Can you document this? A quick search didn’t show any mention of this. I don’t know that such layoffs would need to be in such a filing, but I would think so
WARN filing is required if 50 or more employees are involved - I could see the layoffs occuring without being "documented" if the #s were below 50, plus the timelines are different
But why wouldn't Stanford bundle Athletic Department layoffs into this WARN filing? It certainly is a bad look that they laid off so many in so many areas but essentially didn't touch Athletics. I imagine the Faculty Senate would question the administration over this.
If we had any documentation of the numbers, if any, laid off in Athletics, then that would be one thing, but right now, I've not seen any.
Well, we really have no way of knowing where <any> of the layoffs took place, do we?

Are you thinking this set of layoffs could be in the Athletic Department??

I would guess if the AD layoffs were about the same time then they would be included in the WARN filing. In filings for companies I have worked for the titles in the WARN filing are not necessarily the same as the one someone might have on their business card, the WARN filing titles were the official job classifications from the internal jobs ladders (e.g., my last job title was "Senior Product Strategy Manager", but in a WARN filing it would show up as "Product Manager 5", many engineers had various titles related to their job (e.g., OS kernal engineer) but in WARN filings they were under things like MTS3 (member of technical staff 3)). I would guess that many of the roles in the AD have the same job classifications as other roles in the University

In California WARN applies when an employer of more than 75 people lays off at least 50 people within a 30 day period. People working in the AD work for Stanford University so if AD people were laid off within the same 30-day period, they would be covered by the same WARN.
My firm is just pushing 50, so this doesn't apply. I only know that every termination for cause and layoff I've ever done, regardless of how lousy the employees' performances were, had a sleepless night before. Well, except JW, who did nothing but watch movies on his phone or laptop all day long in plain sight. That was GTFO and we'll deny your unemployment claim. Which we did, and the State paid anyway. Why do they even send those letters if they just pay them anyway? "No reason for termination provided." Uh, BS, that was a painful and painfully obvious conversation.
Letting 2% of a large workforce go is noise, unless you are part of that two percent. Hope everyone lands on their feet.

While I feel for anyone who has lost their job, universities, Stanford included, have become bloated administrative messes.
Over 40 years in the US, student enrollment went up by 78%. Faculty increased by 92%. Admin/non faculty employees went up 452%.
There are a variety of factors contributing to this, many out of the university's control, but a disturbing trend nonetheless.
A similar issue plagues my field (medicine) where for every doc or front line nurse there seem to be 4 people whose only job is to make sure metrics are met and hoops are jumped through.

These cuts provide some cushion for the reduced funding at the medical school, but we haven’t seen what its cuts look like since they are operating on a different timeline.

I'm not sure where Stanford Medical is on all this, but
a bunch of NIH grants were reinstated a month ago. I don't know for sure, but my guess is the court order does not help for the turnover of NIH grants. So, this may just be a stay of execution.

You nailed it, 82lsju - other than those for the three specific positions noted earlier, the same generic job classification titles are used for like positions across the university, regardless of school/department.

Here's the body of the email that went out to AD staff. Knowing the people that were laid off, the job titles that you all referenced do not apply to those individuals.
As President Levin and Provost Martinez communicated a few weeks ago, changes in the higher education landscape have significantly impacted universities nationwide. In sight of these changes and ongoing uncertainty about how federal support for universities will evolve, Stanford is significantly reducing the amount of general funds it provides to support operations in the upcoming fiscal year. Consequently, many campus departments - including DAPER - are implementing budget cutbacks; and we are facing the difficult reality that those budget cutbacks require a reduction in staff positions.
There is no easy way to work through the painful process of professionally parting ways. In an effort to limit the duration of that process, we will be communicating with all of the individuals who are impacted by these reductions within the next 48 hours. We will follow up when all the notifications have been completed.

a concrete example, an Associate Vice Provost was laid off (she posted about being laid off on LinkedIn) and there is no "Vice Provost" job title in the WARN filing so the official job classification is something else.

On the food side, 3 chefs and 3 dieticians are being laid off.
the AD directory still lists two dieticians

The proposed budget before Congress for the fiscal year beginning in October includes a 40% cut in NIH funding.

Budget and staffing update
Dear faculty and staff,
As we wrote last month, the university is making a $140 million reduction in the general funds budget for the upcoming year. This is the product of a challenging fiscal environment shaped in large part by federal policy changes affecting higher education.
Over the last few days, many schools and units at Stanford have made staff reductions. The university is providing support resources as well as layoff benefits to eligible employees. Nonetheless, these are difficult actions that affect valued colleagues and friends who have made important contributions to Stanford.
We also know that many of you will need to make adjustments going forward as a result of budget cuts. Thank you for your hard work, for your support of your colleagues, and for all of your efforts to support our vital ongoing mission of research and education.
Sincerely,
Jon Levin, President
Jenny Martinez, Provost
and here's part of the layoff policy
