much better from the 38ers than I would have expected.
Eight of Cal's 14 appearances in the final poll took place in the years 1937 to 1958. In the 65 years since then, Cal has appeared in the final poll 6 times.

Who is the only pro golfer to ever have won multiple major championships but not be selected for the Ryder Cup team (either for Europe or United States) in the Ryder Cup era? That's 1927 to 1951 (Great Britain vs. USA), 1953 to 1979 (Great Britain and Ireland vs. USA) and 1979 to present (European team vs. USA).

Answer is John Daly.
He won the PGA Championship in 1991 as a rookie (it was his first PGA tour victory of any kind). Daly was the ninth alternate and only got in because Nick Price withdrew after the birth of his first child -- Daly used Price's caddy, Jeff "Squeaky" Medlin. As an aside, six spectators were hit by lightning during the PGA Championship and one passed away...Daly established a scholarship fund for the spectator's two daughters, one of whom is now a doctor. The Ryder Cup was held a month later, and RC Captain Dave Stockton selected Chip Beck and Raymond Floyd as his two allotted captain's picks. Beck went 1-2, Floyd went 2-2. Stockton considered, but decided against Nicklaus (because of his attitude) and Daly (because of his youth) and Curtis Strange was in poor health. And Beck was 13th in the standings and was 3-0-1 in prior Ryder Cup matches. Stockton also considered Tom Watson and Tom Kite. Kite was 12th in points, but had been playing poorly. And Stockton thought Floyd was the best putter among his options. At 49, Floyd was the oldest to compete in a Ryder Cup. Apparently, Stockton polled other Ryder Cup members who thought Nicklaus would be more of a detriment than a help. Tim Simpson was 11th on the Ryder Cup points list, he wasn't considered. Beck went 1-2, Floyd went 2-2.
Daly won the 1995 British Open at St. Andrews, but Ryder Cup captain Lanny Wadkins literally didn't consider Daly for one of his captain's picks. Instead, he picked Curtis Strange, ranked 61st in the world, and Strange hadn't won in six years. Daly would have been invaluable in four-ball matches. Scott Hoch was a birdie machine. Predictably, Strange went 0-3 in the 1995 Ryder Cup, losing 1-up to Nick Faldo after finishing with three bogeys in a row. The Europeans won back the Ryder Cup by a point, 14.5 to 13.5, after being two points down entering the final round.. The American Ryder Cup team had five rookies, but only one was in his 20s, Phil Mickelson who was 25 (Daly was 29 at the time).

Here's an interesting trivia question for you. The first amateur to win a PGA tour event in 33 years just captured the American Express championship, shooting a 60 in the third round. He's a sophomore at the University of Alabama who won the US Amateur in 2023. What's his name?

Nick Dunlap. I watched the tournament today (and recorded the Bills/Chiefs game for viewing later this evening).
By the way, a technical point - the Lions/49ers game in ‘57 was not a playoff game. In fact, it was a tiebreaker game to determine the Western Conference champion. Tiebreaker games are not considered playoffs, therefore the stats from the game(s) are included in the regular season numbers. That is how Maury Wills was able to play in a record 165 regular season games in 1962 - the Giants and Dodgers played a three game tiebreaker series.

Tennessee and UConn are no brainers (as is another one that is so obvious that I'm surprised nobody has thought of it yet). I assume Old Dominican was meant to have been "Old Dominion", but I think the answer is no. It had 1142 program wins as of the end of the 2021-2022 season. USC, you will be happy to know, is nowhere near the top (810 wins as of the end of 2022).
Louisiana Tech and Texas are close. They were number 5 and 6 as of a couple years ago (1174 and 1152 wins, respectively, as of a couple years ago), but I don't think La Tech has 29 wins in the last two years but it was 18-13 last year and has 6 wins this year, and Texas would have had to amass 51 wins in two years.
So, while I know who the third (obvious) and fourth teams (not obvious, as they have never won a national title and play in the Sun Belt conference after having played in the CAA, but have been playing women's basketball for close to a century so they've racked up 1200 wins through the end of last year) are, I don't know who the fifth.

Yes, Stanford is the third program that has more wins that Tara Vanderveer. There are two to go (based on the ESPN article), and I know one of the two but not the other. Unfortunately, the wikipedia page of most program wins in women's college basketball is updated only through the end of 2022, so you have to add the wins from the last two seasons, and I can only find four programs that add up to more than 1203.

Correct. Dunlap became the youngest amateur to win a PGA tour event since 1910 at the age of 20 and set the tourney record with a 29 under 259. He now has a PGA Tour card for two years, affording him entry to the Masters and PGA Championship.
He's also won the U.S. Junior Amateur. Only one other amateur has won both the U. S. Amateur and the U. S. Junior Amateur. I'll bet you can name that individual...

Yes, James Madison was founded in 1920 and has the oldest women's basketball team (James Madison Dukes women's basketball - Wikipedia). As of 2022, it had 1200 wins, so it is one of the few programs with more wins than Tara.
The fifth is a mystery to me. This list (List of teams with the most victories in NCAA Division I women's college basketball - Wikipedia) has the number of wins by program as of the end of the 2021-22 season. As I mentioned earlier, Louisian Tech and Texas were the closest as of the end of 2022, but La Tech has had a couple of poor seasons and only has about 24 wins since then, so they may be short. Texas has amassed a fair number of wins, but I think not enough to catch up to Tara. So the fifth is a question mark.
