Stanford hosting Missouri State in a 2nd round game. The Cardinal fell behind early, but then scored twice to lead at the half 2-1.
You can follow the action here if you don't have access to ESPN+ https://www.ncaa.com/game/6191511/play-by-play
Only 4 shots on goal total, 3 of which have gone in. If the box score is accurate, Stanford already with 3 yellow cards, Missouri State with 0.
Through halftime and the cards looked legit. Actually, the ref has been pretty solid for a welcome change. Beautiful free kick for the first goal. It is really hard to get the ball down fast enough from just outside the 18. Lovely second goal including the build.
The goal against thought continues the brain freeze problem on defense. The men were dominating but got caught on a counter and made about 4 individual errors to give up the goal. At some point that pattern will sink them.
When Adnan missed a point blank shot in front of the goal around 4 minutes and then give up a goal later, I thought Stanford was doomed. So glad to be wrong. The team responded well. I like their chances against Marshall
This team can absolutely beat anybody, including #1. Right now though I don’t expect them to do it 4 more times in a row. Hoping but not expecting.

I hate what Marshall is. 3 Americans on the roster. Ridiculous to have a team that is 90% foreign, many from international club systems.
The ref started ok but now is unprofessionally feuding with our bench. Obvious card on Banks that drew blood not even a foul. I fully expect a BS penalty before this ends. And now a bench card. F@@I this official.
Every FK now is a foul.
Marshall, is better but we have swiped an early goal and are up 1-0. Not sure we can make it hold. Almost gave up a goal on a terrible misclear earlier. Schnedley (sp?) makes some really bad choices as well.
Somebody needs to put Pinto on a stretcher.

I am generally reluctant to criticize referees but this guy is atrocious. Mild fouls by Stanford elicit a yellow card; much worse fouls by Marshall receive just a call. Every use of hands by Stanford are called; Marshall can mug a Stanford player and nothing. I fear a royal shaft in this second half.

Very, very surgical finishing today.
Classy ending there for Marshall. Hope we don’t caught up in this madness. Should have been a straight red not a second yellow.

I hope this ref never officiates a Stanford match ever again. Marshall is full of international player who are older than your typical college aged students
Stanford played fantastic. Marshall had a lot of the possession but Stanford made it count when they had the ball. Stanford defense today held strong. Dunn who had minimal playing time is his previous 3 years played spectacular. Noah Adnan had 2 goal line stops.
The team is playing really well and needs to continue playing great soccer. The way this team is playing reminds me how they were playing early in the year. Great focus, physical, crisp passing and better in finishing.
Go Stanford! All right now!

Violent slide tackle triggered a bit of a scrum. Tackler got a second yellow but it should have been a straight red. A second Marshall player got a second yellow in the post foul pushing. fortunately, it didn’t go full scrum.

Congratulations the Stanford Men’s Soccer on beating #1 seed and national #1 Marshall 3-0!
I was amazed taking a look at the Marshall roster at their homes. Really, really international.
RE: Men’s Soccer -
DenverCard - 11-26-2023
Marshall looked like an international all-star team. And while their roster does not list birthdates, they appeared older than typical college age. The goalie looked to be about 30, and several players had the build of fire hydrants. And all were very skilled with the ball, most notably a midfielder from Jamaica named Matthew Bell. It seemed to me that he could play in the Premier League. Simply based on appearances and the swagger they displayed, it looked like a mismatch. Even up 2-0 I couldn't stop pacing.
Add the above to the referee who seemed frankly biased (as Hieronymus noted) -- perhaps by the crowd, perhaps because he has refereed Marshall before -- and this game was one of the most satisfying I've watched in many a year of being a fan of Stanford soccer. It's been two hours since the game ended and I still feel like screaming, "Yes! Yes! Yes!"
Also: On two occasions, Noah Adnan stopped the ball on the goal line after it got past the goalie. And there were many other arrhythmia-inducing moments on defense.
I believe the video will be archived on ESPN+. Ten bucks gets you the Marshall game and the one upcoming, which will involve another big challenge -- At either Clemson and a big crowd or New Hampshire in December.

Stanford will travel to Clemson to play the Tigers. Stanford defeated Clemson in 2019 (at Clemson) in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA tournament on PKs. And Stanford stuffed Clemson 4-0 in the College Cup final in 2015.
Oregon State also still alive after destroying 6th seed SMU 7-1 in Dallas. And Loyola Marymount makes the final eight as well. The Lions play West Virginia with the winner facing the Stanford-Clemson winner in the College Cup.

I think Stanford will smoke Clemson. They don't have any common opponents, but Stanford crushed #17 G'Town 5-1 and the Hoyas blew through a lot of the Eastern competition. losing to JMU 1-0, who lost to LMU. I think at least a 2-0 victory over Clemson.

Too bad. I don’t know what their expectations were at the start of the season, but National quarterfinals is certainly decent. Congrats to the team.
There are so many great teams at Stanford that we can’t give each the attention it deserves.

I would say OK? They were #1 early in the year; so from that lens it is a bit disappointing. Compared to the #16 seed it is obviously ahead of expectation. And it’s college soccer which is a crapshoot on any day. I think in the end it’s hard to be disappointed with a top 8 finish.
