Betts to UConn would not make a lot of sense. First, you are always third fiddle to Bueckers / Fudd. And you might get less playing time competing with all the bigs they already have (Edwards, Brady, new player from Egypt)

As long as she doesn't trash talk anyone.
Certainly feels like an inflection point for the program. Adapt or die.
Why can't Stanford take undergrad transfers? That makes no sense. I heard they had to have been able to be admitted out of high school, which is ridiculous. Someone spends a couple of years doing well in college (academics + sport) and that's not good enough? If true, Stanford deserves what it gets across the board. Which I think might be a lot of losing moving forward. Stanford has never been "pure" whatever that means, so c'mon, get with the times. Or don't ask for our money.

Who's going to backup Cam next year? This is so perplexing. Something's going on, is it NIL?
I'm not surprised. Her mom has been throwing hints of dissatisfaction in her tweets.
April 2nd: retweeted a post about Jasmine Carson's big game in the national championship game and added the caption "Using your bench [lightbulb emoji]"
March 30: retweeted a post about Dawn Staley and added the caption "People will try and deny that representation matters."
March 30: retweeted a post about a survey of players in this year's Sweet 16 about who they wish would have been added to their team and added the caption "Don't sleep on the value of a great post player."
March 28: retweeted a post about how black players being coached by black coaches is crucial to their development
March 28: retweeted a post about "getting your worth"
and, most importantly, March 28th, retweet a post about NIL and added: “What is clear and grows increasingly clearer is that the predictions about how NIL was going to ruin everything was just the latest “sky-is-falling” act from College Sports Inc.,which was and still is bent on maintaining control of the money by any means necessary.”#scaretactics
If you read into these tweets it suggest 3 reasons for her leaving: 1) unhappy about insufficient NIL opportunities, 2) unhappy about playing time (lack of star treatment by Stanford), and 3) general unhappiness with Tara and Kate. Seeing Angel Reese's success after transferring surely didn't help either.
My guess is she will end up at South Carolina, Iowa or UConn (most likely South Carolina).
.
lol at "use your bench" and maybe going to UConn, with Geno notorious for not using his bench even when up 40. I know that is just a guess and maybe a good guess, but I find that a funny combo if it would become true.
True, but I'm assuming she would be a starter at UConn since Dorka Juhász is moving on to the WNBA. In any event, her mom clearly wants her on the court more than Stanford used her. Her tweet, quoted by Card10fan above, re: projections of what might have been planned for Lauren was in response to the reporter's assertion that Betts was projected for a big bump in playing time next season. So it wasn't just about freshman year. There clearly was a concern about things not improving next year either.

I think Betts goes to SCar and slots right into the shoes Boston is leaving. Makes the most sense. But it's a shame that Betts won't get the full Stanford experience or the full value of a Stanford education. I still believe in the 40-year decision.

I was lobbying for bigger lineups for most of the year. Betts potentially transferring was not one of my arguments though I guess it should have been.
On the one hand I agree especially early in the year Betts wasn’t ready for the speed of D1. On other hand, I get being frustrated sitting when others are not producing. In the second round loss the guards not named Jump went 60 minutes with 4 points on 2-9 shooting, 5 rebounds, 3 Assists and 5 turnovers. Betts played 8 minutes, though they were not a very effective 8 minutes. 0 points and 2 rebounds.
I think this is leaving too quickly, but I can see why she would be frustrated.

But the fact is, at least from my inexpert observation, she had a lot of flaws and I kept finding myself wondering just why she'd been so highly regarded. Yes, Tara would pull her after a mistake, but she made a lot of them. She never really got away from that dribble before shooting. And for a player who was described as having "great hands," she let a lot of balls get away from her. All season long, I was wondering when is the player who was #1 going to show up. She did have some really good moments, but was inconsistent. Maybe if she goes elsewhere and gets a lot more playing time, she'll turn out to be really good. But wherever she goes, or stays at Stanford, I think she's still at "work in progress" stage.
Agree 100%. Compare her to another 6-7 player, Cardoso of South Carolina, and it’s pretty evident why she didn’t play more. Maybe Betts will develop more athleticism, but that remains to be seen. Good luck to her.

if you take her mom literally, she seems to be saying don't presume that the coaches promised lauren playing time (cause they didn't).
i would infer that the coaches said to lauren that she will be competing with kiki for time at the 5 next year, so work on your conditioning, speed, etc. let's see what you show us in the fall.
i have trouble seeing any problem with that message. pretty much what the 49ers are saying to trey lance.
i wonder if the early exit in both tournaments (and failure to improve in the 2nd half of the season) simply disheartened players.

Wow, this is getting out of control. I see reasons for Betts leaving but Emma-Nnopu is unlikely to have a WNBA career. With the Stanford degree she will have doors open for her career after college. Why place so much emphasis on possible playing time versus fifty or more years in a career after college? Of course a degree from any college can be a good start to a successful career.
Changing back to Betts, IMO her mom would do best to stay off of public media with cryptic posts that might be viewed as complaining.
That 2023/2024 thread might need some modification. Yes, Tony I recall you predicting Betts transferring which at the time I thought there was no chance.

Maybe she plans to play professionally in her native Australia? Maybe the Stanford degree doesn't matter that much then.

I myself was resigned to BETTS transferring given the measly minutes which she was getting
despite performing pretty well in the first five OOC games.
And I just didn't understand Tara's substitution patterns last season at all, which I'm sure
was very frustrating to BETTS and a few others.
Oh well, with BETTS gone, Stanford will only have BRINK and IRIAFEN as legit post players
next season.
Then after next season....good luck, Stanford!

Agnes might already have her degree or be very close. This gives Bosgana and the new recruits more opportunity.
Betts is the larger concern but Tara and Stanford have been too slow to adapt to the changing landscape until well, yesterday’s fundraiser. Hopefully they have learned their lesson and next season will be more successful and lucrative for WBB players. And hopefully Tara will release control of the team and substitution decisions which she is not good at managing. She needs to move to a paint by numbers system where talented players are getting predictable minutes. You don’t develop sitting on the bench. Either way, having the #1 player leave your program is bad publicity but may be in Betts financial interest. I’d never fault a player that is simply exercising the free market that coaches have had all along.
Adapt or retire and bring in Becky Hammon.

I suspect the hastily organized banquet was in part the result of known imminent transfer portal activity, and probably explains the muted mood (losing early in both the Pac-12 and NCAA tournaments didn't help either).
I really love Tara, and respect her so much, but I wonder if now is time to consider enjoying more time in her cabin upstate? I don't see her adapting to the new reality, and while I'd take her reality over the new one 11 times out of 10, we are where we are.
One other thought: I wonder if "Stanford hates fun" has hurt our recruiting (and retention) prospects? It sure seems like campus life is a lot less fun than "in my day" 20 years ago.
Final coda: thank goodness for the Hulls. I don't think you're going to see the kind of quiet, grinding jack-of-all-trades all-stars as much in this new landscape of bravado, fake lashes, Twitter call outs, and taunting.
Seriously wondering if it's time for me to find a new sport to get excited about. Any suggestions?

I think some have alluded to this but it just seems like Tara isn't the type of "players coach" that people are seeing out there right now (IE Dawn, Kim, Cori, etc). She comes off very non-emotional, a little too direct and at nearly 70 years old, I just get the sense there's a disconnect between the team and her, quite the opposite from the glowing admiration say Wiggins and the Ogwumike's had of their coach. Her interviews feel very scripted and the usual statements, just comes off as tired.
I think when Rice chose UCLA she mentioned the way the team gets out in transition and the offense allows her to create, and ever since she said that I've realized why Stanford wouldn't be a fit for her, because it's such a tight run offense. It's stiff. And it feels very old school.
And I think Betts realized she was going to be very tightly used here, everything was going to be controlled and Tara wasn't about to change her style.
I still think Betts should've known of the depth chart, looking at who was ahead of her when she committed. Just like some other really good players we've had over the years, who had to wait 1 or 2 years before getting serious minutes. But I think for Betts, being the #1 recruit especially and not just any other recruit, this was a tough freshman year, even just minutes-wise for her; and so I am not surprised. I don't think she is the typical "transfer portal" kid — but I think this was a moment of realizing how things are going to go next year too, after a rough year and while she probably would love to stick around for the Stanford degree, it's not every day you're the #1 recruit in the country and riding the bench. It makes sense.

With Haley rebounding and in transition, Stanford was a better transition offensive than most programs in the country and their transition offense was better than their half court offense which was a disorganized mess this year.
I don’t think Kiki chose UCLA over Stanford because of that. I gave Stanford coaches a lot of hell for missing out on Susan Rice’s niece but then I saw Kiki’s academic profile of B+ and wasn’t so sure.
Stanford hasn’t done well with securing point guards for 30 years. They are all these reasons why but the reasons 30 years ago are likely not the reasons today and the reasons 10 years ago are not the reasons today in light of Big 10/SEC consolidation, PAC-12 collapse and mostly NIL (where Cori is guaranteeing her upward $70,000 in Nil). How do I know this? Because that is what Cori said re: Osbourne coming back for her 5th year.

who did significantly better after her transfer out?
only dijonai carrington comes to mind. fabulous player - injured at stanford and recruited over when haley arrived. starred at baylor.
jamie carey is a sort-of as she transferred because she was not cleared to play by stanford docs.
RE: WBB: Lauren Betts and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in Transfer Portal -

There is another possible explanation for what is wrong in Tara-land and I hesitate to mention it. Is it possible that the players are anticipating a transition in coaching, and that some are leaving because of the anticipated transition?
That is probably not the explanation, but has to be considered.
Many of the earlier observations seem apt to me. Tara believes strongly in a team-sport in which all players, regardless of their accolades, must develop and earn their minutes. NIL and the transfer portal have undermined that old-fashioned team-discipline oriented coaching that used to win championships. College players are more like pro players now--they are free to move around for a better deal or a softer coach or for promises of playing time, NIL money, or whatever.
I'm going to take a deep breath, but I worry that Stanford sports cannot survive at a high level in the new--corrupt--environment. I will think hard before renewing my season tickets.
