RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona 11am Sunday - TonyLima - 01-28-2024

Stanford just got away with an over and back. Somebody please tell me that the ACC referees aren’t as bad as the Pac 12

Arizona gets away with a travel and an offensive foul. And then they get the ball out of bounds.

I didn't take off my socks to use my toes, but I think Cam gets the rebounding sombrero and Hannah the shooting %.

HJ and JH both shot 5 of 7.
Although Lepolo had an unusual number of TO today, both she and Brink led the team with +/- of +28

Hats off to the coach for not leaving either Brink in for the double double-double or Iriafen in for the double-double.

Absolute dominance by Cam today. Monster game. She did it all, everywhere, and all the time. She would have scored 40 if she would have played the last 14 minutes.

13 TO's in the first half, but only 3 in the second half. A few adventures, but I thought Clardy helped a lot.  Played 14 of 20 minutes in the second half and zero turnovers.

Gonna be hard to keep Harriel off the court if she keeps playing this well...

Go Card!

I think Harriel has earned the starting spot over Bosgana.  However, I trust Tara and I don't know the off court  (non-game) considerations.  Harriel has been consistent with her shooting and defense.  While Bosgana has had flashes of excellence, she often makes poor passes into traffic and she has cold shooting games.

Maybe Harriel is better coming off the bench. I don't think that Tara will change the starting lineup. But maybe she will be a bit quicker to make a substitution. Harriel is bringing the energy when the team needs it. She is playing like someone who doesn't want to come off the court. Development of Harriel and Clardy also gives Tara more opportunity to give Jump and Lepolo some rest. They were playing 37, 38 minutes a game which will wear them out by March. Lepolo still played 33 minutes in both routs of the Arizonas.

- Harriel has been a very consistent positive for a number of games in a row now. I also think it might be time for her to start. Bosgana is a solidly consistent rebounder, but the rest is pretty erratic.
- Jump had a weird 1st quarter. 3 made 3s and 4 turnovers.
- Lots of bail out calls for UA in the first half.
- I think that’s 4 games in a row with an uncalled bank shot 3 for our opponent. Absolutely bizarre.
- off game for Leopolo and in general the team didn’t handle the press well in the second quarter.
- absolutely absurd rebounding numbers today. 49-21.
- it wasn’t quite dirty for UA, but the strategy clearly was to goon it up a bit.
- Cam takes a beating without calls like few players I have  seen in women’s college ball. And today was slightly better vs. a typical PAC game.

Bosgana provides more length which is important defensively at the outset of the game.  She keeps starting for her defense.  Her minutes will depend on how the game unfolds.

Top 5 teams in NCAA WBB rebounding differential:
+28 (!!) for Stanford today makes the season differential 338 in 21 games = 16.1
LSU 15.1
-15 (!) for UCLA today makes their season differential 286 in 20 games = 14.3
So. Carolina +2 today make the season differential 268 in 19 games = 14.1
Texas 12.8

Top 4 teams in FT%
Stanford 290/355 81.7%
Santa Clara 250/307 81.4%
Creighton 198/244 81.1%
Gonzaga 265/327 81.0%

Stanford had pretty good shooting in the first half:
  FG% 53.3%  3FG% 40.0%  FT% 100%
In the 2nd half, it was
  FG% 57.6%  3FG% 50.0%  FT% 93.3%

I like the way we came back stronger in the 2nd half.

Today. But Harriel on Friday was 0 for 2, so that hurt her.

RE: WBB: Stanford 96 -- Arizona 64 - 81alum - 01-28-2024

1) First, sad that Arizona was playing without its best player and other depletions.  With her, they might have been more competitive, but they still would have had no inside presence to counter Brink and Iriafen.

2) Yet another incredible game by Brink.  25 points and 19 rebounds in 26 minutes.  And no foul trouble.

3) Iriafen continues to fight fouls.  But even though she played less than half the game, she had even more baskets than Brink.  Two headed monster indeed.

4) Great to see Jump getting her shooting solidly back on track, now for the second game.  Let's hope she keeps this up for the rest of the season.

5) Harriel continues to impress, especially now that she has cut down on turnovers, which has been a weakness.  She leads the team in three point shooting percentage at an incredible 47%.  But I liked to see her drive on the basket too, something I had not seen before.  She is beginning to look like a well rounded guard.

6) The turnovers were not good, but not entirely unexpected given Arizona's play style.  They were pushing, shoving, lunging, jumping into passing lanes.  I hate the overly physical defense--this was as bad as anything I remember seeing from Colorado.  They paid a price with foul trouble--and should have paid an even higher price.

7) Our rebounding differential was--for the second game--truly extraordinary.

8) We are hitting on all cylinders, but our toughest test since Colorado comes next weekend, the most important remaining weekend of the regular season.  Hope to see you all at Maples.
