I actually enjoyed the individual initiative displayed by the team in the exhibition game. CAL State came into the game very loose. They reminded me of the CAL Baptist team that almost beat us in the Thanksgiving Tourney in BC a few years ago — small, confident, aggressive, unafraid to take quick three pointers. In fact, their entire team averaged 42% from behind the arc in our game, which could have been a recipe for disaster for our young team. But our team answered the call and scored over ninety points of their own — quite impressive!
I enjoyed our team’s confidence and fresh approach. Plus their ball control, when facing multiple full-court presses. And their aggressiveness was fun to watch. Perhaps they need to play more loose this year and not overthink every possession.
It will also be fun see our new players as the season progresses! Three freshmen, a sophomore, and a junior bring a lot of new talent to our team.
SHAY IJIWOYE is a personable four-star point guard from Phoenix who averaged 14.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per games as a senior in high school. She’s has not played yet this season as she has what has been characterized as a mild injury.
KENNEDY UMEH is a 6’4” center who played on the World Championship U17 Team with Nunu Agara where she averaged 6.1 point and 6.1 rebounds per game in ten minutes of play. Kate said that she is focused on getting in shape and learning the collegiate game.
HARPER PETERSON is a 6’3” post who played for Whitney High school in Rocklin, CA. She helped lead her team to two conference titles while averaging 14 points and 9 rebounds. She grew up playing against her father who was a 6’9” center for Gonzaga University.
MARY ASHLEY STEVENSON is a sophomore transfer from Purdue University who was Big Ten Freshman of the Year. She’s a confidence young lady who scored 53 points in a game as a high school player.
TESS HEAL is a 5’10” junior from Melbourne, Australia who played collegiate ball at the U of Santa Clara the past two years. She posted great stats at Santa Clara earning the WCC Player of the Year for the past two years. She seems to be in an adjustment period with her new team.
I’m excited to watch the whole team develop!

I found the presser quite interesting. Kate did a good job. The audio for the questions was poor, but the answers were audible.

She praised Nunu, among others, acknowledged that defense was the priority to work on. Nunu said all the right things. It is what we have come to expect from a Stanford WBB superstar in the making--humble, confident, reflective.
Kate noted that we have excellent three point shooters this year--that it is a strength, and an improvement. She noted that we had 6 different people hit threes and two others that are excellent shooters who didn't, and that this will "help us spread the floor." That is saying quite a lot given Jump's graduation. I will also note that for some reason our three point shooting is almost always better early in the season than later in the season. I think perimeter defense is probably something that a lot of teams dramatically improve on as the season wears on. So many time I have started a season ecstatic about our three point shooting, only to see it dissipate down the stretch. Hopefully this season it will be a strength all season long.
On the point guard situation, Kate noted that Shay and Talana are expected back soon. Talana is one of our best defenders, she said, and we certainly missed her tonight. Shay is "extremely" quick on offense and pesky on defense. "We have a lot of depth at guard, and that is something a little different from the past couple years."
On our defense, she said we need to play tighter since they were shooting in our face. We adjusted in the second quarter but should have done that earlier. We needed to be more aggressive on the ball. My comment: she certainly seemed to know exactly what the problem was and was very forthright about explaining it.
"We are going to get everyone's A+ game...because it is Stanford. We are a young team...this is a great lesson for us and it will really help us."
My overall impression: Kate sounded exactly like Tara. "This is putting together a puzzle, and I am excited about how much we will improve, game to game and week to week." And of course she sounds sincere, she isn't just saying it for effect. She has indeed absorbed the TVD ethos. For those Cardboarders who wanted a newer, younger, dynamic coach who changes TVD's style: tough luck. This IS a newer, younger, dynamic version of TVD. Kate may have her own identity, but nothing obviously stood out as a departure from a classic TVD presser. For better or worse, this is Tara's coaching philosophy delivered by the next generation.

Big thank you to Baez and 81. I'll just add that Kate may be using Tara's style, but inevitably she will develop her own unique approach. I was apprehensive about this season. Much less worried now.
