BIG10, I believe everyone agrees that BIG10 is Stanford & CAL first choice. But the BIG10 just picked up Oregon & Washington not us.  

ACC, The ACC will be voting today for the second time to either accept up or not. If we get in great, travel will be horrible and on top of that we are stuck until 2036. 

BIG12, has just added Colorado, Arizona, ASU and UTAH. Obviously the BIG12 is not a academic fit. But is a power 4 conference.

Baylor is a Baptist university that openly opposes homosexuality. Notre Dame is a Catholic university that openly opposes abortion. BYU is a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints university that openly opposes premarital sex. Prospective students who favor what these universities clearly oppose might deem them to be a "bad cultural fit" and wisely shop elsewhere for a university. That would be completely understandable. But I cannot support the notion that Stanford should refuse to compete against these universities and those similarly situated. "Culture" is a wide term encompassing many different facets. If we start having culture tests for sports opponents, we might quickly find ourselves with a small universe of potential opponents.

By the way, lots of things happen on the Stanford campus that I find obnoxious. But I still support Stanford.

We don’t have to agree, but I draw the line at unsafe environments for some of our students and student athletes. BYU is so Stone Age on sex it’s funny, but it doesn’t impact our students. Norte Dame is the same for me on abortion. Baylor to my view is at a different level that could impact our students directly. Not interested.

When I was at SCU in the early 1980s, there was a rule that someone of the opposite sex couldn't be in your room between midnight and 8 a.m. I think it's safe to say that was one of the most ignored rules on the campus. Never heard an RA even bring it up.

The only constant is change. When I picked Stanford, econ was the biggest major, and now CS has > 3x the number of students as econ has. The reputation of Silicon Valley transformed Stanford into a school with a 4% acceptance rate and a bunch of tech geniuses who are going to be setting the course for the future. Is it still a fit for the university to have 5-10% of the class be division I scholarship athletes?

Would UTAH, Arizona, ASU & Colorado support CAL & Stanford joining the Big12?

Positives:
- Big12 is a POWER 4 conference.
- Division: CAL, Stanford, UTAH, Arizona, ASU, Colorado, Texas Tech? TCU? BYU?
- AAU Schools (7): CAL, Stanford, UTAH, Arizona, ASU, Colorado & Kansas. Iowa St apparently just dropped from AAU. ACC has 6 by the way.
- R1: All schools are R1 except TCU(R2)
- Voting Block (Prior PAC schools)
- At least 2 games per year in TEXAS. For selfish reasons.
- Less travel for all sports
- Media Markets: California(39), Arizona(7), Utah(3), Colorado(6), Texas(30), Oklahoma(4), Kansas(3), Iowa(3), Florida(22), Ohio(12), and West Virginia(2). 131million as of 2021 2nd of the Power 4
- Media deal is 67% ESPN & 33% FOX
- Linear & Digital Media Deal
- $31.7 million is better to joining the ACC for free, PAC4/ACC/MWC
- CAL would be Biggest Brand in the Big12
- CAL would be highest ranked public school
- Safe harbor until Big10 invite comes
- Recruiting Fastest growing states: Texas & Florida
- Best basketball conference: Kansas, Baylor, Texas Tech, Houston & Arizona.
- Stability, because they are the cast offs.
 
Negatives:
- Academics below BIG10 & ACC. But would be better than SEC if Stanford & CAL join the Big12
- Weakest POWER 4 conference. Maybe 3rd ACC seems to have a FSU issue.
- $31.7 media deal per school. FYSA, UTAH, ASU, Colorado and Arizona are going in as Full Members.
- LONG GOR.. same as the ACC I believe.
- Culture Fit
- Conference with TCU, BAYLOR & BYU. Not sure admins would not support being in a conference with these schools.  
- Potential issues with politics in Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Kansas
- Travel to West Virginia
- No Blue Bloods. USC, Ohio St, Mich, Texas, etc.  
- CAL & Stanford would have to push for better Academics.
 
Wash
- No Blue Blood program
- BIG10 & SEC don’t want any of these schools. Maybe a Positive.
- Media deal expires in 6 years. Big12 will come to the table 2 more times before the ACC.

One positive would be that Stanford football would have won the mythical "recruiting title" in 7 of the last 10 years when compared to schools that will be in the Big 12 going forward. Only TCU is consistently near Stanford in recruiting rankings. If we're going through a rebuild, having the team with the best players helps.

I view that as positive.  It indicates ESPN sees some value in showing Stanford sports.

Earlier this spring, the Big 12 Conference and ESPN agreed to significantly expand their existing rights agreement, which runs through 2024-25. Under the expanded agreement, hundreds of additional Big 12 sports events annually will be distributed on the Big 12 Now on ESPN+ digital platform.


A month ago I saw Stanford joining the Big 12 as unimaginable.  Now, if no deal from ACC, the Big 12 reluctantly would be my first choice.    My last choice at the moment would be Stanford PAC cobbling together a few random outcast teams.
