RE: Tara in the media - martyup - 01-22-2024

The tribute ceremony after the game was very moving to me.  What struck me the most was how each of her former players emphasized how much impact she had on their lives outside of basketball and how she kept in touch with them decades after they graduated from Stanford.  They described being a part of a sisterhood that endured time and distance.

I couldn't help but think of the impact this record and this ceremony could have on potential recruits.  In fact, the video of this ceremony should be shown to every recruit on her official visit.

I hope the players that left Tara, like Betts and Nivar, got a chance to watch this ceremony.  IMO, they selfishly put themselves ahead of the sisterhood and missed the opportunity of a lifetime to be a part of Tara's legacy.  How fitting it would be for Stanford to win the National Championship this year as Betts watches the final on TV.

After watching the post game press conference, I love TVD even more.  There aren't many people in the world as humble, talented, and giving as her.  I hope she coaches our team until she's 92.  She obviously loves doing it, and she's the best.

Nice tribute site here:

Ann Killion in the Chron this morning, a bit about the OSU game, but mostly about Tara and her journey, plus the celebration.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/annkillion/article/momentous-day-stanford-s-tara-vanderveer-45-18620270.php

And the AP article about reactions from multiple people about Tara breaking the record. Some wonderful tributes here from a wide variety, competitors, players, coaches, etc.

Among the many, many testaments to Tara's character and her dedication to raising women up, I remembered this story from about 10 years ago. She stands tall above the rest in more ways than one.

Thanks for sharing this old article. I remember the event, but not the article itself, and it's a good one. Just one more example of how special Tara is, how concerned about her players and the game at large.  Davidson did become one of Cal's best players while there.

Marcus Thompson argues for renaming Maples: https://theathletic.com/5218226/2024/01/22/thompson-tara-vanderveer-record-stanford/

Might be paywalled.

You know it’s big news when Tara’s record win makes the lightning round of Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!

This is one I'd missed: https://www.si.com/college/2024/01/22/tara-vanderveer-stanford-all-time-winningest-coach-idaho-career

Great article on Tara's first team. Some things never change. So much good stuff.

RE: Tara in the media - M T - 01-27-2024

Regarding Tara's impact, it struck me to wonder why the Big East Conference or AAC hasn't become a powerhouse WBB conference as the PAC-12 has.   I think the SEC's strength in WBB can be attributed in part to Pat Summit's legacy.

RE: Tara in the media - Mudhead - 01-27-2024

Has Tara quit doing post game interviews?  I missed one after Utah game and again after the Arizona State Game. I always find them interesting and miss them0

RE: Tara in the media - M T - 01-27-2024

I thought it must be posted in another thread, but a search of the Cardboard didn't find this Youtube video.  Here's an hour-long video of the post-game celebration of Tara after #1203

The away game press conferences are sometimes audio only on SoundCloud, sometimes maybe only a written transcript. There's usually a link to whatever format the press conference is available in with the game story on GoStanford.com.

Utah is here:

Arizona State is here:

Thank you for that!  As an Idaho native who left the year before Tara arrived, I've always wondered what those two years were like.  This says a lot about her as a very young head coach.  Some things have changed...and quite clearly, some have not.

Mudhead - Mudhead - 01-27-2024

Thank you much..both for the explanation and the links.

RE: Tara in the media - Sam Leopold - 01-27-2024

By all appearances, Tara's Stanford coaching career is going to handily outlive Sports Illustrated.  Heheheh.....
