Rough match. Lost in straight sets; 19-25, 20-25, 23-25.

At least it was well-attended, 824 in Burnham. Tonight is in Maples.

The Cardinal hit .205. Wagner hit .292, Snoey hit .194. Only two service aces for the team against 10 errors and nine, count 'em, nine (9) receiving errors. Our libero had five of the nine receiving errors. Irvine had only two receiving errors and nine service aces. They hit .282.

We're not quite there yet. Hopefully we do better tonight.

Another loss to UC Irvine, this time in front of 1,423 (big crowd) at Maples. At least it was a closer sweep (23-25, 18-25, 31-33). We had a slightly better hitting percentage (.225) and held Irvine to a .236 hitting percentage. Not bad, actually. We had six more assists (39-33) and they had six more blocks (12.5 to 6.5). And Stanford actually had a few more kills (42-39), but that's because Stanford had more errors (47-31). Irvine had six aces to Stanford's two, and Irvine only had 13 serving errors to Stanford's 19.

Theo Snoey had a great match; 15 kills, 3 errors in 34 sets, .353 hitting average. Wagner had his roughest match in quite a while, 7 kills, 7 errors, 23 chances, .000 hitting average.

Kosty spread the playing time around in the second match. Not sure if he was trying out different combinations or was just resigned, but 12 players got into the match, and ten of those got into multiple sets.

Polls came out today. Stanford dropped one to #9. USC (8-0) squeaked into the Top Five. BYU, with four losses, is #6. This Wed. and Fri., Stanford plays #4 Hawaii.

We played valiantly in perhaps one of the toughest venues for a visiting team (University of Hawaii), took the opening set, lost the next two, won the fourth, and went to “deuce” in the final set…but came up on the short end. I’ll let Mick post the stats and recap. It was an entertaining match from a fan’s perspective, maybe 50 Stanford fans/family, the other 90%+ a sea of green. Hope we can flip the results on Friday!

I've never been to a match at Hawai'i, but if there were 50 Stanford spectators, there were 6,782 Hawai'i fans. 

Hawai'i is 9-0, ranked #2 overall and Stanford pushed them to the absolute limit (25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 14-16). What an incredible match!

Theo Snoey had probably his best match for the Cardinal...19 kills, just 5 errors, 40 attempts, hit .350 -- gold standard for pin hitters. Wags was 14 of 37, 6 errors. Nate Clinton had a bit of a rough match with 10 kills, 6 errors, 26 attempts. Middles did pretty well Wainwright was 5/1/9 and Kau Carreira was 4/0/9, both hit .444.

Stanford was actually the better "power" team, hitting .290 overall, Hawai'i hit .216 and Stanford had 20 blocks vs. Hawai'i's 8. Total errors were close, 55 for Stanford, 53 for Hawai'i. Hawai'i serves really well, 11 aces and 18 serving errors; Stanford had seven aces and 24 serving errors.

Theoren Brouillette did a nice job setting for Stanford, but Hawaiian setter Tread Rosenthal had 48 assists, six kills, seven digs and three aces. 

They play again at 9 p.m. our time on Friday.

Thanks, it seemed like every time we were starting to gain momentum, we had a service error. But we were right there, so close to winning! Kudos to our team for battling until the end.

If we can play the #2 team that is 9-0 to a standstill, particularly with a young team that's still developing...then I'm impressed.

Stanford is quite young. They don't have any seniors on the team. Their main three middles are two frosh and a soph. Their two main liberos are freshmen. Their setter and two main pin hitters are juniors, and third pin hitter is a sophomore. The main backup pin hitters are a soph and a junior. Depending on how fast the liberos and middles develop, this could be an interesting year. Next year will be even more interesting as they mature.

Outstanding win over #4 Hawai'i (9-1) in front of 8,559 spectators. Spanked in the first set (19-25), then won the next three sets in extras (26-24, 25-23 and 26-24) showing excellent mental toughness. Stanford hit .600 in the fourth set (16 kills, 1 error, 25 attempts). It was Stanford's first win in Hawai'i since 2013.

Kind of excited at frosh MB Kaumana Carreira, 7 kills, 10 opptys and no errors against an excellent team. Wagner had an okay day (again) with 14 kills in 38 attempts with 5 errors, .237. Theo Snoey crushed it with 23 kills in 43 attempts with 8 errors, .349. Wainwright did pretty well at MB with 4 kills in 9 attempts, no errors. And Stanford cut their serving errors down to 14, that's good. Theo Brouillette had a career best 49 assists, also had six digs, two kills and one of the team's six aces. And native Hawai'ian frosh libero Evan Porter had seven digs and two assists. OH Nate Clinton had nine digs.
