2019-2020 season:  Just looking at fouls in a selection of games.  The stats are kinda strange. You have to look twice to figure out who committed the foul on whom.  Multiple player substitutions are impossible to figure out.

Tenn 78-51:  Q1 7:29 foul.  6:02 sub out;  Q4: 3:04 foul.  3:04 sub out (garbage time)
Ms St 67-62:  no fouls in 36 minutes
The other OSU  71-52 :  Q4 5:57 foul.  0:40 sub out (garbage time)
Tex 64-69: Jones had no fouls in (only) 17 minutes.
WSU 77-58 1/3/2020:  Q1 2:54 foul. 0:53 sub out;
Cal 73-40 1/10/2020:  Q3 9:30 foul. 5:38 foul
  I do not see her getting subbed out in Q3. She does not appear in the stats in Q4. (24:47 playing time).
Cal 79-65: Q3 9:19 foul. 3:06 foul  (Jones played 35:42)
Ore 55-87: Q3 5:23 foul.  2:30 sub out
OSU 61-58 (1/18/2020) : No fouls in 23 minutes.  She suffered a season-ending injury.

A small selection (9) of fouls, but in general it does appear Jones was somehow exempt from the rule that a foul triggers a substitution.

I still stand by what I said about decades of watching Tara's teams with many star players.

I was referring to non-fouls (bad passes, not blocking out for rebounds, not hustling to get rebounds, poor shot selection, getting pick-pocketed, moving screens, not looking for teammates.  Haley was the golden girl as a freshman, but she was not immune to mistakes; not so for some other frosh.

One thing that gets me is when fans complain about a coach having a short leash on a player, after one or two mistakes in a game. How about seeing it from the coach's perspective? What if that one player - who isn't an All-American, who isn't a sure-fire starter, but someone who could contribute off the bench - makes a mistake, but is something she keeps doing over and over again in practice? To us, it seems like one or two mistakes, but to the coach, it's a pattern that they can't just fix themselves? We always want to blame the coach, but what if the player needs to hold accountability as well? We aren't at practices - we don't know if they are playing well or not.

Just something to think about.

Fair point; Jones had 49 turnovers in 18 games, so she had 2.7 of those mistakes per game.  She did shoot .528, so it's hard to argue that her shot selection as a whole was bad (she had a bad three point percentage but only attempted 11 threes).  She had 4.2 rebounds per game (averaging 25 minutes per game) which probably speaks to above average boxing out.  She also had 43 assists in 18 games, which again, for a non-point guard argues she was a pretty good team player.

Perhaps somewhat analogously, I don't remember Lexie Hull getting a short hook either her freshman year (I may be misremembering it) and though she had fewer turnovers than Jones did, she also scored fewer points, had a worse field goal percentage, fewer rebounds per game and fewer assists.  Cameron Brink did get yanked a fair bit (not just her freshman year, but her first three years) but I seem to recall it was mostly for foul trouble.

Absent someone who could go play-by-play and look at the probability of a player being subbed out after each negative play, it is hard to know definitevely beyond a gut sense that some players have a short leash (probably true).  I tend to think we notice it when we have a highly ranked recruit who we think ought to play more (eg Betts), as opposed to your average freshman.  Coaches are human, so I don't doubt there is some discrepancy but the real question is whether there is a reasonable justification.  I think in general for Jones, she probably justified a reasonably long leash. I mean, as a freshman, she was third on the team in ppg, third in fg percentage (second if you focus only on those with at least 100 attempts), was second on the team in assists per game, and only had 19 personal fouls in 18 games.  She was the team leader in points 5 times and in rebounds three times despite only playing 18 games.  So, I'm inclined to believe she deserved the long leash.  The question then is whether someone like Betts deserved to have a longer leash, and you could certainly make that argument.  The counterargument is that the starters in 2022/23 in the post were Cameron Brink and Kiki Iriafen, and who you can put in if a player gets pulled also has to be considered.

I wouldn't count out Ezike (see scouting report from Brandon Clay below).  She doesn't seem as polished offensively, however if she is a versatile defender (strong/long enough to defend posts and quick enough to stay in front of guards if there is a switch) and a good defensive/offensive rebounder, then I could see Ezike getting playing time if surrounded by more offensive playmakers.

From scout Brandon Clay:

"Ezike has impressive size and athleticism in the frontcourt. She runs the floor as well as any post player in her class. There is untapped potential in Ezike's game as she approaches her senior year of high school. Her willingness to rebound and defend her position bodes well for her long-term prospects. Ezike also has room to develop as an offensive weapon, particularly in finishing through contact and shooting short jump shots."

Not sure.  She reminds me VERY much of Bonnie Samuelson.  Same height, same build, same three point shooting.  It took Bonnie a couple of years of development to be more than a shooter, and she eventually became a credible stretch 4.

Question, perhaps for Bob.  Now that we know that Heal is leaving, does that mean that someone like Harriel could stay?  Or are we opening up a roster spot for another transfer?

It would need to be someone "like" Harriel since the actual Jzanyia has signed with SMU.

I’m assuming Lauren Green will keep the last scholarship and remain with the team. I think I still see her in the videos posted on X.

I had assumed that Green would return to walk-on, but apparently not.  I wonder if Harriel would have transferred to SMU if she had known that Heal was leaving?  I wonder when the coaches learned that Heal would be leaving?

I was not aware of her academic status.  She has another year of eligibility, and presumably an MA can be stretched out a bit.  Was she co-term?

i posted a while back that uconn would be without azzi fudd next year because she is finishing her masters this year. others corrected me that fudd will be taking a 6th year at uconn ie a 2nd post-ba year. harriel presumably similar although perhaps a 2nd, different masters as she'll be at a different school.

From the Stanford Sports Report April 16:  Harriel decided early on to transfer for graduate play and this was known as she was honored on Senior Day. The article reports that it was mutually agreed that she would be better off playing her final year of eligibility elsewhere.  She was a Poly Sci major and there's no mention of her being co-term.
