"Shocking the world" at Syracuse. How far Stanford Football has fallen since EUTM mugged USC in the GOAT upset.
Oy.

Yeah, those were the good ole days.  We were known for intellectual brutality.  Now we known as a smart doormat.

The other teams still fear us!  ... in a game of academic decathlon
On the football field?  ... meh
At this point I'd settle for Respect, as a first step.
Not sure it'll happen tomorrow, we'll see.

OK, raise your hand if at beginning of season you had:
3-0 CAL visiting FLST at 0-3.   Seminoles still favored by a FG.   ESPN2 7pm ET on Saturday.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/401635551/california-florida-st

CAL likely gets all-ACC RB J.Ott (ankle) back in the lineup, with RB Thomas also.
https://www.si.com/college/cal/football/cal-rb-jaydn-ott-probable-for-florida-state-game-01j80mkhgvvj
Should be a decent game in the BICOASTAL Academic Coastal Conf.

If Bears beat FLST, then 8-4 or 9-3 is within reach for them, decent bowl.

For us, we are not favored today in any of our remaining games, except Wake Forest (in PA).
Even SJST is slightly favored over us.  We are under 30% likely to beat CAL.
To even dream for a bowl, we need to knockoff Cuse Friday night.  We need three turnovers to do it.
Cal got 4 against AUBN and pulled off the upset.

Cuse 23...Stanford 24.

RE: 2024 Stanford at Syracuse Predictions Thread - needle - 09-20-2024

I had a question for Bing's Co-Pilot. Here was the answer:

Quote: In the 2023 NCAA football season, Hawaii, Colorado, and Washington State share some interesting statistical similarities:

High Passing Yards: All three teams have a strong emphasis on their passing game. Washington State, for example, averaged 343.4 passing yards per game.
Struggles in Rushing Yards: These teams also faced challenges in their rushing offense. Washington State averaged only 93 rushing yards per game.
Defensive Challenges: They have had difficulties on the defensive side, allowing significant yardage and points to their opponents.
These commonalities highlight their offensive strategies and defensive vulnerabilities. Are you a fan of any of these teams?

For those who are actively blocking out memories of the 2023 football season, these three teams were the only victories on Stanford's schedule last year.

I posit that Stanford only has a chance in 2024 against teams with similar qualities (or lack of quality). Does Syracuse fit the bill?

High passing yards:  Syracuse ranks 3rd in passing ypg (367.5).
Struggles in rushing yards: Syracuse ranks 77th in rushing ypa (4.19).
Defensive challenges: Syracuse ranks 107th worst in yards per play (6.17).

Stanford *definitely* has a chance to win this one outright, though I'm dismayed at the reported injuries on the Stanford defensive line.

Stanford 29 - Syracuse 27

RE: 2024 Stanford at Syracuse Predictions Thread - SkiBum80 - 09-20-2024

Got supportive email from Stanford football.
Pumping up and hyping up this Syracuse game, the historic start to our ACC play, etc.
In it was this sentence:
"Stanford looks to carry the momentum of its commanding victory over Cal Poly out east to tally its second win of the season."
Now I appreciate their sentiment. Their heart is in the right place.
But it kind of struck me as if our baseball team had sent out an email:
"Straight off of our crushing beatdown of the Sisters of Sorrow softball team, we move on to historic ACC conference play!"

Stanford dominated Syracuse in the first half.  Do you appreciate the email any more now?

Been on a flight
Just landed in Canada
I’m coming to a dreadful realization that perhaps the Cards play better when I’m not watching.

Exactly my method.  Money on the line, pick with the brain; cost-free choice, pick with the heart.  Tonight, my heart won the week!

Cheers,

IMHO, Best nicknames for the week go to:

CardCrimson: Trees vs Sore excuse
Fullmetal: Cardinals vs Orangutans (although I had to overlook the plural!)

Any other nominees?

Thanks for calling this out, Lefty.  I have often thought about how we might highlight a winner for each week's best nickname.  So many of you find exceedingly clever monikers and I want to find a way to reward that.  Since the inception of the predictions widget, Stanford football has been pretty grim.  Often it's this community's wit and creativity that has kept me going.

I had to go with an animal analogue!
