30 years after #15 seed Santa Clara beats #2 seed Arizona, another #15 seed, Princeton beat Arizona.
That day, Mrs. Mick and Toddler Mick went shopping, while I stayed to watch Arizona and their NBA-bound starters (Chris Mills, Khalid Reeves, Damon Stoudamire, Ed Stokes, Ray Owes) in what I thought would be a beat down. Instead, SCU went out to a 12 point lead in the first half. Arizona then went on a 24-0 run bisecting the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half...but SCU, led by frosh PG Steve Nash, who didn't start but played 30 minutes, cut the deficit and tied the game with just a few minutes left in the game.
Right at that moment, Mrs. Mick and ToddlerMick returned, and daddy was going just a wee bit crazy at the potential upset, and Toddler Mick started to cry and Mrs. Mick gave me that how-old-are-you-anyway look. And SCU beat Arizona 64-61.
And 30 years later, Toddler Mick's #15 seed alma mater Princeton beat #2 seed Arizona, 59-55.
Not good for the Pac 12, and Princeton is unlikely to advance against Missouri, which beat Utah State handily. Still...much fun.
Great story! I'll be rooting hard for the Tigers! They can't lose in the next round!

The FDU 16-1 upset of Purdue has so many stories going for it, that it's almost impossible to believe:
- Purdue has now lost to a 16, 15, and 13 seed in its last 3 tournament appearances
- That includes last year as a 2 seed to another small New Jersey School (St. Peters)
- Purdue had the probable national player of the year on their team
- That player is 7-4!
- FDU had the smallest team in the tournament, averaging just 6-3
- Was the first ever NCAA tournament win for the Northeast Conference
- The star player of the game for FDU (Sean Moore) was born in Columbus, OH, and the game was played in Columbus, OH
- FDU was a 23.5 underdog, and became the greatest upset winning in NCAA tournament history
- And here's the kicker: FDU didn't even win its conference tournament, the team that won it (Merrimack) was too new to D1 to qualify for NCAA tournament, so FDU who lost 66-67 in the NEC tournament championship game, went instead
- You could even add in the fact FDU's coach said on camera after winning the play-in game (!!!), that one of his assistants said the more he watched Purdue on video, the more he thought FDU could win...
#16 UMBC's victory over #1 Virginia will always be the pioneer for being the first #16 seed to win in Men's March Madness, but it could be said that Fairleigh Dickinson's win over Purdue is the most improbable result in the history of basketball, and maybe even sports period? It certainly has the most crazy storylines!

As a 1979 graduate of Penn, I refuse to rule out miracles. That year Penn was a 9 seed (out of 10) and didn't wipe out till it faced Magic Johnson's Michigan State in the national semis. The previous Ivy team to reach the Final Four was Princeton in 1965. Although the odds are long, I'll be rooting for both Princeton teams (unless the women face Stanford).

Princeton wins 78-63. They lead end to end, being up 21 with about 4 minutes left. They had dominant rebounding, great shooting and very good defense. This was not a fluke.

And with UCLA's win, the Pac-12 will have as many Sweet 16 teams as the Ivy League.
The soon-to-be Pac-10 (or fewer) gets none.

Great game. King of mixed feelings for me...both my sons date UCLA alums (and it was their choice if they didn't go to college back east), and I wanted to see the Pac-12 rep stay in...I'm not a big Gonzaga fan, but I do have them in my pool, so...
