Not only is the shooting off, the defense hasn't really been able to get stops.  Heal hasn't taken a single shot.  They're shooting better from three than they are from two.  Rough game so far.

Well, throw out the second quarter and it is a pretty close game. :)
I think we have to face reality. We just are not a very good team this year.

Bob, I’ll just add that those of us who read this board also expected a pretty bad loss. And just as I started posting this, Stanford goes down by 25. Three minutes left in the third.

Duke is a very good team.  As we end the third quarter we are down by 19 - considering we lost to Kal by 20 earlier in the season - I'm pleased. I think we are showing improvement on the run.

So Umeh and Ogden can help us going forward and probably could have helped us much more throughout this season. They need to play more. In fact, the whole starting lineup should be reevaluated. Who's actually consistently deserving of court time.

The deficit has been whittled down to less than 20! We won the third quarter 17-14! Gotta cherish the small wins.

There are some positives.  A few. 

1) Umeh got into the game and seems to be playing fairly well.  Her development for the future is important.

2) Ogden so far is 3/4.

3) The coaches DID get us ready to drive to the basket rather than try to pass around the three point line.  We have tried repeatedly but only occasionally has it worked.  It just is not so much in the skill set of the players we have now.

The way the game is called also worked against us.  As usual, a closely called game would have worked against the better defensive team, while a loosely called game helps the defense.  Duke has an elite defense, and the refs called this one very, very loosely.  Under those conditions, we really did not have a chance.

For example, today, Agara does not seem to be able to score through contact around the basket.  And the refs are calling almost nothing inside, so she was fighting through arms and bodies and getting nothing.  Ijiwoye got lots of contact the several times she drove under the basket, but only once got the call. 

Still a quarter to go.  Hopefully we see signs of improvement.

Well, Umeh and Ogden were our two most highly rated recruits in their respective classes.
So they should be able to help us.
I believe Umeh is getting over an injury. Why Ogden hasn't been more effective is a mystery.
We were at 49 with over two minutes left so I thought for sure we would break 50.
Nada from then on though.

Stevenson just got shoved in the back under the basket with the ball. No call. I agree that the game is loosely officiated but only at one end of the floor.
Nice call on the spread guys. Nailed it. Sadly.

Brooke and Elena inconsistent.   Maybe time to play the underclassman more to give them experience and to figure out who you have for next year.   Ogden needs experience to get more comfortable, and to be able to play through mistakes.   Uhmeh is going to make mistakes, but her size can make a difference, and she has shown some good skills.  Would like to see her more.

I don't buy into the recruiting rankings once you get past the top handful.  There's no evidence to support that Umeh, who was ranked in the 40's, will turn out any better than Ijiwoye who was ranked in the 50's. Which is where Hannah Jump was ranked. Courtney Ogden was ranked #10 while Milaysia Fulwiley was ranked #13. Just completely off and very unreliable.  I don't think the scouts really watch the girls play. They base their rankings off of things like high school awards and averages, press, past rankings from when they were freshmen, etc. For example, if they actually watched Demetre play in high school, they would see that her lack of athleticism would really hurt her at the D1 level. She looks all world against smaller, average athlets in high school. But now we see how slow and limited she is. The #11 recruit in the country? Please. And Nunu, with a WNBA body and hops, checks in at #37.

Heal had done some some nice stuff in recent games, but she looked totally outmatched physically today. 3 turnovers in 9 minutes puts you firmly on the bench. Bosgana’s limitations showed today as well. She is a smooth but not explosive athlete, and she just isn’t effective against a team like Duke.
