Agree, Bob. Don't intend to start a discussion here, but it is baffling that there is such aggressive opposition to a goal of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Not so baffling if you’ve ever been a victim of a DEI brigade. But let’s not ruin a good board with a DEI discussion. It will solve nothing and life is too short to mess with it.

Levin previously told the Faculty Senate and repeated to the New York Times that universities should “get out of the business of commenting on current events”. Rather, encourage students to listen to different perspectives and form their own perspectives.
Fair objective, but it will not satisfy a lot of protestors. Also, there are issues like NIL in which Stanford has a big interest.

Jon lived in the same frosh dorm as me. He's a great guy and the most well rounded intellect (Math & English major) of any person I met at Stanford. He features in one of my favrorite stories from The Farm. The first real class in the economics major is Intro to Microeconomics and it came in three flavors: 51P (easy-no calculus), 51Q (hard-with calculus) and 51A (insane). He asked me if I wanted to take 51A with him because it sounded "fun". I demurred, too embarassed to admit that I got in off the waiting list and only because Loma Prieta shock the campus the year before. The story kept getting better first when he won the John Bates Clark medal (awarded to the best economist under the age of 40, and considered harder to get than the Nobel), then when he became Chair of the Econ dept, and then Dean of the GSB. And now the University President!
That story gets relayed and continued from his perspective. I didn't even make it to the first day.

I am excited for Stanford that he's taken on this challenge. He's a Stanford person through and through and went there when Stanford was a fun place to go to school, full of people who took ideas seriously but not themselves too seriously.

Thanks, Mick. Based on the reports of the "War on Fun" from the administration, the behavior of an associate dean and law school students, the article in The Atlantic about campus protests, and the poor leadership by the Athletics Director, Stanford looks and sounds unrecognizable from my time there or even from the last time I was on campus for reunion (2019). The latest two announcements (Kyle Smith and Jon Levin) make me optimistic about the short and long term future.

Less than a week after Levin was tapped at Stanford, UC picked Berkeley’s Chief Innovation Officer Richard Lyons as its new Chancellor. Prior to his current role, he was Haas business school dean. Is this a new trend? I don’t recall business school deans being a feeder job for the top job at elite colleges. Interestingly, both Levin and Lyons hold PhDs from MIT.

Also, both men earned an undergrad degree from the school they will be leading.

Wally Sterling was a lovely guy. I met him at a wedding reception in around 1980 and we had a great conversation. He had been the president of Stanford during my first three years there and I’d been very sad to see him retire.
