strange, who started 17 games as a rookie at right guard, and graded out #61 of 77 qualified guards in 2022. Would he have been better than Banks or Burford?
Channing Tindall, a LB was the third rounder taken last year. He played nine defensive snaps last season.
Saints picked Bryan Bresee, who had a terrific frosh year at Clemson, was injured most of his soph year, backslid a little bit as a junior with fewer tackles, TFLs, assists, and sacks than his rookie year. We'll see how well he does this year. Would he have cracked the DL four deep for the 49ers?

Hypotheticals and musical chairs aside.
The Niners, at this point, got nothing for their 1st round pick in 2021, their 3rd round pick in 2021, their 1st round pick in 2022, and their 1st round pick in 2023. Not hard to imagine that if they had done things differently and used those picks, they'd be a stronger team than they are now.
Adding in the money factor, Trey was guaranteed $34 million. The 12th pick that year, Micah Parsons (the new Face of the Cowboys), was guaranteed a mere $17 million. The additional $17 million could have paid for a lot more depth across the team.

Under Lynch/Shanahan, the 49ers have hit numerous times on Day 3 of the draft. Here’s a partial list of their 5th, 6th and 7th rounds draft choices:
Kittle
Greenlaw
McKivitz
Woerner
Jennings
Moore
Lenoir
Hufanga
Mitchell
Womack
Purdy
Winters
Bell
Graham
That list has more than mitigated the loss of three high round draft choices. Of course, one could say, what about three more guys on top of those players. Sure, but how are you going to pay them and Kittle and Greenlaw big bucks now with several others coming up for a new contract soon. You simply can’t keep everyone.
Speaking as one who advocated selecting Lance (with Fields as my second choice), I can’t say it was a mistake. It was a calculated risk based on information available at the time. Sometimes things don’t work out. I would rather see the Niners roll the dice than make the “safe” choice (i.e. Jones) every time.
Jones is a latter day Steve DeBerg - just good enough to lose. I have no use for guys like that.
(apologies to cardcrimson for dinging a Bama grad. I hope that being Najee Harris’ biggest fan makes up for it).

They also have perhaps the best roster top to bottom of any team in the NFL. So, I’ll gladly accept the misses. All organizations miss on draft picks. Look at the whole. It’s excellent. That’s how I judge Lynch.

Even without the new contract, Bosa has the second highest salary and fourth highest cap hit this season on the 49ers.
And yes, I'm ever so slightly concerned that Bosa isn't in the door yet. Nick Bosa's agent is his brother's agent as well...and his brother got an 8% raise over the highest defensive salary at the time. Nick's brother Joey also held out for 31 days before he signed. Aaron Donald is at $31.66 million, and the speculation is that Nick Bosa wants $35 mms. annually, a spectacular figure. Estimated range for Nick Bosa is between $33.5 million and $34.25 million. Apparently both the 49ers and Bosa's team want a five year deal.
