Game attendance was just 26,219. Toledo is just an hour away, Pitt is about four hours away. Seems like paying customers stayed away in droves.

and that's likely "seats sold" including who knows how many each team had to buy and may not have used....

According to reports, there were fewer than 10,000 people actually in attendance. It was at a nice venue (Ford Field) and both universities were within driving distance.

Can't find this year's ratings. Laster year's rating for this game was a 1.3, with 2.23 million people watching. It was the 17th most popular televised bowl game last year:

Honestly, it is kind of dumb to open the transfer portal before the end of the season.

well the end of this season is 20 Jan 2025 so not allowing transfers until after that date would likely stop enrollment in January for transfers (which will not happen)...but if they could not be enrolled for the semester/quarter that starts in Jan it could be an advantage for quarter schools where they could enroll for spring quarter.....

and Oklahoma did play their game with 20+ players having entered the portal

and then there is Cam Ward who apparently opted out at halftime of the UM/ISU game....after setting the career TD passing record....

which gets back to the question of how long will ESPN find bowl games to be a viable/profitable content option in December?

Content is king and live sports are the most popular content available on television.  It is really that simple.  The first week of bowl games averaged 1.234 million viewers.  Considering those five games featured the dregs of those qualifying for a bowl, that tells me there is a big appetite for televised football regardless of the quality.

College football is booming and the bowl games are part of that boom.  Even with CFP expansion, I don’t foresee any significant reduction in the overall number of bowl games.

RE: College Football Playoff Predictions? - ADPinWDC - 01-01-2025

Bold comeback bid by SunDevils nearly blew up a lot of CFP brackets in LoneStardom.
Horns prevail in OT.

Duckies getting blown out in first half in the Rose Bowl on both sides of the ball.
Buckeyes clamping down Oregon with very quick Defense, and a superior passing game.  Impressive.
Ducks hustle for a late TD+2 on last play of the half, and then go in on opening drive, down only 34-15.
If OHST scores again, then I think Oregon is done.

Terrorist car attack in NOL pushes Sugar Bowl a day to Thursday.
Domers vs Dawgs is a tossup.

TEX vs OHST is a great Semi; and ditto vs OREG.
PNST vs either GEOG or NDAM is a solid matchup.

So far, the 12-team Playoff is working on all cylinders, giving the country much better matchups.
Lots of intrigue still remains for the Champ game with any of 4 or 5 teams that can take the trophy.

The quarterfinals do far have made the seedings into a joke. Despite a lot of fans pushing to play the quarters on campus, I think using the bowls has worked out much better.

Well it didn't work out better for Oregon which did not have a home game that they probably deserved.

I was curious to see the impact on Rose Bowl attendance of this new arrangement. Not surprisingly, attendance today was down. Of the 26 Rose Bowl games played since the stadium was reconfigured (and not counting the game played in Arlington during Covid), only 4 Rose Bowls have had fewer attendees than today's total of 90,732.

In a sane world, Michigan upsetting Ohio would have had implications.

RE: College Football Playoff Predictions? - ADPinWDC - 01-01-2025

Kudos to Coach Ryan Day at OHST; they came ready to play.

From here, if they beat TEX -- and they have now opened a 4.5 favorite on the Horns -- they likely get NDAM vs GEOG winner.
I don't see PNST having enough offensive firepower to beat the Domers or Dawgs.
We don't want to see a B1G Buckeyes vs N.Lions rematch from a 20-13 game in Nov. won by OHST -- as the National Champ game.

Give us:  TEX vs NDAM or GEOG... [not really keen on a TEX vs GEOG rematch, but will draw an audience.]
OR,  OHST vs NDAM or GEOG.
Those matchups are ratings bonanzas.

What draws the most eyeballs?  Probably OHST vs NDAM, with the big Catholic H.S. national audience.

ACC flamed out early with CLEM and SMU.
So far, the ACC is a mostly a bust in bowls... only SYRC winning Holiday Bowl (WAST), and LOUV in the Sun Bowl by a point over WASH.

RE: College Football Playoff Predictions? - ADPinWDC - 01-02-2025

GIANTS got all four of the Final Four -- nice!
Just 3 of 4 in my bracket, but I had OREG all the way.

After OHST drubbed the Ducks, they now list as a 6 point fave over Horns.

NDAM beat GEOG on two brobdingnagian plays (TD at end of half, then the TD kickoff return).  Very tough fought Defensive game.
Domers open just a 1.5 pick over PNST.

Defense is winning these games.

At least the ******* from Athens are bounced. I'm good with whomever wins it now. Buckeyes look like the best team playing, but I think the Domers take it this year. James Franklin is physically incapable of winning it all and Sark is living on borrowed time. ASU should have won that game.

Thanks, ADC.

I had a close call with ASU nearly taking down TX.  However, I’m still alive for a perfect score.  I have TX and ND in the semi’s.  I feel good about the Irish; however, at this point, I think Ohio State has to be the favorite to win the title.  I thought I would never say this but……  Go Horns!

YES on Buckeyes; they clobbered the Ducks.
Agree that Studio Heads would be thrilled with NDAM vs OHST, or Texas.  PNST is a regional squad.

Note:  for TV Ratings, MORE clicks will stream in to see Texas LOSE.
Just like Duke TV ratings in MBB; half the audience tunes in to watch the B.Devils lose with glee.

Hook 'em.

RE: College Football Playoff Predictions? - ADPinWDC - 01-10-2025

Decent Semi-final games until Texas imploded in Q4.

Steaming Buckeyes open a BIG 9.5 fave on Our Lady
https://www.espn.com/espn/betting/story/_/id/43365768/ohio-st-opens-95-point-favorite-notre-dame-cfp

OHST beat the #1 team getting here, after thumping TENN. They seem much better than the team that stumbled against MICH

NDAM upset GEOG after scrimmaging INDY, and then survived the PNST Defense.

I think the 12-team format basically worked.
I like that Conf Champs get an edge. Win your Conf.

The bubble burst for me tonight.  While I’ll be rooting for the Irish, I think OSU will win the championship.

I would like to see the four best teams regardless of conference get the byes and a reseeding after each round.  It would create more competitive games in the first round and reward the best teams for their regular season results.

RE: College Football Playoff Predictions? - Mick - 01-23-2025

USA Today has some fun clickbait. Today, they gave letter grades to all 134 college football teams, presumably a combination of excellence, achievement, satisfying experience, effort and unexpected success (or failure). Stanford was awarded a D+, which seems right to me.

Four A+'s given: Arizona State, Boise State, Indiana and SMU

ACC Grades
SMU, A+ as noted above.
Syracuse, A. Guess that Stanford loss didn't hurt them too much.
Duke, A-
Clemson, B+
Louisville, B+. Guess that Stanford loss didn't hurt them too much, part 2.
Miami, B+
Georgia Tech, B
Boston College, B-
Cal, B-
Virginia, C+
Wake Forest, C
North Carolina, C-
Pittsburgh, C-
Virginia Tech, C-
Stanford, D+
North Carolina State, D
Florida State, F -- one of only three F's, including Kent State and Oklahoma State

Former Pac-12 (current Pac-12 in bold) unless otherwise listed above:
Colorado, A
Oregon, A
Washington State, B-
UCLA, C+ (I don't understand this one)
Washington, C
USC, C-
Utah, C-
Oregon State, D+
Arizona, D-
