Man, there should be a rule against using the portal before you have even played one season at a school.  It just fcuks up the coach's ability to form a team.

Before I picked up a roster to know who belonged to what numbers during the scrimmage time, I saw a QB fumble a shotgun snap, chase after it and pick it up, and then, just before a defensive player got to him, he threw it forward two handed in a sort of wounded duck fashion. It was not intercepted… but it caused an immediate series of painful flashbacks to a number of INTs witnessed during the past season. I then saw the jersey number was 47… which a later look at the roster card indicated was Bachmeier. I didn’t pay any attention to him otherwise, so the rest of his performance may have been sterling. But, well, just sayin’…

Hope the laundry does better this year than last, because that's all we have left.  Speaking of laundry, 47 is a weird number for someone who is supposed to be a quarterback.

Bear says wearing a non-quarterback number is purposeful because he wants to be thought of as a tough hardnosed athlete as opposed to a fragile quarterback.
He is apparently still going to practices where he shares first team duty with Brown. So perhaps he is still debating whether to enter the transfer pool or not.
FWIW he has good things to say about both Taylor and Reich.

The fact that he is still practicing with the team raises questions.  Could his entering the transfer portal just be his attempt to leverage the coach into naming him the starter?  Or, could it be to get more NIL money from Lifetime Cardinal?  If so, just go away Bear.

Well, I did say on production/results alone. ;)  

I went to the event with my brother (as we both have since 1970) and he as arguing Jackson looked the most promising, all things considered.  Bachmeier's throwing motion looked a bit sidearm, so a bit less prototypical than the others.  Honestly, based on what I saw last weekend, I could see Brown, Backmeier, and Jackson ranked in any order and none would be all that surprising.

At many, dare I say most, college programs, once you put your name in the portal, you're off the team effectively immediately. This isn't the cub scouts, you're either in or you're out.

We have all heard the saying "If you can't decide between two QB's you don't have two first stringers you have two second stringers."
So if you can't decide between three, where does that leave you?
Of course, this was only one practice.

I read that 41% of football players entering the portal remain with their original team and another 5% withdrew their names. So there's that. Basically, it seems like a lot of them are fishing. They just have to do it publicly.

Agree. In industry people often look at other opportunities while keeping their current position. Normally they keep it as quiet as possible. If the current employer finds out about it their response varies depending on the perceived value of the "player". If the player is very valuable, the current employer often offers raises and "matching offers" to dissuade the player from leaving. If not, they do nothing. Football players do the same, but as you point out, they can't do it "privately".
 
IMO it is also important to consider the player may have their name in the portal for reasons that are not primarily football related. They may just not like Stanford socially, have academic problems, have family "issues" of some kind, don't get along with their position coach, etc. Bachmeier has spent a winter quarter at Stanford. He did that without the initial "freshman introduction" the other freshmen received. Fall quarter is in my experience a much easier quarter. Winter quarter is the most difficult of the four, and its not close. That can be a jarring initial experience for anybody :-).

Stanford has been in the vanguard of the new trend. AI says that approximately 19 Power 4 schools have dropped the spring game. Some of us older alumni have not been keeping up with the times.
