Kate Paye seems to have been outcoached in this one.

I would say Demetre had a really solid game. A quiet 11 pts & 8 rbs (5-8 fg)

Right there with you, Bob. I thought joining the ACC was supposed to improve our commercial exposure.

RE: Stanford WBB: Stanford 69 UC Davis 56 - 81alum - 11-13-2024

An ugly game which will advertise one effective way to defend against our continuity offense.  Of course it would be UC Davis that discovered a way to mess us up--it was UC Davis that taught us our offense, and they know better than any coaching staff in the nation what you can do to disrupt it.  Furthermore, the officiating style tonight allowed for more contact and handsy, grabby behavior than we have seen in the earlier games, and it seemed that our young team had problems adjusting to it.  Our 16 turnovers far far outpaced our turnover rate in any previous game.  And going 5/20 from three point range was a natural consequence of the herky jerky disruption of our offense.  All that smooth motion that we saw against Gonzaga slowed down.  There were way too many times when a player had the ball and seemingly could not figure out who to pass it to.  Those long pauses while the ball handler waited for someone to get open became commonplace, but much of the time there just wasn't enough off ball movement.

Not only do we need to clean up those turnovers, we now must expect every team we play to try out their version of the Davis defense, since it is on film for all to see.  So until we solve this defense, we will see it over and over and over.  If Davis can do it with their personnel, there is no reason Indiana, Morgan State, Cal Poly and the whole future schedule can't play it.

I am curious to know just what this defense was.  I know (and mentioned in the preview) that Davis has employed a "junk" defense, but I am not sure if this was it.  At the chalk talk we were told that Davis uses a "swarming" defense--that every time the ball goes inside they collapse on the paint so that posts cannot afford to take more than one dribble, if that.  But this does not explain the way they disrupted our three point shooting.

There are some positives.  Obviously Agara's offense was the key to victory, which is why she played 37 minutes.  Ogden only played 20 minutes and so she was the most efficient offensively.  Harriel led the +/- by a wide margin, which must reflect her defense, since her offense and her turnovers were nothing to brag about.

And there are some negatives.  Tess Heal had a rough game, going 0/4, 2 turns, no assists, and the worst +/-.  But Clardy was also 0/4, although her two three point attempts both went halfway down and came back out.

We also had a paltry 9 assists, which makes sense given how disrupted our offense was.  Basically, our offense was Agara and Ogden driving to the basket and hoping they would not be called for an offensive foul.  It worked well enough, but just barely.  Giving Davis a lead with less than a minute left in the 3rd quarter should have been a massive wake-up call, and apparently it was just that, since we outscored them 20-9 in the 4th.

RE: Stanford WBB: Stanford vs. UC Davis, preview and game thread - M T - 11-13-2024

Who had a worse game?  Stanford or the refs: Ed Sidlasky, Teresa Stuck, Esther Hsu
  (Not Stanford)

Shooting by quarters   FG% (3FG%)
  46.7 (33.3) ;  26.7 (14.3) ; 52.9 (40.0) ;  50.0 (20.0)
A bad 2nd quarter.  Q1 is about normal.  Q3 was good.  Q4 was slightly bad.

OR%  14/34 = 41.2%
DR%  27/31 = 87.1%
  Total 128.3             Dominant

Although Stanford shot well in Q3, that is where Davis outscored Stanford.  Why?
72.7%FG, 66.7%3FG,  8/9 FTs for UCDavis, (0/0 FT for Stanford.)
When the shooting is like that, rebounding follows.  Davis got 1 OR + 7 DR while Stanford got 1 OR + 2 DR.

---

None of the 3 refs has ever called a Stanford game in the NCAA tourney.  Since Stanford's "new" web site has no history, I can't search Stanford's records.
Sidlasky's been around a long time, but the only NCAA West games he's reffed were almost all East Coast teams  (Fl. Gulf Coast x 2, Maryland, Va Tech, DePaul, Tx A&M x 2, Drake, Florida State, Western Illinois.)  The other two refs are far less experienced.  Hsu has done only 3 post season games (NIT) 2016 and later.  Stuck has only done 3 NITs and one NCAA game starting in 2019.

I guess these refs drew the short stick and had to fly across the country.

Are those other teams facing the Princeton offense every day in practice? One builds up instincts by practice.

Re "Obviously Agara's offense was the key to victory,"
I disagree... We held their score down by 21 points over their previous game. DEFENSE is why Stanford won. Rebounding differential was a big part of that.
Look at the 3rd quarter. Our defense failed us there. Perhaps the officiating contributed to the defensive problems in that quarter.

Re whoever said that Kate was outcoached....,.... Look at the difference between the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Oh wait, there's the difference! BobK had to watch from home. The team needed your cheering, Bob!

True enough.  Other teams are unlikely to master this defense as well as UC Davis.  But it is on tape, and they will get ideas.  I have ugly memories of Cal coming up with the killer defense against us in 2023 even though they narrowly lost the game, but then watched USC use it a week later to defeat us.  Maybe USC comes up with that defense without the benefit of the Cal tape, but it did not help us to have our weaknesses exposed.

Point taken.  I should have said "Obviously Agara was the key to our offense."  I meant to say we became much more one dimensional on offense than the prior games.

RE: Stanford WBB: Stanford 69 UC Davis 56 - M T - 11-14-2024

Agara was in her own dimension.  But her dimension is the one that most top teams can stop.

Our 3-point shooting offense got its nose bloodied.  The other teams are not the only ones who will study the tape.

At the chalk talk there was discussion of Agara as an undersized post, and the difficulty of playing against taller players.  She can't simply jump on two feet and hope to always break through the ceiling, she needs to move under the basket and use the basket as protection.

Nunu is the same height as Alyssa Pili and Nneka Ogwumike, so it is possible for a dominant post to be 6'2".  But at the higher levels such posts have to be crafty under the basket, and Agara is still learning.

RE: Stanford WBB: Stanford 69 UC Davis 56 - WBB fan - 11-14-2024

Lots of great comments made.

Re Nunu, yes, she was the heart of the offense last night, but her rebounding was also crucial. She's going to learn as the season goes on, and I think she's going to be a great one. I continue to be disappointed in Stevenson. Freshman of the year in the big 10? Hard to understand based on what I've seen so far. Maybe it's just getting used to a new system and new teammates. I hope so.

Re those who said Brooke had a solid game, yes, at times last night. But she was also the Brooke who could be confused at times. Ogden was solid, I think, but she was really hampered by the officiating, four fouls cut her playing time, and to me, several of those fouls looked very iffy.

Bottom line for game, it was a really ugly game, and one that, to me, just looked like the team was out of sync a lot of times. Some of the turnovers, just butterfiners and what??? Ooops. Where's the ball, of, it's over there . . . Really bad.

Still, it was a W, so at least there's that.

RE: Stanford WBB: Stanford 69 UC Davis 56 - mbdude - 11-14-2024

in my opinion Leopolo hinders the offense  not a viable 3 pt shooter so the defense still plays off her. also seems much slower.
rather see Harriel at point, and Ogden or Clardy start
