This is completely idle speculation on my part, but I wonder if he was told that Stanford is going to go after an incoming QB transfer. The biggest name that at least theoretically could be brought in is Miller Moss from SC. Moss, in his transfer announcement, thanked his senior thesis advisor, fwiw.
Most likely, I'm way off about Moss. But we'll see if Stanford brings in someone. I mean, Andrew Luck probably would be able to help with recruiting a QB, I would think.
Well, Moss supposedly wanted to come to Stanford in the first place but Shaw wasn't interested. Definitely a family connection with his mother a Stanford grad and his sister a Stanford student.
Not sure why Daniels would want to leave if he was assured of being the starter next year. I mean it's not like he could come into a top team and get the QB position.
Wonder if TT promised Brown the starters job next year to keep him out of the transfer pool.

Does Andrew Luck have any recruiting restrictions in his new GM role? What limits does he have on contact with HS recruits and with players in the transfer portal?

He can make the same calls, texts, letters, etc. as the rest of the staff but he can’t participate in any off-campus recruiting activities such as in-home visits or camp evaluations. Those are limited to the 1 HC and 10 assistants.

In Taylor's comments about Bear, he said the he'd be joining early and competing for the starters spot. . . .

In the Southern Section Division 2 championship game, Bachmeier finished with 92 yards passing and 66 yards rushing as his Murrieta Valley team lost 31-28.

I am virtually positive TT would not tell Daniels, or anybody else, they are "assured" of being a starter next year. Everybody will compete. Some guys, like Ayomanor are probably quite confident they will start. Anybody who believes that somebody "better" can't displace them is a fool. Daniels might not be willing to take the chance he wouldn't get to play this (his last) year. Bachmeier and Brown might be too much competition to take a chance on. Add in a Moss type transfer, the odds go down even more.

It will be interesting to see where Daniels ends up. At first I was mildly surprised to see him enter the portal, but upon reflection it’s probably the best move for him. He hasn’t connected with TT as the QB coach after two seasons and there doesn’t seem to be much upside in that relationship. At his new school, he’ll be the newbie in the QB room without suffering the pressure of an incumbent starter potentially losing the job to a young’un.
And alas, “we won’t have Ashton Daniels to kick around any more.”

I didn’t watch enough of Cal this year to judge their OL play, but despite having the same record as last year, the team seems much improved.
Of their six losses, only the last game of the season was a blowout. The rest were by one score, and they lost four games by a total of 9 points combined.
I would have been thrilled to have that season.

Well, the Kal fans are not at all thrilled. They expected much more from the running game. Ott may still have been a bit hurt, but mostly there were no holes. Mendoza also got sacked a lot. The fans were expecting improvement across the board and they didn't get it. Many of the Kal close losses were caused by their inability to hold onto the ball and burn clock when they had the lead. Lots of 3 and outs in Q4 can do that to you. Kal had a relatively good defense but it could only do so much.

Give the Calgorithm a taste of victory against an SEC opponent and watch them harbor delusions of grandeur for the rest of the season.

Speaking of QB's I wonder whatever happened to Myles Jackson. He came in with as high a 247 rating as Bachmeier does. Yet he never gets mentioned as someone who might be in the mix of competition for playing time. I guess TT must not be very impressed with what he sees of him in practice. A little surprised he isn't hitting the transfer pool.

Exactly -- not even on the depth chart? There must be some story there?
As for Ashton, I think he showed signs of improvement over the last half of the season, but wasn't consistent with it. I'm a little stumped on his thought process. He had a reasonable chance of starting next year, unless someone whispered in his ear. Hard to see any major FBS program offering him as much playing time as he had at Stanford. I could see Luck flat out telling TT that --one way or another -- the team needs more than the Daniels/Lamson duo has to offer.... Miller Moss seems like low-hanging fruit for Stanford. If they turn their nose up at him on academic grounds, then the portal will remain out of reach for Stanford.
On the other hand, if Daniels ends up in the SEC and lighting up the joint, it will be a pretty damning commentary on the staff's current ability to develop QBs. Though, I'll believe that when I see it.

some stats on transfer portal mobility (you can select specific sports), transferred to new school, returned to old school, still active (appears to be the default bucket if they can't put you in one of the other two)

a significant number (30% for 2023 for FBS football) were in the last bucket

Gaethan Bernadel "to the NFL" feels a bit disingenuous to list, as he is out of eligibility regardless, but I suppose it's different than simply moving on from football (as some others who are now out of eligibility may).

I'm not surprised at all. This is a rational decision by a rational human being. After two years as the starter at Stanford, Daniels observed that he has plateaued at a level that will never get him to the NFL (or to a bowl game). Maybe the OL and running game will improve to make his job easier, thanks to speculative inbound transfers, but wouldn't he rather choose a new environment where both of these factors are already in place and therefore more in his control? Wouldn't he at least try a new environment where he might flourish due to any combination of coaching and the surrounding cast? We fans are making the same observation but in reverse - why not try a new QB at this point? Maybe it's Ashton's fault, maybe it's not, but we've put two years into the experiment now.
Also note several additional factors:
1) he is graduating early and leaving as a grad transfer, so he's not trading off a Stanford degree;
2) he still has his redshirt, so he could spend his first year in a new system as a backup and still have another bite at the apple the following year;
3) as you say, Stanford might overrecruit him with an inbound transfer or underclassman;
4) other programs will likely have more money for him than Stanford, which is likely to offer its money to other inbound transfers;
5) he may still be able to return to Stanford after testing the waters, although it seems very unlikely and would be a worst-case scenario for him.
The worst of all worlds for him would be to become the new Justin Lamson, sticking around to burn his eligibility on a limited role when he could have entered a better situation.
Daniels may have done us a favor by making the first move so that Luck, Taylor, and Admissions have no illusions or fallback plans related to our QB situation for next season. I think the right thing happened here for all parties.
Best of luck to Ashton! I have enjoyed watching his incredible grit, toughness, and athleticism!

Unfortunately we won't see what Daniels might have been with a good offensive line. He was a man underfire on every snap. With a bit more time he might have developed his pure QB skill set to the point where he could throw nearly as well as he could run.

Strongly agree with all of the above. Most importantly, he will get his degree. That was at least one of his goals, and he has accomplished it. Daniels may not have been interested in a graduate program at Stanford. Artificially not graduating and remaining another year (or doing some kind of post-bac program) may not have appealed to him either. If he can get some program to pay for at least one (and maybe two if he takes the redshirt year) years of graduate school, that is arguably a much better outcome for him. That would be true even if he was a "Justin Lamson" somewhere else. IMO he isn't ever going to be NFL material. He may not agree with that assessment, which makes going elsewhere even more attractive. The "worst case" is still a good deal for him.
