I wonder what the odds are that they trade Brock Purdy before draft day?

My guess is slim and none.  I have traded him in a heartbeat if I could’ve signed Darnold  for three years $105 million and got a first round pick for Purdy.  But that would be almost impossible to do. Once you signed Darnold, the league knows you have to trade Purdy, reducing his value significantly. And you really can only trade Purdy if you have someone to slot in the position.

Time to do John Lynch’s job….

Would you trade Purdy to TN for the #1 overall pick?
Would you trade Aiyuk to Chicago for the #10 overall pick?

How about doing both?

I would make both deals and select Hunter and a QB with the 1 and 10 respectively.  Add in the best lineman available at #11 and it would be a pretty good haul.  Also, this would create cap space to sign additional help on both sides of the ball.

Probably the first, definitely the second.

Ayuck for  no 10 is a no-brainer.  And if I were Chicago’s owner, if they did that deal, I’d fire the GM on the spot. No way that gets done.

Purdy  for number 1 is tougher.  Personally, I highly doubt Tennessee would do it. But if they would – I’d pull the trigger on that; and then I’d go sign Sam Darnold  immediately.

The day before Deebo was traded for a 5th round pick, ESPN guesstimated that he would bring a 4th and a 5th round pick. I could see a healthy Aiyuk for the #10 overall pick, sure. After ACL? Maybe...maybe...a third round pick.

I would do the Purdy trade. I think Purdy's a terrific quarterback when he's surrounded by a healthy Kittle, McCaffrey, Aiyuk, Deebo, Jauan, etc. with a healthy Trent Williams. Maybe Tennessee would prefer a proven Brock Purdy over Cam Ward. Pros and cons to each.

If I were the Niners seeking a backup QB, I'd look closely at Mac Jones, two years, $5 million. Worth it, I think.

Called it...$5 mms. guaranteed, $7 mms.

The 49ers agree to a 2-year contract with QB Mac Jones, AP source says

Jones instead of Purdy?  No, no, no, no, no, no, no.  And 1,000 more no’s.

Jones is mediocre at best - just another guy.  He is the modern day equivalent of Steve DeBerg - just good enough to lose.

Purdy, while not a Tier One guy, is a solid Tier 2 QB.  I would not trade him for anything less than a top of the First Round selection.

Agreed with Giants. So...what do you think (a) Purdy is worth and (b) Purdy will actually sign for and © what are the odds that the Niners franchise tag Purdy?

I don’t think Purdy would get you a top of the first round pick. But I also dont think they are trading him. Jones will be a solid backup.

RE: 2025 49ers - Giants - 03-13-2025

I think SF will sign Purdy to an extension for something in the $40-$50 million AAV range.  I think that is a fair price given the pay range for QB’s.  There is no need to consider a franchise tag since he is already under contract for the 2025 season.

Thanks. I meant franchise tagging him for 2026 at $41 mms. +/- if they couldn't come to an agreement.

Also, what do you think are their greatest draft needs? I'm guessing DL, OL, LB, DB, WR, RB, more or less in that order, subject to change if they move Aiyuk. I suspect they will need a punter as well, there are five good ones in the draft.

Disagree on Jones. Think he'll do very well in Shanahan's system. Played great at Bama, hasn't had a lot of talent around him in the pros. He'll not replace Purdy, though.

Agreed. He's a decent backup at a good price. Since he's young, he also has upside in that if Purdy is injured and he plays well, we could trade him for value or get a comp pick back when someone else signs him like we did with Sam Darnold.

I read that Mac Jones was a hit at Tight End University. Apparently he's extremely accurate. I know he doesn't have a strong arm, he's not a good runner, and he doesn't make decisions as quickly as Purdy, but he's at least accurate.

Five years, $265 million, AAV of $53 mms. I liked your prediction better, Giants. But it is what it is.

Jauan Jennings wants a new contract. Kinda don't blame him.

Drake Jackson, former second round pick with some ability (three sacks in the first game last year), did not get a sniff from any NFL team. I wonder what really happened there?

Jobless former 49ers top draft pick may be forced into early retirement

6 Biggest Losers Left Scrambling After NFL Free Agency Day 2

SF was one of the Six Biggest Losers. 12 free agents, out the door.

To the contrary, they are a winner.

1. They weren’t going to win the Super Bowl with the group they had
2. Dumping guys that weren’t going to help them achieve that goal puts them on track to immediately develop a team that can win a championship.
3. The decks are now clear to, once again, start the quest for #6.

The way the NFL is structured, teams have a window to win it all.  Once the window starts closing, the best teams quickly pivot to creating a new window.  The crappy ones keep trying to prop the window open.

As Bill Walsh once said (paraphrasing), “It is better to let a guy go one year too early than one year too late”.

Agreed. The Niners were getting too old, too expensive to spend big on free agents. Teams like the Ravens and Chiefs have shown that to sustain success, you need to be ruthless about casting off older, non-elite talent, and keep infusing with youth and cost control through the draft.

As a general rule, early free agency contracts are overpays. Yes the cap is going up, but guys like Banks and Moore are below average players, being paid like above average talent.  Huff was always overrated due to the splash play factor, but was weak in coverage, and Greenlaw is very good, but may or may not get back to that level. For a linebacker losing a step can take one from elite to mediocre. That's not how you build for long term success.

You draft your core, you supplement with undervalued parts at the free-agency aisle (see ward's first contract), and pounce when you get the opportunity to add elite talent at the right price like we did with CMC and Trent. To that end, I like the Demarcus Robinson signing as a solid WR2-WR3 for WR4 money.

I am cautiously optimistic that coaching and special teams improvements, combined with some reversion to the mean on injury and red zone luck, will lead to a successful season.

"Ruthless" has to be one of the most important attributes for any professional team manager.

Ronnie Lott's a pretty good example. Let go when he was 31, All-pro and led the NFL in INTs at 32, then hung on for three years and 47 more games accomplishing comparatively little.

After his play v. the Chargers, I think Robinson makes the team.  Others…

Move WR Watkins to IR.
Add Hennessey to OL (Puni’s injury status requires one more OLer)
CB/S:  Add Flowers, delete Grant.
Valdez over Beal.  The coaches love “the Hulk”.

Of course, I expect the Niners will pick up at least one guy who has been cut by his present team thus jumbling the roster.  We will know tomorrow.

Don't know how or why this keeps happening to the 49ers. Cowing will miss a few weeks, Robinson suspended for first three weeks.

TE: Kittle, Farrell, Dwelley  Tonges, Willis   (3 - outside chance for Tonges and WillisI think both Tonges  and Willis make it given the number of double-tight end sets the 49ers will be forced to run, coupled with RB injuries.

OL: Williams, Puni, McKivitz, Brendel, Bartch, Burford, Zakelj, Pleasants, Colby Hennessy (9) Check. Might have left Zakely off, but I think they need the depth if Puni has to miss 1-2 weeks.

DL: Bosa, Williams, Huff, Okuayinonu, Gross-Matos, Collins, West, Anderson, Givens, Valdez, Elliott, Davis Beal (9, Givens on IR, Gross-Matos on PUP and maybe Elliott). Beal on, Davis off, Givens to IR, back to nine.

LB: Warner, Winters, Martin, Gifford, Bethune, Robinson Surratt (5 and hopefully Stanford alum Curtis Robinson who is on PUP list from ACL. I think this will happen)

CB: Lenoir, Green, Stout, Brown, Flowers, Lucas, Neal (5, maybe Luter or Neal. Robinson had a broken forearm in the last game)

S: Brown, Pinnock, Sigle, Neal Grant  Grant (4, Mustapha on PUP list. Mahoney looking good)

ST: LS Weeks, P Morstead, K Moody (3 - Greg Joseph in deadlock with Moody)

I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of Moody. Great week 2, horrendous week three with a missed XP and kicked the ball out of bounds on a kickoff.
